Dell Optiplex 790 MT - Ebay

Looks like I missed the good stuff :-( .

Need to pick something up so I can move my game servers off my media server.

I hope the Z420 and T3600 come down in price some more. That way I can keep the OEM power supply for a higher wattage GPU. Not to mention better VM options and ram slots.

The good thing about the Optiplex 790 is that it's a standard ATX PSU, so you can just get that $30-$40 430W (or something like that) PSU and be good on 99% of GPU's that won't be bottlenecked by the CPU.

Heck, I might throw my 3770K and Gene-V in here when I upgrade that system since a micro atx motherboard will fit. I'll just have to find a new air cooler and maybe tone down the overclock a bit (delid maybe).

Only the MT has ATX Psu. The DT SFF and uSFF use proprietary PSUs.

It's a $15 bonus to me. You just have to take that into account when looking for the deal you want.

When I was shopping for a used laptop last time, I ended up taking about 30 minutes to make a spreadsheet and came up with formulas that approximated the value of each of the extras in the ads (Docking station +$50, (numBatteries-1)*$20, i7 +$50, AC adapters -$0 (they're almost all fake), etc) and ended up getting a pretty smoking deal.

If you guys would use it, I could probably make a Google Doc or something like that for the i5/i7 machines on eBay, but the value changes are in the processor (mobo, case and PSU are given in every instance), and outright missing things are a small penalty (no drive caddy -$7, no HDD -$15), since I plan to bring a lot of my own stuff anyway.

There's probably some machine learning algorithm that could automatically pick up on all of that anyway, but I am not a developer :D

On the other hand, if you are looking at upgrading the GPU you are certainly not looking at the USFF and probably not looking at the SFF. Even if you are looking at adding a GTX 1050 to a SFF(is there anything more powerful that will fit?), the built in PSU is likely just fine.

Well I finally got my computer going from the mail. i7 3.4GHz 8GB ram, 320 gb platter drive. It was quite dusty inside on the heatsinks I dusted them off and when I turned it on it was windows 10 but it does come with a 10 and 7 key on the case.

I setup a tribes vengeance x2 server since nobody was running x2 at the moment and it took most of the day to work out the kinks in the server software but I just played with a bunch of people online on my new server and I'm super happy with it. I have a fiber optic connection so that's great for hosting. Best $163 I've ever spent. It was originally going to be for the family TV media center computer but now I'm going to keep it for myself, even though I don't really have it in the budget..

Now I want to get some more and run servers for my other favorite games. And I want to get solid state drives and silent fans.

I'm keeping the server up for now but when I get a chance to restart it I'm going to see if I can enable turbo boost to get to 3.7GHz.

Somebody mentioned this link earlier but I'll repost it. It's different than OPs link and I think it filters better computers it's where I found this one. I checked it every day for a few weeks before I found that deal.

I found another one just like mine only bigger hard drive:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optipl...781621?hash=item4b116b24b5:g:J88AAOSwLEtYmAFd

that's a really good deal. If I had the money I would grab that too and setup a second server. I mean $122 bucks for an i7 with 8GB of ram that's pretty hard to beat. I paid $40 more for mine and it has a smaller hard drive.

If that one gets sold don't worry guys just keep checking, they keep putting up new ones every week or two.

Just wanted to give a quick update after installing the SSD last week. I put a 160GB Intel 320 SSD in here and loaded it with Windows 10 while using the 320GB WD Blue drive as a game drive. Boots into windows within a few seconds from when I press the power button versus a couple minutes before and the desktop is usable right away. Games run just fine as well. I've only run relatively light games, although I have been playing Rainbow Six Siege at medium/high settings at 1080P with pretty much rock solid 60FPS.

TLDR: Get an SSD!

Mine supports the Intel Rapid Storage Tech stuff, so I wonder if that's worth a shot. I never did look into it to see if it was good or not.
If it works, it kind of saves me the headache of setting up a tiered storage methodology as I beef this thing up...

That's what I'm waiting on. Found some x5675 deals with gigs of ram, but I think I'll want SATA-3. Holding out a while for some x1650 servers to get more within what I want to spend on a lab/router/extra box.

I'm just going to pick up an optiplex 790 SFF i5-2400 / /128 SSD / 500 GB HD / DVD / 8GB / Win10 for $120 off CL.

I'm going to try putting my lp 1050 ti in it and see what my killawatt reports.

Turned out my CL buy was a 990 SFF, not sure if it actually differs from the 790. I swapped out the 128 SSD for my own 240GB SSD with win7 (since i'm using WMC on this). My MSI 1050 ti did fit. System power draw for FIreSrike 1.1 at 1920 x 1080 was 150W or less, both max GPU and CPU temps were less than 60. So, so far so good.

