XFX Radeon RX 480 8GB is $180 AR and a free copy of Doom.

Wow, great price on a reference pcb. Those things are built like a tank.

Really great for water blocks as they stick to the reference PCB which is built like a tank as you said. ;) The Alphacool Eisbaer 240 CPU AIO Cooler where you can expand your loop as you grow your system, would be perfect for this card. So a budding enthusiast could start small, but smartly plan their purchases out so they end up with a full water loop at the end.

Think this would run good in my old rig in sig (i7 920 @ 3.8GHz, X58 system)?

Wow, this kind of pricing makes getting something on the used market, or even springing for a 1060 seem like wasteful spending. Especially if you wanted DOOM anyways. It's on my Steam wishlist for now...

Nothing wrong with their drivers. They are on top of their game for about a year now.

I haven't owned an AMD card in a very long time now, and I'm not saying that you're incorrect because I haven't followed the state of things, but I have been hearing that every year for what seems like the better part of a decade now. Every time the inevitable "Nvidia has superior drivers" post comes up, someone always says that those issues are in the past and that AMD has made great strides to improve their drivers. Every once in a while I will believe it and try an AMD card again, only to be disappointed. :p

Of course, maybe things really are better now...sadly, things could be different and I'll never know because my last dozen Nvidia cards have just worked and I'm content to stay where I am. :D But I want AMD to do well and remain competitive, regardless of the state of their drivers or whether I choose to own their cards.

You need to read the [H] articles. One on Relive and the one on the performance review. Ever since Crimson release and the departure of Catalyst, AMD drivers have been nothing short of excellent. Of course you have a little hiccup here and there. Had constant issues with my 1080 and GSync... No company is perfect.

I swear anyone who says AMD drivers are shit haven't owned one since the 7000 series.

Cool. I hope so. I haven't tried GSync but I read the other day that SLI isn't as good as CF these days (that seems to switch back and forth every so often). If AMD's drivers really are excellent these days then that's awesome.

Been looking into one of these for my play rig, was gonna hold off til I survived tax season. Now I want.

Yes. Different brand here, but rx480 runs great on the rig in my sig. Also x58 chipset board and about same processor speed.

Nice overclock on the i7-920 by the way.

Never had a problem with AMD drivers.
But then again I just buy the cards, stick them in my computer and play games on them.
Oh and surf the internet... and email.... you know... just do stuff on the computer.

I've got 2 1080's in the house and a 1060. Did have a 980 around that had replace a 780.
But I also have 2 480's that replaced 2 270's that replace 2 5770's. Had a 6950 unlocked for a looooooonnnnggg time.
Vga, dvi, hdmi, dp ... they're all hooked up to some different shit. One of the 1080's is hooked up to a projector through a receiver but before that it was one of the 270's.

I could go on and on.

What the hell is everyone doing that they run into situations where they can say that they have "driver problems" with either company?

Like the $167 something I got my STRIX for after NE promo code, Ebates CB, Selling Doom, Price matching Amazon, and MIR.

I bit on this. The price point I had in mind for the RX 480 8GB was $185. I was hoping for Amazon (to use gift cards) and no rebate, but this beat my target price and includes a game I can sell (already have it) making the cost even lower. I like the fact that it is a reference design, too. I will probably end up adding it to the loop, just have to make sure I have the capacity to handle the extra heat.

I bit on this. Gonna be a nice upgrade from my 6850!

Also threw in some more ram.

Plus, Free Doom!

wondering if RX 480 crossfire is worth it for 3440x1440? thinking of getting a new 34" monitor.

Damn back plate hits my memory slots. I had use the other slot. I guess 8x is not that big of deal anyway?

It doesn't even have tabs on that side, it hooks in and tabs on the top. Design fail by Asus. I'm not going to return it. I haven't done the rebate yet but I'd still get charged the $60 for Doom. I'm thinking of getting another similar card with out the back plate for crossfire, trading it or just living with it the way it is. I could just trade it for the 970 in my son's rig but he is using a VGA side monitor. My oldest son is going to build a new computer soon so I might be able to pawn it off on him.
