Have an MSI Z87-GD65 mobo that boots up fine to Windows 7

Keyboard, internet, mouse, and all USB ports are not working

Tried to reinstal drivers, still now working. All '!' in device manager.

Reset CMOS, still nothing. BIOS mouse/keyboard works.

Currently running chkdsk.

No system restore points.

Dead mobo? Thanks

sfc /scannow

Maybe flaky power supply or motherboard.

Boot up with a live Linux CD and see if they still have issues.

I would think you have something off in bios. I understand you cleared cmos. Go through each and every setting and make sure you don't need to enable anything. Also verify windows pnp is on.

Check to make sure no urq or memory address conflict.

What kind of sound? Codex? Pie card?

What else is on usb?

My son has his JMRI plugged in to run his train layout from the computer. I'm guessing he might have inadvertently shorted something out.

Most likely USB device drivers are hosed somehow. Test with a Linux LiveCD just to be sure. Probably just need to reinstall/force reinstall the chipset/USB driver set for your board.

just tried windows repair and it keeps telling us there's something plugged into the USB (ie camera, etc.) when there isn't anything.

We tried installing the drivers with the mobo disk and nothing. it won't update them.

NEVER use the disk that came with the board.

Go to the website and download the latest ones.

I concur. Also, try a Linux Live CD on a flashdrive or something fer Chrissakes. It'll take 15 min tops and you'll know for sure if the issue is strictly OS related (it probably is).

How can i do a flashdrive if all the USB ports are dead?

Going to burn the updated drivers to a cd or dvd and see if I can get somewhere with that.

I can't install any of the latest drivers. I get an error when I try to install the chipset drivers in safemode and it hangs when I try it in Windows 7.

This is the last attempt. Where do I get a legit copy of Linux Live? Google's being a bit of a dick today.

FDISK

Wipe it and start over. Back up your important files first.... i.e. image drive before you wipe it.

I'm assuming this is a new machine and these are USB3 ports?

W7 doesn't like USB3. You may have to slipstream the drivers into the install media.

If it works in BIOS but not in the OS, its either a BIOS configuration issue or a driver problem. Was it working before and stopped working or is this a new install?

Fubar driver is my guess.

Clean win install may be needed.

Update: After moving files to the 2 Terabyte drive we just did a clean install. Everything is up and running as it should be! With the latest drivers and all.

Thank you for your time guys. And thanks for the Ubuntu OS trick!

I am glad your computer is up and working again.

If you have time and resources you might want to take the plunge and either move to Linux or a new version of Windows.

I used 7 for about 2 years and had funky USB issues the whole time. Some minor like needed to change the keyboard back and forth between two ports just about every time I booted, some more like what you just dealt with.

Yeah the USB 3.0 doesn't like my gaming headset. But it's amazing how so many drivers crapped out all at once. Just glad I didn't have to spend money on another mobo.

As for Linux, can you game with it?

Yes, you may have to work for it though and in some cases work hard to get almost as much performance.

Steam does have some games on it's Linux client.

Might want to see if GOG or any other digital distributor has a linux presence as well.

If not you will learn to Wine.

*Hint* Google Linux and Wine

Something I have played with a tiny bit time to time.
