According to these images, Intel is trying to reinvent the detachable laptop with a curved screen. Acer has already done something similar with their $8,999 Predator 21 X—but wait, Intel is going even further by curving the keyboard portion as well. If you do a lot of lap typing, I guess this is for you…

One Intel patent, sent to us by the team at The Leaker, envisions a weird kind-of 2-in-1 laptop that boasts a curved screen. It’s relatively recent, dating back to last November, and describes an “electronic device with detachable curved display”. Figure nine is especially interesting. Unlike virtually every laptop, which is flat at the bottom, this one is curved. I’ve got mixed feelings about this. On flat surfaces, I can’t imagine this ever being remotely usable. But if I was working on a plane or bus, or anywhere for that matter where I’m away from my desk, I imagine having a laptop that fits the natural curvature of my leg would be pretty welcome.

I think this curved screen fad has run its course.

Seriously. Maybe they can bring it back when they start building displaying that take your entire wall.

Get me this in my living room and then we can reopen the discussion:

A curved screen on a laptop is just plain stupid, the screen is just too small physically to benefit from the curve.

Snowflakes will buy this, because it's "unique". But when is it not unique anymore and just "normal".

I could see the ergonomic aspect of the keyboard on a flat surface being useful, maybe. So is Intel heading into the Surface market?

i do like the curved keyboard though, my old microsoft split ergonomic keyboards were basically that shape, and i rather miss that since switching back to mechanical.

Hello ergonomics from hell. Didn't Microsoft illustrate that widening your elbows is better for mitigating carpal tunnel?

Yeah widening your elbows helps (therefore the split and angle), but so does positioning your hands closer to a vertical / hand shake position therefore the curve.

Ahh, I misinterpreted the curve as occurring on the same plane. A curve leaving only the outer edges touching the surface would make more sense. Of course, unless that curve can be flattened for transport, this thing is going to be hard pressed to go anywhere.

Good for cooling vents underneath as well. Maybe they'll will create a curved thin power brick you can attach underneath magnetically when you stash it in a bag, to take advantage of the space. Of course, making the whole chassis flexible is even better, now that we have OLED for the screen, and shaped memory materials so the frame can snap into specific orientations, we can just make the whole laptop bendy and this patent becomes a bit boring all of a sudden.

Intel patent inb4 Apple patents it and claims it as being "our most <insert fancy tagline> MacBook ever".
