Thanks to someone getting a Switch early we now know that digital purchases are FINALLY tied to the account and not to the system. Why they didn't announce this during the event or at ANY point baffles me. People have been bitching about this since the DSi and Wii, announcing that the stupid restriction is gone would have gotten them a ton of praise during that horrible event.
It was already tied into the account during the later half of the 3DS' lifecycle and the Wii U. Just, in usual Nintendo fashion, you had to call support if you wanted to transfer consoles.

Which in my view, was worse. They already had the system in place, but chose not to use it (or at least not expose it in a more user friendly way, as Xbox and PS have shown).

http://www.gamezone.com/news/nintendo-takes-back-leaker-s-early-nintendo-switch-3451010

A couple days ago, a random NeoGAF user by the name of hiphoptherobot claimed he had gotten a Nintendo Switch shipped to him early. People questioned his credibility so he posted a video of the console booting up and then a walkthrough of the menus. It gave us our first look at the system's UI and from the sounds of it, Nintendo was not too happy about this.

User hiphoptherobot reported via NeoGAF today that Nintendo tracked him down and retrieved the Switch without compensating him at all. His money was not given back and Nintendo did not say they'd give him any sort of replacement when the system officially releases.

"Not sure if I can really talk about it but I will say Nintendo has the console back and I am personally not in any trouble. Other than being out a console and the money I paid for it which really sucks with all the bills I have right now but it isn't going to be the end of the world or anything."

http://kotaku.com/leaked-switch-was-stolen-nintendo-says-1792521813

On Thursday, a NeoGAF user posted videos from a Nintendo Switch that he said he obtained two weeks early from an “unnamed store.” Today, he says he sent it back—and Nintendo says it was stolen “by employees of a U.S. distributor.”
Really sucks Nintendo didn't compensate him and give him his money back.

I don't know, I don't feel too much sympathy for the NeoGAF user. There's no way he wouldn't have known something was fishy about receiving the console as early as he did - and the way he went about concealing how he got it is really shady. I think he should just feel lucky he's not being charged with 'possession of stolen goods'.

With that said, the leak and its detailing of the Switch's UI has been the most exciting bit of news to be released concerning the Switch lately. No idea why Nintendo is being so secretive about the details of the Switch this close to launch.

Dude must have slipped the GameStop clerk and extra twenty with his pre-order. LOL!

File sizes for a few more games have popped up. Puyo Puyo, Setsuna, and Snipperclips all come in at under 2GB. Nobunaga's Ambition comes in at 5GB. MK8D is 7GB. Then there is DQH 1 and 2 at 32GB, ouch.

Looks like the file sizes mean I can download at least a few games from the store. I can't imagine Street Fighter will be that large of a game. Arms, too.

When I try to edit my user name it says I am editing my password.

Thier Nintendo Account creation is fucked up. I log in with my Nintendo ID, it asks me to verify info for the Nintendo Account....I do, then it asks me for a verification code from an email. I never get the email, so I try again. Eventually I get the email. I put in the verification code and it tells me it's invalid (code is supposed to be valid for 1 hour). I try a couple more times with the code and eventually it just says Access Denied.

Even trying to create a new account does not work. Tells me the verification code is sent...never shows up. Not in junk, spam, or otherwise.

EDIT: Got it to work using a different email address. Apparently Hotmail is on their shitlist or something...I only ever got one verification email from them on that address and it didn't work.

This further reinforces my assumption that Nintendo does not know how to properly run a digital marketplace platform.

I won't ever use Nintendo digital services because they simply don't have the reputation for it. If I end up getting a switch (which I'm really trying to talk myself out of), I'd be buying all physical copies of the games.

And there is nothing wrong with buying a copy at a local store.

Why not have the joycon mounting grip be trianglular "V" shaped, so that the buttons end up being in a more natural position? I guess a 3rd party grip/charger will do this, or at least I hope so...

Switch unboxing from Nintendo:

The two hosts are a bit grating and it's shot from a static camera angle. I believe GameXplain and other channels will have unboxings up tomorrow so there will probably be better ones up.

Observations from video:

*Minor thing: I really like how it's packaged in the box. Nintendo always does a really good job with system packaging.

*I know the Switch is only 6.2" but I'm still blown away by how small it is. Even if we're just talking about a second generation Maxwell Tegra the amount of hardware power packed into that small of a size is still impressive.

*I really like the port layout on the Switch. Everything makes a lot of sense and with how indented the USB-C port is it should be possible to get an angled USB-C cable so you can still play it in kickstand mode, or whatever it's called.

*I love that the Joy-Cons have a nice click when connected. Good way to tell you when they're connected and it just sounds satisfying.

*These two are really annoying.

*The dock is a lot bigger than I expected, kind of looks like it's similar in size to the Wii mini. It does look nice, but not $90 nice.

*While this was announced a while ago I'm glad the straps/bigger shoulder buttons for the Joy-Cons ships with the system, will make using them so much nicer. Kinda dumb that they're not packed in with the controllers when you buy them separately.

*Even the straps click when connected, I approve.

