Hopped back on my breach guy to warm myself back up for 2.6, got a few easy challenges done, 6-linked a 700es chest I was working on before I quit, then Vaal'd it into junk. And my cable modem is dying (part of why I was playing again too...to make sure all is well, noticed lagginess in some games recently). Sooo good thing I checked it out, had this happened on friday before the league started I'd be freaking the fuck out. I've got the whole weekend slated for a headstart. Gonna do SSF to start then drop it once things get tough. ;)

Started on this game a couple of days back just a breath of fresh air from D3, having pretty decent fun so far, though I am pretty sure my build is totally out of whack (level 24, but focused primarily on zombie number, working on getting that 5th zombie number passive now).

I am thinking of getting the supporter packs, but I will hold out a little until I actually need the stash space. And I probably will sit out on the next league to get a grasp of the game.

The only gripe I might have with this game (which is shared by Grim Dawn), is that making a new toon seem a completely PITA.

A couple of questions though...

1. When league unlocks microtransactions for completing a number of challenges, does it reward you the actual micro, or do you also have to pay for it?

2. Are ascendency class choice permanent? As in if I change it, I have to play new toon?

Chen,
I would suggest working on leveling your current character (casually) while learning the core mechanics of the game. Gem Links, Skill Interactions, Currency, etc. Then when the new league hits, roll a new character in the league with your lessons learned. There will be a ton of people playing, there will be a ton of newbies like yourself, and you will get an opportunity (assuming you stick with it) to experience every previous league the game has offered.

To answer your questions:
1. You get the mtx in your mtx inventory, free. Some of the ones you get from challenges are great, some are meh.
2. You can spend regret orbs to get skill points back, and for ascendency choice:
http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Ascendancy_class#Refunding
>Refunding one Ascendancy skill point requires five regular refund points. When all points are refunded, you can use the Altar of Ascendancy at the end of the Labyrinth to change your Ascendancy class for free.

The wiki is extremely detailed and well maintained. If you ever have a question about an item/skill/effect/damage type/ whatever, just look it up in the search bar. Like other wikis, you'll end up learning a lot by following link to link, picking up on interactions, and get an idea of how to direct your character's build.

http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Raise_Zombie

Just a note in regards to summoners, they have a bunch of somewhat complex interactions they rely on to be "good". Typically "good" summoners in the current meta go to SRS (Summon Raging Skull), Golem, or Spectre (Raise Spectre, to which there are certain mob types that are best, usually Flame Sentinels) focus.

Lastly, people have lots of information on their builds on the forums:

http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-forum/22

And on reddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/

And there is even a neat tool out there to make builds into one giant single image, called "atlas of build":

https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1715993

Edit:
And profile/build pages that help you see information easier:

http://poe-profile.info
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1716360

And market manipulation/trending tools:

http://poe.ninja/

And lastly, and most importantly, the defacto trade website:

http://poe.trade/

Have fun being completely overwhelmed with information!

Actually, I found that if I broke stuff down into chunks, the game isn't too terribly complicated apart from builds mostly.

The skill tree looks very complicated in the beginning, but I realised that they simply pulled off what FFX did: put all classes's skills and passives onto the same page, and whether someone can use a certain passive or not is basically dictated by the class can reach it from its starting point or not.

I have SRS, but I don't think I have the gear to utilise it fully, I can only get about 10 out at a time due to crappy FCR. I have been relying mostly on zombies as tanks and Ice Spear as as my main attack, though I probably definitely screwed up my build there.

I am aware of the gem links, and how they work, problem is the gems themselves, figuring out what's useful and what are not, and getting the right sockets and links lol.

Another question;

Does regret points only refund 1 at a time, or a complete reset at a time? I have a funny feeling that it's one point at a time.

One at a time, but don't stress it, every league or major patch all characters get a complete full respec for free. Also, each character gets about 18 respec points from quest rewards, and once you get accustomed to the game regret orbs won't seem expensive anymore (and you'll be able to level from 1-70 in less than 15 hours, top racers do it in 7hrs)

Although you can play one character till the end of time in standard league, the game is designed around playing characters in leagues where everyone starts with a fresh brand new economy, in a new league every 3-4 months or so. Leagues usually introduce cool mechanics which are not available in standard league.

Thanks!

One more question though (hopefully the last, but doubtful XD), if I unlock the Scion class on standard, do I need to unlock it again on League? And does it unlock it on hardcore?

Once you unlock the scion on the account, any league, you get them unlocked everywhere, forever.

As far as SRS goes, they are very strong and using faster casting (and eventually spell echo) will allow you to pump them out at a decent rate, you can use increased duration to lengthen their time summoned. At your level having 10 is ok. You could also consider doing SRS + Spell Totem( + Faster Casting + Increased Duration), which would allow you to plop down the totem once, then go back to using your main spell. Also remember that you can have two active skill gems in the same link, and linked support gems will affect both. So Faster Casting + SRS + Ice Spear will give faster casting to both spells.

