appliance case like: HDPLEX H1.S
board: Asus Q170T/CSM mini-itx
CPU: i5-6600t

this has no fan, no water cooling.

would this work? building a pfsense appliance

I don't see why it would. Plenty of heatsink material there to passively cool something like that.

would i need to aim an el cheapo external to blow at it? lol (will also have SSD i forgot to add)

using this @home so i'm trying to minimize physical footprint.

outside of ATOM processor, are any of the i3/i5 lines that end in 'T' be capable of this or are the primary core i3/i5 process needing some fan or water cooling to remove heat out of the processors?

It's a question of power, and usually anything over 15-20W you want some kind of active cooling to avoid temperature problems. The case you linked is a unique solution, but installing your own heat pipes may be a bit of an extreme solution.

Why exactly are you set on a i3/i5 CPU for a pfsense box?

Even a passive heatsink requires some airflow, which is usually provided by a case fan or an exhaust fan via ducting. You can try it, but don't be surprised if you run into temp issues. You may find yourself having to drop the multiplier to lower the clock speed to make it easier to run without a dedicated CPU fan.

i already have one lol that's good to know though... anything about 15-20w requires some solution that actively moves the heat away.

thanks everyone!

HDPLEX H1.S
"Passive Cooling for 65W TDP CPU"

i5-6600T is 35W, you'll be fine. That case could cool a regular i5-6600.

While I am not speaking from personal experience with respect to passive cooling, I think some people in this thread might be misinformed. Intel's T-series chips are well known to work well in fanless builds. Frankly I wonder why people don't do it more often. It is also my understanding that large cases with plenty of airflow tend to work better when there is no active cooling. The Corsair Carbide Series 200R is one example, according to www.fanlesstech.com , because of its vents.

For some reasons small cases are associated with fanless cooling when they are the worst, avoid them at all cost. Components will need air and thus space.

By the way, did you also consider the Pentium G4400?

Ordered a fanned one. Should I stop and get the fanless one? Also don't modern boards have autonshutoff when temps too high?

Most recent boards will throttle the CPU speed to try and keep temps in check if they go too high.

There's also the Pentium G4600T but it doesn't seem to be widely available. The one I mentioned above might have more than the desired wattage.
