Upgrading to Ryzen Question

There's a ton of arguing and misinformation going around. I figure I'll start some more of that here (not intentionally) with this question.

I have a system running an i3-6100 right now. I'm using it for games like FFXIV, CS:GO, War Thunder, CIV VI and similar titles. I also do a little 1080p and 4k video editing and some media processing. I have been using the same computer to stream (sometimes) but have been limited to shadowplay since the CPU can't handle the load.

What do you think about upgrading to the Ryzen 1700? Seems like I might actually get worse per-core performance, but could I still see a decent notch up in performance in those types of games? Also, my video editing software (Davinci Resolve, Video Studio X9, Blender, Handbrake) sometimes is GPU accelerated so would more cores really make much difference there?

You would have to build a new PC on socket AM4 with DDR4. Other than that, I think it would be a pretty hefty upgrade if you use this for content creation, streaming and light gaming from an i3-6100. What video card are you using with it?

Think so? The 7700k upgrade and 1700 upgrade are going to cost me roughly the same. I only have a 1080p 60 monitor btw.

How is it going to cost the same to you? Are you able to sell your mobo/i3 + put in cash for the r7?

If I was in your shoes, I'd surely get the r7 1700 if I could afford it. You are right in saying that a lot of video encoding is GPU accelerated so your CPU doesn't make as much of a difference as most people like to think.
But, when you're streaming that's a whole different story. The Ryzen should smoke the i7 in streaming and every other game you ever will play should run at 60 fps anyway.

Yeah, I was aiming to hit microcenter and get a the R7 1700 + a 110 board. Get the combo discount, then sell the i3/board combo. The i3 board is just a b150 and doesn't have very many features, so I would want a better one maybe if I bought an i7

I think I'll just get the r7 1700 today. I have to go to microcenter anyway and I'm sick of paying intel money.

Can't talk much about your other games but I've been solely building my rig with two things in mind, encoding/streaming and FFXIV. I'm going from x79 at the low OC I expect small gains in raw fps but frametimes should improve greatly from what we're seeing in Sandy v Ryzen benches. The encoding though could really hamper my gaming before and this should completely alleviate that.

With your needs and your i3 being capped at 3.7 the the benchmarks of the main sky/Kaby chips at 4.5 is not indicative of your performance. As long as you OC your new 1700 to 3.7/6 it should be pretty much equal in poorly threaded scenarios and stomp it in situations it isn't.

I'm kinda hoping you got it on last week so you can let us know how it runs XIV very little info on it on this game and Im gobbling up as much info on the subject lol. I would gladly run stuff but I'm sitting here boardless with very nice paperweights doing nothing until any of my mobo choices come in Stock. ; ;
