HTC Vive Owners Thread

Dining room tables .. Who even uses them? Eat like savages on the couches/computer desks like the rest of us.

Had a "family night" at my daughter's gymnastics last Friday where I have my vive setup. Everyone loved it. Even some dads tried it and you should have seen the looks from the wives... Every dad was like, "I know what I am getting next Christmas."

I need more kid friendly games though. They all played Waltz of the Wizard for the most part and the dads zombie training sim.

Impressive!

Impressive! I am amazed the accuracy of the motions with so few sensors! IK (inverse kinematics) or joint positions was virtually right on, almost unbelievable the accuracy. Anyways for simulated fighting games this would be just profound. Mortal Combat anyone? Boxing? Mix Martial Arts? Also for multiplayer games this could be useful except some motions such as running/walking will need to be self animated but once positioned it could be all real time mo caped.

Online multiplayer Boxing/Fight Club in VR is definitely my top must have VR game!

Thinking about it you could also actually have a visible body as well in VR, with weapons and all :). Your punch, kick etc. would be right there. I guess some would want to spend time dressing up putting on lipstick, tattoos, warts - you name it. :D

It's basically like playing payday in vr but you're standing in one spot the whole time. The aim is not very accurate compared to onward and the guns don't respond the same way either. It kind of feels like playing a cheap arcade.
The graphics are so-so even on high. I wasn't impressed.

I'm a big fan of payday but this game feels very lacking.

Glad I've missed out on that very short bundle that was up. There was so little information about the John Wick VR thing that I wasn't sure what it was but I was willing to grab it at the last minute if only to get Dead By Daylight as well except I missed the bundle by maybe 8 hours. I'm sure these wave shooters are fun but they are a ton of them already.

Yeah the payday mechanics don't work well in this game because in payday you can at least move around and pick different spots depending on where the enemy comes from and switch up your strategy. In this you're basically in a wave shooter that gets exponentially harder if you don't kill your targets and all you can do is take cover from one side assuming the exposed side isn't spawning bad guys. They even throw grenades at you and you can't run away from it so you better hope it lands somewhere in front of you so you can throw it back in time or you're toast.

This game needs a serious rework of physics, accuracy, and let you teleport or move around the map so maybe you could even punch or pencil them. (if you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about)

Ugh, doesn't valve have three different games in development as we speak? Ouch.

Edit: nevermind, they sourced it from here without quoting the rest. It's not so bleak after all:

It's actually quite positive.

Yeah, that quote really doesn't imply he thinks it will be a failure. He's just saying that whether or not it ultimately succeeds or fails, they are still putting 100% effort into VR.

Just watched a youtube video from Node where they play it. Wow that John Wick VR is just, I mean, I'm very glad I've missed it now.

Saw this on e-bay it looks really good if you are into the Onward game though it seems a bit expensive. Kind of like the earlier posted by Swolern but this one is 3d printed and uses magnets instead of the clip.

I hear Onward is great and that looks very nice. Not sure about $75 nice though. Although having not played Onward maybe my opinion could be changed if the game is that fun to where I wouldn't mind springing the money to make my enjoyment greater.

I can see the HTC tracking puck getting integrated into a custom, fully made for Onward weapon peripheral eventually by someone - real grips, trigger, charging handle, magazine eject button, etc.

Edit: Never mind... Looks like someone is already on it:

A lot of folks over on the Vive sub-Reddit are proclaiming this price to be amazing, and that they expected $150-200.

My reaction to that is...for a plastic head strap and some headphones? Really? I was expecting around $50-75. I guess it depends on how good the headphones end up being, but there is no way I'm buying this without some reviews first.

It's got to be better than the included head strap, right? I'd say that $100 is about the middle of reasonable but that will all depend on how good it is obviously. I'm pretty much automatic on this. The default head strap is getting way on my nerves. I've been playing a title called Knockout League that's pretty physical and the head set has a hard time staying on especially after some perspiration.

Heh, called it as arriving in 2-3 months from now in the other thread. Will be a no brainer purchase for me as well. It's more than just replacing existing soft straps - it's a complete harness with dial adjustable tensioning that's spring loaded for easy on/off - much like the Rift. I demo mine all the time to visiting family/friends and having to fumble around with all those straps on the existing headset really sucks - not to mention taking on and off a separate pair of headphones. I'm also thinking that it may include the newer all in one integrated cable as well. If so, then ya, the $99 price tag seems reasonable and it solves a few major gripes I had with my Vive over my Rift.

Fair enough...for me, I already have good earbuds and made a DIY strap using a welding helmet thing and some 3D printed parts (for far less than $100) so it doesn't make as much sense to me, even though the DIY mod is not perfect. I was in for ~$50 but for $100 it's a pretty hard sell.

Which again seems pretty expensive when you can get a full controller for $130. This is for developers but I believe it was more or less confirmed to be the same price for consumers (likely they just want developers to have the first shot at getting some).

Hmm I am surprised it didn't have the hole in the center but I guess due to the battery.

Yeah, I don't think the hole is needed really on the main controller...my guess is it's there to keep the weight down and possibly improve tracking.

I believe these mount via a screw mechanism on the bottom, kind of like the base stations.

Yeah but the hole made some interesting modding options like all the DIY type gun mounts. :)

Can you use a different pair of headphones that won't make you sick? I mean, syncing problems and lag...

Wut?! Whom are you asking this and what exactly are you asking? What you have stated makes no sense. Your question is non sequitur.
Maverick's post about the headphones. It was a quick question, one that I've been wondering - if I could use any wireless headphones instead of the included ones for the same effect.

Well, ok. Your quoting Heatlesssun and then asking something about headphones threw me for a loop. Toke on!

I like the head strap as well, at the top end though for price for me. If the sound is not good then I will probably pass and wait for someone else which shouldn't be too long. I use Bose in ear pieces and they work great, except for the excess cord which I can accidently rip them out of my ears by being active. They are best if tucked inside of the shirt but I never seem to do that.

As for the trackers, I hope for $99 it comes with two, otherwise it would just be better to use the controller for most things.

Has anyone hooked up more lighthouses for the Vive, like having four of them running? Is it possible? Could that make your play area much larger since you could overlap them.

I can't find it now, but I read an article where someone tested this...I *think* you can technically use 3+ basestations but the hand-off between rooms doesn't work correctly. If I find the article I'll edit and post.

I think you have to actually add it to the cart and then checkout, there you'll see a option to apply for PayPal 0% financing for up to 24 months.

Eww, Paypal.. So looks like its just the same generic Paypal Credit option you have with any Paypal purchase.

I thought this was something special HTC was doing, similar to how Google offers 0% financing for phones purchased for Project Fi. Oh well.

You need to use wireless headphones with RF only, Bluetooth has too much latency.

Re: headphones - why use wireless headphones at all? Get a shorty cable or bundle up your headphone's cable with a twist tie, and plug it in on the headset. It has the audio jack right there.

Good headphones usually have a larger soundstage for better spatial awareness in VR. Although earbuds are convenient. I like both depending on my mood. Wireless is just one less wire to have to manipulate around your head/neck, definitely worth it.

I used Logitech g930 headset. I like it since it has 3 programmable buttons on the left ear that you can program for any function