*The grip with the Joy-Cons in them still looks uncomfortable.

*AC adapter brick reminds me of old consoles, though it's a bit smaller than the monster bricks that were required back then.

Missed this story from this morning due to all the Ryzen excitement, but looks like your digital Switch games *will* be tied to your console. So, looks like having digital games tied to your account isn't that big of a deal since you're unable to play your digital library on different systems.

I'm sure there will be some sort of system in place if your personal Switch kicks the bucket (probably involving a long winded phone call to Nintendo).

http://www.siliconera.com/2017/02/23/testing-nintendo-switchs-battery-life/

Being able to play the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild anywhere sounds like an awesome idea, but how long will the battery on the Nintendo Switch last? Earlier this week Siliconera received a system from Nintendo and that was the first thing we tested out.
We charged the Nintendo Switch’s battery to full power and starting playing the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. After 2 hours and 39 minutes of exploring Hyrule a message appears in the top left of the screen saying the battery was running out and the system would go to sleep mode soon. The battery was at 1% when the warning popped up. We were able to play the Zelda for 9 more minutes before the system went into sleep mode. That’s a total of 2 hours and 48 minutes using the default brightness setting.

Next, we tested how long it would take to charge the Nintendo Switch to full power. The Switch needed four minutes of charging time before we could turn the system on again. After one hour of charging, the system’s battery power was at 45%. It took 2 hours and 11 minutes to charge the battery to 90% and 3 hours and 4 minutes until the battery was at 100%.

2 hours and 48 minutes is pretty close to Nintendo's estimated 3 hours. Honestly I would have thought it would be closer to 2 and a half, since those numbers are always under ideal conditions. Charging time is pretty much what Nintendo said it would be as well. So that's....Good....I think.

I guess that isn't bad, but once you get used to Quick Charge devices it's painful to charge an older device. My phone can gain a 30% charge in like 10 minutes.

Yeah. Though quick charge does have a big downside: It heats up batteries more than slow charging potentially degrading them faster. Though so can wireless charging and my phone is almost always sitting on my charger. It's a pity the Switch doesn't offer either as an option.

I'm still tempted to snag one, but I'll have to wait until more hit the open market because I wont be paying 2x-5x the retail price on EBay. ;)

I'm going to call around stores in town on launch and see if I can find one. If not, oh well. Not gonna join the folks camping out though. I'm seeing Logan the night before plus I'm not insane enough to camp out somewhere in the middle of the bloody winter, especially not for a game console.

I'm sure you would for hookers and blow.:D

To go along with Siliconera's tests GameXplain did their own battery tests on Zelda. They decided to really push the system. 100% brightness, auto-brightness off, wifi on, max sound volume. The only concessions they made to preserving battery life was to have the joy-cons fully charged before docking them to the system. They found a spot to leave Link and didn't touch the system except to keep it from going to sleep. Total battery life under those conditions: 2 hours and 28 minutes before the Switch shut itself down.

Considering that if I'm on a plane (or some situation where I can't charge it), I doubt I'd end up with all that stuff cranked. With more reasonable settings I bet 3 hours is more feasible. Not perfect, but it's within the length of most of my flights.

Gamexplain (or someone) should do the test again under different parameters, like constant playing, brightness down, wifi off...

So there are some fairly major issues with the Joy Cons:

Looks like there is a price to pay for that 20 hour Joy-Con battery life. I plan on using the Switch in either handheld mode or using the included Joy-Con Grip pretty close to the Switch so I should be unaffected. However, those of those sitting on the couch in docked mode with "free hand" Joy-Cons will probably experience this issue. Nintendo might be able to Day 1 firmware update to alleviate some of the desync problems but it might be a limitation of the console like with the Wii sensor bar and direct sunlight.

Jeff Gertsman of Giant Bomb said on Twitter that he replicated the issue at about 13 to 15 feet away from the Switch. Definetly not ideal but still a pretty good distance away, at least assuming that the 13-15 feet holds up in every scenario. It's something Nintendo will need to address though and hopefully it's something that can be fixed in the launch update.

I really want one but feel like I could just get breath of the wild for wii u and wait for the console to materialize on store shelves. I think inventory management might be an issue on Switch as well as the game was designed for dual screens.

Also reading that there are frame rate issues with BOTW when switch is docked.

I suppose I could start BOTW on Wii U to get acquainted and stay off the main quest lines until I get the switch. I feel like when I encounter new areas of the game for the first time I really want to see them in their higher resolution switch versions, however. Sort of torn. I wonder how long it will be until we can just buy one.

Can you imagine how awesome a Metroid Prime game would be with the joy con to aim like in Trilogy. Also talk of a 2D Zelda. Could be awesome sauce.

I seriously doubt inventory management is going to be a problem on Switch version. Also from what I've heard from various sources (leaked previews/reviews and youtubers) is that the retail Switch version of BOTW is running smoother than what was demoed during events. The leaked Edge review only mentions Wii U having frame rate issues (reaching the teens at times). Both Switch and Wii U versions got a 10/10 score from Edge if anyone was curious.
