E3 should be mildly more interesting than usual this year. Aside from the event going public, which could mean brawls, stolen hardware, and other hysteria, Microsoft will evidently be unveiling the “most powerful console ever made.” Only a fool would be completely optimistic, as the Xbox team’s 4K effort would have to be quite expensive to truly live up to its claim, but I will nevertheless check in on the keynote to see what uninspired name will replace Scorpio.

Microsoft didn't flat out say it will show off Project Scorpio, but the photo it shared is the same it displayed at the end of its E3 keynote last year. It includes the image of an ultra-high-def 4K chip, a resolution that the current generation of Xbox doesn't support. Microsoft says Project Scorpio -- coming in the fourth quarter of 2017 -- is both the future of Xbox and the most powerful game console ever made. The catch is that it doesn't play any new games but instead will play older games at much better resolution.

Absolutely possible, even simple. It's making it pretty and 4K that's somewhat more difficult.

And rather expensive to boot.

I'm not saying it isnt possible, but for it to be an affordable console and to do it at 6 teraflops (i know there is more to it than that but still), I just see it as highly unlikely. Unless they have some crazy optimizations for it.

Well, I can tell you from first-hand experience upgrading from a PS4 to a PS4 Pro that the methods being used to push 4K on consoles is very very impressive. The "checkerboarding" that is being used in games like Watchdogs 2 is super impressive. Another perfect example of it is Uncharted 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and especially Ratchet and Clank. The 4K they are able to achieve on those games on the console is incredible (especially with HDR), and to me is virtually indistinguishable from native 4K (which most high-end PCs nowadays can't achieve either at 60fps on High settings). I am super excited for the Scorpio and it feels like it's been a long time coming and it's about time we get a date to look forward to for the reveal.

I was really just referring to how hard these companies are spinning those "4K" numbers. They sound good until anyone actually examines these claims.

Fortunately most people are going to be using this console for better 1080p, that's where the real focus should be anyway.

if microsoft makes the scorpio an extension of xbone, making the latter the lowest common denominator for games it would be mighty stupid of them if the console is as powerfull as they say, it needs to be a standalone with it's own exclusives raising the quality of the games made, rather than just buff up fps and resolution, because let's face it, xbone is a failure, and having another console that works as a booster for the same games isn't that appealing, the line up sux, just get on with it and focus on the new one.
pros : you get multi platform games, and your exclusives would push it to where the PS4 can't reach.

Looking forward to 1080p/60FPS more than 4K, but good 4K would be great, as I have a 4K TV. I don't totally buy the "no exclusives" thing, either. I think either they will go back on that sooner or later (probably sooner), or games will run on the old hardware, but be severely downgraded to unplayability (Destiny on PS3/X360). Hopefully MS at least has patches for the big 1st/2nd party titles at launch (Halo 5 plz). Unless they botch hard, I'm getting it regardless.

I mean it mostly seems your post is just bashing xbox, but I feel there is a couple good points in it.

The games are the same that are on ps4. And honestly halo and gears of war and forza grab more people than uncharted and little big planet. If they create a new platform this early then there is a lot of software sales that is lost. I think this is the best method because they can make this a higher power xbone and then migrate, meaning new games in 3 years will then just start saying 'scorpio required'. Also alienating the xbone users and leaving them completely behind can create a bad taste that would push more toward ps4 regardless of the power of scorpio. Because the fact that any xbones were sold regardless of power and price, shows that the company had brand loyalty, which can carry pretty far but this time around maybe not as much.

I have both sets of systems currently because i got xbone at launch because of my experience with xbox 360, i built up quite a library so far and many of my friends play on it as well. After getting my ps4pro i felt "damn I should have started with ps4". Although it seems like sony does kind of disconnect from the customers where as it seems like microsoft tries to engage the community and does have a much better customer support service.

I wouldnt say xbone was a failure, no it didn't 'defeat' ps4 but it also didn't just vanish in the wind either. Kinect specifically might be considered a complete failure, which is one reason I got xbone, i enjoyed the hell out of kinect but then watched as microsoft and all the devs just abandoned it slightly after launch.

It's like people just want things to fail. Only happy when they're miserable.

It is the internet, people just like to bash everything. I like to bash people that senselessly bash, so I kind am of the same breed.

Declaring it now - Xbox's Hank Scorpio doesn't come with a doomsday device and flame thrower or it is a total flop!

Or some people are just tired of endless marketing smoke being blown up their asses, and have learned to temper their expectations and wait for reviews/benchmarks. After all, the Xbox One was promised to be the "bestest console ever" and we saw how that launch turned out. "TV TV TV!" and underpowered from the get-go.

Hell, Microsoft didn't even want to allow customers to purchase physical discs, until Sony spanked them and they retreated.

