Is sound 3D?

I know there's a lot of hoopla about VR and 3D visuals - but what about the sound?

If I was to move my head to the left, does the sound stay where it is on the sound stage or will it move with my head?

3D sound is part of the deal with VR and is integrated into both Steam's and Oculus' APIs.

I know in Serious Sam VR 1st Encounter - you can tell where Mental forces are coming from and as you turn it accurately follows. Croteam uses their own 3d positioning sound which they developed over a decade ago and it seems really good. Yes for good VR you need good 3d positioning of sound as well.

Yeah, I wasn't too sure how sound was implemented in VR. I'll have to look into making VR videos - I'd like to get my trips on VR so that I can go back to them later.

Most things it works very well.
Not so good with Project Cars though, I cant tell if an another cars engine noise is coming from in front or behind.
Consider that it isnt a ground up VR title, perhaps that has contributed.

mos tlikely project cars has bad 3d positional sound to begin with..

3d sound for VR isn't anything special, this is all stuff built in since Direct3d Sound came out.. direct3d already has the capability of positional sound based on the camera position.. This is nothing different than if you where to point your mouse in a normal non-vr setting.
