There's an R610 at work that we've phased out. I've sold it's 2 brothers to my former company, and this one was left behind being used as a proof of concept before we bought a new R430.
Dual hex, 192GB RAM, and thanks to the upgrades, a PERC 6/i and 3 trays (with just 64gb SSDs, since we had dozens sitting around). I can snag some old 256GB SSDs to swap out with the 64s for VMs. I need more capacity though, and I have a couple 2.5" 1TB 5400 sitting around at home that can do for that. I just need trays. No big deal.
I've been debating between it or grabbing one of the dozen T320s we are phasing out, as half of those have a single hex, which is way more than necessary. But, they all just have 8GB RAM. I can max it out at 24 before having to go buy stuff. the 3x1TB 3.5" drives might suit my needs for capacity, but I'll need trays and adapters if I want SSDs for the actual VM storage.
Obviously, the R610 is the better system for my needs, but I remember the R210ii I had, and how it was always an ever-present sound in my apartment. Now I have a house. And a utility room. I'd have to run network cable to it...or go all in on wireless and just move the whole NOC stuff into the room. That's actually more likely.
But how can I reduce the noise? I don't want to hear it whine all the time, but I'd be an idiot not to take advantage of having a "free" (so long as I remain employed there; perks of being SysAdmin) R610 as a home server to replace my NUC.