I honestly haven't seen a pro in action in person so I cant really say anything first hand, just all of this marketing is hard to believe when so many of us have hardware a couple of times more power than these consoles yet it seems to be a struggle for us but they promise better performance on a console (guess I want to see it to believe it kind of thing), it is shitty the devs arent optimizing for computer hardware like they do on the console when there is way more headroom. :-/

Not-for-nothing but can we keep this Reddit-like shit out of the [H] forums? I personally hate that sub for how obnoxious they are, and I enjoy coming here for more mature discussion whether it's console or PC gaming related. Obviously do whatever you want at the end of the day; i'm just saying.

I got my kids a PS4 two years ago for Christmas. About the same time, I also gave them some of my older computers - not the latest, but still decent. Man, I wish I had my PS4 money back. It largely sits in our family room powered off. They might play a dance game (using the camera) every now and then, but most of the time they are playing Roblox.
I'm sure they won't care about this either. I might - if it has some type of DVR features and continues to support Plex.

I don't browse Reddit. Thank you very much.

to give you an exemple, i have a friend at work who wanted to buy a PS4, it was annoying explaining to him why he should pay an extra 100€ to get a pro instead of the regular ps4, and i listed some solid arguments about it's value from VR to resolution to fps, but the guy doesn't even care about any of it, to him 30fps and 60 fps are the same, 720 or 1080p are the same, and VR is just like 3D TVs, and another friend who have the regular PS4 isn't at all tempted by the Pro...thats the vast majority of ppl, they dont know and dont care, they just look at a game and see how good it looks to decide if they want it or not.
all this just to say if M$ takes the same route as sony did it wont work as well as they think it would, and the PS4 pro have alot going for it, much more than what scorpio will have, and yet the sales arn't great for sony.
i know it's hard to do otherwise without pissing off some xbone users, but ppl would be pissed no matter what you do.
so just get on with it and show case the console with some truely new gen game, that would help them sell much more, than advertising 60 fps and 4k capabilities.

I can get behind that. I can see many people looking at it "well both play the same games, but this one is cheaper". I mean it really is why there was such a spike in ps3 and xbox360 sales with the new console launches and price reductions of the then previous gen systems.

I do kinda feel that features are for about 5% of the market and exclusives are maybe a bit higher and the rest is driven by price. The loudest on the internet are for sure about specs and features but by far do not represent the majority.

edit: I also feel like no one knows about the ps4pro. Very little to no marketing for it. And yet I see commercials for the ps4slim bundles several times a day.

Coming soon...Halo 4K

Just kidding. But probably not. It will be
about the games or I'm not doing it. My ps4 collects dust for the most part

To be fair, it sounds like your work friend would be wasting his money on the Pro. Sony has already said that all PS4 games will work on the basic PS4 and on the Pro, so if your friend doens't care about FPS or resolution or anything like that then he might as well just get the much cheaper slim.

That said, the PS4 Pro may not be selling as well as the basic PS4, but that is too be expected. According to Sony it has exceeded their own sales expectations which means they are selling more of them more quickly than they anticipated. That doesn't mean its a knock out home run success, but it does mean it is doing better than they accounted for which means at the very least it has been and will likely continue to be a profitable endeavor for them.

My biggest concern with the Scorpio is that Xbone sales are already low, now they are fragmenting things further and there is a very good chance Scorpio will be $500+. Unless they just eat it I don't see how they could launch it at $400, and by the time it launches I'm sure Sony would be willing to release a price cut on the PS4 Pro to further mess with their plans.

This console is basically their next-gen console that they will force developers to continue using the current dev-kit for.

Kinda smart really. The frame rate and resolutions will go through the roof for all existing games and all future games.

Hopefully the Xbox interface actually runs smooth on it because, for being as simplistic as it is, it drags ass everywhere.

Man people are salty. Let the console release, bash it when it doesn't perform.

Oh, I have no doubt it will perform...the bashing is going to be over the software selection, lack of exclusives, and the price! If it's over $400 it's doomed.

If you are a gamer at all, it shouldn't be collecting dust! Not with games like Nioh out! Or the upcoming Horizon...or Rez Infinite (VR supported, but not required!)...there are TONS of good games on it that you simply can't play on any other platform!

Well, with the new 4.50 update (which I am running in Beta) it makes ALL PS4 games run smoother, updated for the Pro or not...and if it HAS been updated, even at 1080p, you get enhanced visuals on most titles. Also VR is NOT like 3DTV! Whatever your PERSONAL view on it is, in the marketplace it's doing VERY well! Maybe you should try it before bashing it?

Oh? And how does that work with someone who enjoys both and owns both? Should I just say that unless you are running 2 video cards at the same time, you can not be a glorious pc gamer? ;)

It's a problem with how most people think about any given topic/subject: they think they have to choose sides.

I'm a primary PC gamer but I own an Xbox One and plan to eventually get a PS4 for those exclusives. In this case I win because I don't blindly tether myself to any one platform based on brand loyalty.

I'm very much 4K Titan XP PCMR all the way , but also own a PS4 and PS4 Pro.

While vast majority of the time I play PC games , I feel like slumming it occasionally with the dirty whores just to change it up ;)