For gems + skills, refer to the wiki often, but you can generally see what gems work for skills by their modifiers. Can't remember if you have to Hold alt while hovering over the gem, but it should say different key modifiers:
SRS is Spell, Minion, Duration, Fire.

Lastly, if you didn't see/realize, you can buy an assortment of skill gems from the potion/scoll vendors' second tab after you complete certain quests in the act. For Act 1 its Nessa (after you complete medicine chest I think?). Each act has a different assortment of gems to buy. (And each class gets a different selection as well).

Thanks for that.

I know of the gem vendors. The problem I am currently facing is finding items with the right combination of sockets LOL.

I haven't found any decent blue socketed items with the right links. My SRS is currently linked with my Zombie gem with Minion damage, if I can find another 3 blue linked item, I will change it around with SRS getting both minion damage and FCR gem, and Zombie/Skeletons with minion damage.

Another question, there is a gem that gives you a curse allows anyone who attacks the cursed monsters a buff that increases their attack and casting speed. Does that curse also buff minions? The text isn't immediately clear even in the strictest interpretation of it.

Spell echo is not needed for SRS anymore. The max number of spirits you can cast is only 20 now (down from 50 prior to patch 2.5) so faster cast speed is all you'll need if you build your character properly.

True but while leveling you're not going to have the cast speed from gear/passives to hit it. Not that he can get it right now anyways at his level.

Yeah, only level 28 and act 3 right now, and I am nowhere NEAR the kind of speed that vets are pulling 1~70 in 15? I probably will take longer as I have a bad habit of revealing an entire map.

Also, any idea about the curse question?

Yes a cursed monster will give those benefits to anyone/any minion that kills/damages them. Eventually as a necro you will be a buffer/caretaker of your minions, putting down curses and using Bone/Spirit/Flesh Offering to buff/heal/direct them. I believe nowadays this is somewhat automated with something like Wither + Cast while Channeling + ???.

Seem to be sticking to my routine every time I start up this game again. I'll join a league near the start, play for a month and a half, then phase out. Been doing this off and on for like three years now. Last night I spent ~2h organizing my mess of a stash. In some instances, I had 10+ duplicate skill gems. I have like six characters level 50+ with all passive skills reset. Instead of joining the new league coming out in a week or so, I might just stick with standard. Doesn't seem as populated, but at least when I come back from a hiatus my gear won't be mediocre and on the cusp of a reset. Just can't decide on a roll. Last time around I was a summoner. It was fine, but perhaps I'll do a ranger of sorts.

Lol, people love reposting things from reddit. All those "hidden" mechanics he's talking about were clearly mentioned in the 2.2 patch notes. That's all the way back when ascendancies were first introduced back in March of last year.

https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1596094
Any skill with an associated Threshold Jewel is now supportable by Support Gems that could affect the additional properties added by the Threshold Jewel.

Granted understanding the full implications of that change does take a bit of research and knowledge/experience with the game's mechanics but the devs do talk about them openly.

The Legacy leagues are not the ones you want to skip: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1834597

100 buffed uniques, legacy versions of uniques (can be good or bad!), and the ability to mash together 3 different leagues at any time (Perandus + anything, Beyond + Rampage, etc.). I plan to give the SSF HC ladder a go.

Sumbitch. Welp. Looks like I'll have to try this then.

I've been leveling a Burning Arrow ranger in Standard the past week. Wonder what I should do for the new league...

I haven't really played a bow build yet. Anyone got some good league starter bow builds for someone with moderate experience?

I have no idea on a build. I posted on the general forums about a 2H melee. But all I read about is how terrible melee is. I have NO idea on what class/build.

I've played several variations on an elemental bow build using the "Storm Cloud" unique bow. It's dirt cheap and can be had from day one of the league for very little currency. It can then be upgraded to "The Tempest" via a prophecy and in that form it's good enough to take you into early end game. The only other uniques I'd recomend are the "Static electricity" jewels which will give you tons of extra lightning damage. An example tree looks thusly but this portion of the tree is changing with the new patch so pathing will have to change a bit.

I went with a SRS (Summon Raging Skull) Necromancer build as a starter build (the build I cannot remember who made it, but its the variant that uses Zombies in addition to Spectres as tanks), made it to Merciless (AKA Merc) with only self found gear and around 40 deaths. Just made it to act 3 Merciless, so it may not be an entirely accurate indication on how well the build does (perhaps entirely inaccurate!), but my clearing speed, once all the Auras and passives are in place, have been relatively constant.

I plan to play that same build in the new League, but I might not opt for SSF just yet, I need to learn about the best places to farm for things before I commit to SSF (EG Tabula's chest piece), perhaps the league after the next, in time for Patch 3.0.

Wow. I hope they add a prophecy to upgrade it and I'll wear that for speed mapping

Patch notes will be posted later tonight btw :)

2.6 patch notes up
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1839765/

Looks like my league starter build which also happens to be easily guardian and shaper viable escaped unscathed from all the aoe changes.

P.S: If people were planning bow builds Drillneck quiver and Reach of the Council bow got nerfed to the ground.

Can't see it from work, any nerfs or buffs related to Minions?

