Hmm would one of these survive in a hot SFF case with minimal to no fresh air flow?

A fully passive system would object. That being said, the weakness in both of my silent builds have been damn PSU whine.Or you could just one of several silent at idle coolers out there?

True, but these style of cards are not intended to be cooled sans case airflow.
It's intended to put you in control of the fans and their noise level, but in my experience the on-card axial fans can easily be made "silent" for such a low-power card.

These cards will benefit most in cases where there is convection for top vents easily. I think a case like the Hutzy XS would be ideal (but don't take my word on if the tall heatsink actually fits in that case), in particular as the fins of the heatsink run vertically, easily allowing the hot air to rise.
