Whoops, I’ve ended up in the degenerate corner of tech news again. NVIDIA and AMD fans can be a heated bunch, but I didn’t know they were literally stabbing each other over hardware now. (Are you guys in the video card forum okay over there?) Unfortunately, the articles do not seem to mention the important stuff, like which graphics cards they were arguing over.

…a Russian programmer "hacked" his friend with a knife after a disagreement about NVIDIA vs. AMD. The man murdered his friend with a kitchen knife by striking him twice on the head and then stabbed his friend another eleven times after he was already dead. He then burned the body in the attempt to cover the crime. It appears that the argument was the result of drinking alcohol and there may have been something in the alcohol to result in such a violent reaction over graphics card makers. The tragic event happened over a year ago, but the conviction was only recently handed down by the court to 31-year-old Aleksander Trofimov, responsible for murdering 37-year old Evgeny Lylin in Saransk, Russia. He was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for the crime he eventually admitted to committing.

And when peeps ask me why I'm not fond of drinking much, and when I do I nurse a beer a long time... this will be more ammo. Drunk driving, unwanted pregnancies, violent fights, etc... excessive alcohol consumption is bad, yo.

Sounds like a mix of alcohol and drugs based on the "there may have been something in the alcohol" comment. Drugs are bad..mmKay

It's funny how everyone has to be in a club. It's some sort of bizarre religious thing, politics, sports even videocards. Like you're afraid your dick will shrink if you admit your team or party might be shit or wrong. If AMD ever gets it's shit together I'll happily throw my underpowered shit in the garbage for whatever they got going on. As in sig, since Eyefinity/crossfire AMD power level has never bothered me, it's the driver support that's given me too many headaches to count. AMD needs to not just come out with a Big Dog card and proc. The shit needs to actually work.

Not sure where this guy is headed, but 9 years in a Russian prison = 25+ in the States

Warning: Adidas tracksuits may be NSFW

This is taking "Hold my beer and watch this!" WAY too far. Surprising that he only got 9 1/2 years for it.

Drinking alcohol doest make one do stupid things. It's just that tons of dumbasses take it as an excuse to do stupid things.

People need to practice some goddamned self control. If I killed every person I had the urge to kill I'd be serving a hundred life sentences right now

I've taken a lot of drugs in my life. The only drug that makes people aggressive is alcohol. I mean I've seen people bang their heads against solid walls and jump on minorities while on amphetamines but same people are worse with alcohol in their bloodstream.

Meth, real Speed, Heroine, synthetic Marijuana, and Cocaine are also known agitators.

Moderation is power, but I'm betting this dude had a whole bunch of clipped wires in his belfry and just didn't need any drug added to the mess.

I'm no Drugologist, but I'm willing to bet there is a number of drugs that can make people go to the cuckoo side. I'm willing to bet that number goes up, when mixing certain drugs with alcohol, which is really more of the point I was making. I was just being lazy by using a South Park quote.

Yeeeah...I don't think this really had anything to do with video cards.

Holy christ. Well if I lived in Russia, I would probably flip out and start stabbing people too! And it has nothing to do with video card fanboys.

People in Russia are just pissed off, so anything will trigger violent behaviors.

Same thing with the Middle East. If I lived in rock caves, I would be pissed off too, and just join a gang (ISIS), and start killing people for no reason.

Well, the self-control is generally not to drink so much in the first place. But if you do, one of the well documented effects of excessive alcohol consumption is that inhibitions and self-control go out the window. Back in college I made out with the most hideous warlock beast woman ever, and didn't believe my friend that cock-block rescued me how bad she was until I was shown pictures later and was in complete and total shock. My brain was certainly not firing on all cylinders.

So while a little bit of alcohol can act as a social lubricant by getting people to lower their inhibitions at parties and it releases dopamine to feel good and the like, too much leads to head butting your boss in the face, or in this case worse! In any case, without drugs/alcohol, I have a feeling stabby mcstabface would have chilled out and at most gave the bird and walked away.

I drink. Sometimes heavily. In most cases you wouldn't know I'm drunk, except for that I might talk a bit more than usual, or sometimes sing a bit.

Being drunk doesn't cause people to behave poorly. People just use being drunk as an excuse to do things they otherwise wouldn't, because they think it somehow, in some way excuses their or explains behavior.

It doesn't.

Yes, drinking lowers inhibitions, but if a person needs to stay sober so they don't kill someone or rape someone or whatever else, that just means they are letting their inner true self out, and their inner true self is a fucking sick psychopath.

I view people who punch walls, or scream like idiots when they are angry or lose at a video game, or take their anger out by abusing their pets in the same way.

I have a base expectation that as an adult human being, no matter how much you drink, no matter how upset you are, you still remain calm, collected and don't do anything harmful or illegal, and if you can't manage this, you don't belong in public.

Self control, impulse control, rage control. These are what separate us as human beings from the apes.

Could also just be genetics and diet (how much if any fatty food you eat) and mix with other legal drugs people are taking (like birth control, or antihistamines, etc), and that drugs affect people differently. To someone who has a very high alcohol tolerance, it may seem like everyone else is just pretending. *shrugs*

Simple minds look for the excuse, in this case alcohol, rather than blaming the individual.

I've been drunk plenty of times, always with friend, never once raised my fists against someone else. Same goes for my friends. Alcohol does not make bad people, they where always that way.

What an obnoxiously reductionist post.

You need to realize that you're not the median baseline in human behaviour. Cool, alcohol doesn't make you aggressive and that's great. Do all people have the same brain chemistry, though? You know they don't.

I go crazy when I drink coffee / green tea. So I don't. Yet, I see people drinking lots of it every day and they seem fine to me.

As for your last paragraph. You really need to spend some time with animals other than humans. Self control is not exclusive to us. I can't believe an intelligent person wrote all of this without a drop of sarcasm.

Moderation is key, though I've never seen people go aggro on heroin and meth. Quite the opposite really.

Something about this story reminds me of the story of Norwegian black metal band Mayhem whose bassist stabbed the bands guitarist to death, and this 2 years after one of their singers killed himself.

This is a pretty good read on the topic, if anyone is curious.

I did not read the whole thing yet (skimmed through it mostly) but so far I think the article is putting a bit too much weight on the sensationalistic news outlets and magazines of that time that were reporting on the scene. While black metal used Satanic imagery and lyrics none of them were Satanists. They were a bunch of angry antisocial kids doing stupid shit (including church burnings), starting rumors and living in power fantasy until it came crashing down. Varg Vikernes, who killed Euronymous, was the true nutjob of the bunch but even that was blown out of proportions by media and painted it with Satanic coloring even though Varg denied all of it. To this day he claims that he killed Euronymous in (pre-emptive) self defence because he was going to kill him. We know that Euronymous was a kid full of shit just like most of the guys in the scene, but Varg being an idiot he took the threat seriously. Dead had serious mental disorder and killed himself, not much to say about him otherwise. He was a sad case, really.

Documentary with interviews from the guys (Varg included) is on Youtube, called Until The Light Takes Us.

It's always someone or something else's fault. People really don't like to take responsibility for anything today.

If you want to kill someone over something as banal as this, there is a problem in your head, and it's not alcohol. It might help to suspend your inhibitors, but it doesn't make you a murderer.
