Planning to do a Ryzen build down the line for video editing, rendering and such.

Was wondering what are some good compatible air coolers that will handle an Ryzen overclocked to 4ghz.

Also can the cheaper 1700 hit 4ghz easily or is that only achievable for the more expensive 1700X & 1800X?

I've read quite a few reviews for R7 1700s hitting 3.8 - 3.9 with a handful able to hit 4.0. I think it is the best bang for the buck of the lineup right now. I'm resisting the urge to pick one up myself until the bugs of the new platform get worked out.

The Noctua NH-D15 is still arguably the best air cooler on the market. The biggest problem with it is that mid-range AIOs (water coolers like the Corsair H80i) are the same price.

Silicon lottery rules apply to all three chips and even going with 1800x doesn't guarantee it. Get the 1700 and save the cash.

As for coolers Ryzen doesn't seem limited by thermals so any of the normal high end ones will work fine. Just make sure it is one of the newer revisions with the AM4 brackets.

As an example look at these two

Both are D15's but the first link is the new one that comes with the AM4 brackets needed for Ryzen while the second is an older one with out them.

Some of the companies like Noctua, corsair , Phanteks, NZXT, ect are offering free Ryzen upgrade kits to make older coolers compatible. If you already own one I suggest you get a free kit and continue to use your old one but if you're buying a new one make sure its a new revision with AM4 kits already included.

Just do the same it is for intel since most, if not all, are currently working on AM4 adapters or give you one for free. Only thing you need is proof of purchase (at least it was for bequiet) they have a form and most ship for free.

As a result the noctua dh15 will probably be on of the best

Why is that a problem? That tips the scales towards the Noctua IMO. The DH-15 is around $80 USD. The H80iGT costs $10 more and performs the same. The H80 is also 13 db louder. That's a lot!

Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT currently holds the crown. Best performance with the best stock fan available to mankind. It's not as overpriced as Noctua as well.

Yep Noctua shipped pretty fast had mine within a week, all I had to do was screenshot a picture of motherboard and cooler from the invoice and the same day they responded that they sent the kit out.
Motherboard that I ordered is taking longer , as it seems now last weeks of March will see some better availability.

Perhaps problem is too strong a word in this case. I have read several reviews for the D14 and D15 that have made the statement that it is the same price as AIO coolers where the reviewers considered this a negative.

those AIO just cool the cpu , a decent air cooler also blows air over Ram modules , VRM's etc . thats why i like the NH-C14 over water cooling , might be a hassle with some clearances , but hey do your homework before you buy stuff :p

Not finding the le grand really available, and the regular big macho + separate single fan is barely/not cheaper than D15 (with two fans unless you need the S offset for 2011) checking the usual places in NA. (newegg, amazon, google price search usually turns up the rest)

Also don't see anything about an AM4 updated version, the most important criteria in this case: Disqualified.

D15 am4 version, buy once cry once. Or regular D15 and am4 kit (free if not in a hurry, $8 otherwise) so you can put it on any socket. Having bought into the noctua mount "ecosystem" I've found most of the other mounting contraptions piss me off mighty.

I am currently using a Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT (the one with the included fan) to cool down my Ryzen 7-1700 oc'd to 3.8ghz. It keeps the processor exceptionally cool (71c during Prime95 SmallFFT) while making almost no noise at all. It's the quietest HSF I've ever used. Easily available in the US through Amazon. The AM4 bracket was included. I highly recommend this cooler for anyone wanting to go with a big air system instead of an AIO sealed loop.
