Suggestions on making a 1U quiet?

There's an R610 at work that we've phased out. I've sold it's 2 brothers to my former company, and this one was left behind being used as a proof of concept before we bought a new R430.

Dual hex, 192GB RAM, and thanks to the upgrades, a PERC 6/i and 3 trays (with just 64gb SSDs, since we had dozens sitting around). I can snag some old 256GB SSDs to swap out with the 64s for VMs. I need more capacity though, and I have a couple 2.5" 1TB 5400 sitting around at home that can do for that. I just need trays. No big deal.

I've been debating between it or grabbing one of the dozen T320s we are phasing out, as half of those have a single hex, which is way more than necessary. But, they all just have 8GB RAM. I can max it out at 24 before having to go buy stuff. the 3x1TB 3.5" drives might suit my needs for capacity, but I'll need trays and adapters if I want SSDs for the actual VM storage.

Obviously, the R610 is the better system for my needs, but I remember the R210ii I had, and how it was always an ever-present sound in my apartment. Now I have a house. And a utility room. I'd have to run network cable to it...or go all in on wireless and just move the whole NOC stuff into the room. That's actually more likely.

But how can I reduce the noise? I don't want to hear it whine all the time, but I'd be an idiot not to take advantage of having a "free" (so long as I remain employed there; perks of being SysAdmin) R610 as a home server to replace my NUC.

Ok, after bringing it home...I need to look at something else.

Either I add it back to the pile of servers I have to sell off, or I go for more drastic measures...I move it out to the unattached garage. I have power out there, but I'd have to get the network out there. I can move my switch out there, as it'll support VLANs, and just go down to the switch I have on the back of the router for inside the house. I'd need to buy an Ethernet over Power adapter that will do gigabit.

But, I'm worried about the complete lack of climate control. The garage is insulated, but that only helps so much.

Anyone have some insight?

Just my 2c worth since I've been there with 1u's in the house.

Sticking with the 1U. I wish I had something that beefy.
If you have a room your willing to use, I would go for that. Like you said, it would be climate controlled vs the garage. Depending on the room configuration, maybe making some sound deadening with foam or buying some specialty stuff.

If this is the T320 you're talking about. Is the board really nerfed to only support 1 socket and 4 dimm slots?

With a setup like that, selling it would prob get you a decent 2U+ setup. Or what about buying a new mobo/PSU/Case and transplanting what you have, then selling the 1u chassis to make up for a bit of the purchase?