Just different chipsets. Looking it up, it looks like the 790 has the Q65 chipset, and the 990 has the Q67 chipset. The only thing I see different between the two chipsets is the the Q65 has 1 SATA3 and 5 SATA2 ports, and Q67 has 2 SATA3 and 4 SATA2. The 990 also lists support for Intel vPro with select processors, where the 790 doesn't mention it.

Don't forget your local off lease re-sellers. I got frustrated waiting on ebay and remember an old supplier we used at my last job. I called him up and asked what he had in an i5 2nd gen or newer, physical damage ok. I was able to pickup an optiplex 7010 with an i5-3470 for $100 with a small crack in the front face plate

*You want the person getting these forced down their throat by dell and hp. Not the people who buy them and "refurbish" them for resale.*

Although not a desktop, I picked up a Dell Latitude E5430 with a Gen 3 Core i5, 8GB RAM, 250GB regular hard drive, minor cosmetic damage off of eBay for $159. Ordered an extra travel charger and 9 cell battery. Dropped in a 250GB SSD I got for Christmas (thanks guavaball) and used the Windows 7 Pro key to activate Windows 10. A great little laptop all for ~$200 with accessories, no issues.

I don't know how you guys are getting these amazing deals but I've been looking for one for past two weeks and almost all of them are every expensive all over 150+ when considering the outrageous shipping costs. maybe I'm just looking at the wrong searches.

Do a general search for what processor you want. In the left column click PC desktops. Then click Buy it now to filter out auctions. Sort price + shipping low to high.

Some quick results after doing a search for "i5 2400"

True, I don't think you're gonna find an i7 3770 on it's own for much lower than that!

I've seen the dumb i7 2600 dell OptiPlex and HP one's go into $200 and above and cost way more than i5 3570 or even 4th gen i5's in some rare cases. I wonder if a lot of buyers are making the i5 2500 and i7 2700 expensive because they see the fancy high 8 or in some cases 16GB RAM and start bidding like crazy and jacking up the prices.

at ~150-$160 what would be a better deal?

i5 3570 @ 3.4
8GB DDR3
500GB HDD

or

i5 4570 @ 3.2
4GB DDR3
500GB HDD

is there much difference in performance between the 3570 and 4570? I'm assuming this two i5's probably perform better than previous gen i7 2600 all at stock speeds?

I'm thinking of paring it with maybe cheap 120 GB SSD and GTX 1050ti (maybe GTX 1060 6GB if I can find a good deal) and reuse the stock PSU and import the whole thing into Antec 900. Hopefully the motherboards and PSU are normal ATX size so it's an easy transplant.

Dell uses proprietary front panel connections. It can work if you put in the effort

Ohhhh what? So the power and reset switch might need to be tweaked? That sucks. Maybe I can cut the wires on the old dell tower and soder it onto the anted 900 power/reset switch. I'm sure the front USB ports should be direct plug right onto the motherboard.

The lights too. The pinouts are special so you have to consult a manual and switch them

Some but not all use funky power switch connectors. I got a used Optiplex that had a weird 2x3 pin header that was like 1/2 the normal size. It was for the power button and power led that sat inside the button.

I've got one just like that, with a 1050TI low profile. 8gb ram and a budget SSD. It's awesome :)
I also plan to add a 1050ti LP to my 990 DT. Just waiting on Gigabyte or GALAX to release them. Figured I'd wait since they will be clocked a little higher than the MSI. My AMD 7750 will continue until then.

ohhh yeah, I just scored and won the auction for Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 i5-4570 3.20Gz Win 10 Pro 4GB RAM 500GB HDD OFFICE 2010---- @$156 and free shipping. I hope it was a good deal. A bit more expensive than the i5 3750 or the i7 2600. I have a very tight budget of 400 to build a 1080p gaming machine for a buddy's son.

I don't think the stock 280W PSU has any extra 6 pin wires so no gtx1060 for me. Are there any other better GPU's than 1050ti that might play well at 1080p?

my thoughts:
get additional stick of 4Gb DDR3 to make it 8GB total
find a good GPU (gtx 1050ti or gtx 1060 3gb or rx 470???)
cheap ~$60 120GB SSD to make it snappy
transplant all the internals into new mid tower case unless Lenovo is even worse than dell when it comes to front panel connections. in that case, just sand and paint the existing case.

The GTX 1050Ti is basically on the same level as a GTX 680 or HD 7970, so it does 1080P fine. If you want to get a better GPU than that, I would recommend just getting this PSU https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0430-KR/dp/B00H33SDR4 .

Would definitely recommend that SSD. Maybe a slightly bigger size, although the included WD Blue 320GB HDD in this 790 is good enough for games.