EDIT: Back home now, saw the changes.

A nerf to Orb of Storms, but I spam that anyway so not much changed.

Buff to Zombie attack radius, that's good.

Will be interesting to see how Area radius affect my auras.

Expect auras to be about 75% of what they were, there are a couple of comparison screenshots/videos floating around that use existing modifiers calculated to equal their new numbers. There are so many unique changes to look at more closely, its going to make leveling feel great thats for sure.

I'm going to be attempting to speed run up to cruel, imitating the various racer tactics. TLDR: Skip everything but Blues/Bosses, use logout to port to town faster, don't pick up anything you won't use immediately, and RUN RUN RUN.

Perhaps I'll do a fireball build.

Am I overlooking anything here?:
http://poeplanner.com/AAUAANsDAgBrk...AABUCHwEUAQF4AAMBLAEBQAYB6AMGHwAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The mana leech cluster you're taking only work with attack damage so your fireball spell will not work with those. Spec out of that and use the points to take a few mana / mana regen nodes. Even with those, though, you might need to run with a mana flask. I'd also recommend spending the two points to take elemental overload - it's a monstrous damage boost. With elemental overload I recomend using an orb of storms + crit stikes + curse on hit + curse of your choice set up. That procs elemental overload often enough to keep it up most of the time and applies your curse - it's super convenient.

I might recommend something like this. I also think taking Vaal Pact might not be worth the huge travel investment unless you have a very large source of life leech somewhere. Those 9 points are likely better spent simply taking more ES nodes.

Thanks for that. I was under the impression attack damage would be covered under the fire. Duly noted. Good point on VP too. There's no mana leech node that would work, huh?

To add, what about the Doryani Staff?
K3eQKrh.png

Would that physical damage add up enough to hold over on mana/life leech?

Skills are broken into two broad categories - spells and attacks - and you need to pay attention to various keywords on support gems and passive nodes to make sure that everything will work together. So, as you've seen, the Doryani's catalyst has no keywords attached to the life leech so it will leech life from any elemental damage, spell or attack. It's sneaky, though, as the local physical damage on it is only applied to attacks. This is never explicitly said on weapons but it's always the case. So, you won't be adding physical damage to your fireballs. And even if it did, it would still be spell damage. Thus there are no mana leech nodes on the tree that work with spell damage. You have two choices for that - either the mana leech gem or the Warlord's Mark curse. I've often run Warlord's Mark as a blasphemy aura for this very purpose.

Gotcha.

And I'm reading on their general forums that the tree is being revised? So I might just be wasting my time with this?

The big changes are going to happen in between the ranger and shadow so I think your tree will only have minimal changes to deal with.

Yup, OoS nerf is pretty negligible. Many builds use it as a defacto self cast aura to trigger Elemental Equilibrium/elemental weakness, etc. always repositioning it when moving from pack to pack so like you said no change there.

Zombies got some major love check out the changes to Montregul's grasp
Zombies Deal 80-100% More Physical Damage. Zombie Maximum Life mod increased to 5000.

Also check out the changes to the warband items (brinerot, mutewind, redblade) there's lots of golem buffs there should you go the golemancer way.

Personally, I'm going to give freezing pulse a try this league as, one, I've never used it before and, two, I'm super curious to try the threshold jewel that gives two extra freezing pulse projectiles. Two jewels and I have a "free" GMP. Is this enough to make freezing pulse good? That remains to be seen. And, because I'm a special snowflake, I'm going to do it as a Hierophant. I like the idea of the pseudo-5-links that Illuminated Devotion gives for a league starter build. And I like the large amounts of mana + reduced mana cost that Divine Guidance gives. Using that large mana pool and low-ish mana cost I'm going try and boost cast speed as high as I can because fast cast/attack speed builds just feel great to play. Then sanctuary of thought gives me 25% of max mana as extra energy shield so all of the mana I spec into provides me defense too. Then spec into Mind over Matter so that mana provides even more defense and maybe this will provide a pretty survive-able character. I don't quite know but I'm looking forward to trying something a little different. Tree currently looks like this. Planning to level as far as I can with a Bitterdream scepter - maybe with a faster casting corruption on it - and we'll see....

I did freezing pulse previously and had some issues with mana sustain, but didn't make an effort to resolve it with elreon rings, nor did I level them up completely and see its final strength. The added projectiles should allow you to do better damage. Everything i've seen implies its a doable build for end game, maybe harder on some bosses.

Personally I think I'll be trying a zombie summoner out, and just hoping that the Montegrul's buff is good enough. I'll be leveling srs of course. I'm also considering a 2nd stat-stack character using sprinkler and shaper gloves, as some reddit post was theorycrafting.

Funny story about prepping for this league. 2 weeks ago my modem died, had to replace it. Last night my power supply (not even 2yrs old) died. Fortunately I had an old one, but had to ignore the gf for an hour to swap it out.

Saw this for Freezing Pulse recently so figured I'd share. I despise anything totem related though (I die of boredom).

Does [H] have a PoE guild?

The Global chats and some parts of the PoE community in general are giving me seizures...
