Let the 1080Ti Waiting Game Continue

Thought rather than the typical clickbait, this at least provided some reasoning behind the speculation.

Honestly it makes sense to wait until Computex or E3 since there's no competition. Could be June for all those still waiting. Perhaps an odd coincidence, but the 1080 went back up to pre-rebate and discount prices on B&H and Amazon after this article was published.

Vega happened. Nvidia needs to hold the release so they have something to compete with until they get their refreshed cards out.

They are stupid to hold off, since a lot of buyers who have 900 generation cards are probably waiting for the ti variant of the 1080 to upgrade.

Well, my theory is that the 1080Ti will be a direct rebranding of the TitanX. Same cores, same memory, same/simillar clocks. The Titan X is already a binned chip, so dissabling it further does not make much sense.

What about the sales of the TitanX? Won't they tank? No, because Nvidia will release a fully-enabled TitanX with 15% more performance and immediately EOL the current TitanX. All the trust-fund kids and hyper-enthusiasts will jump to the new Titan and have to sell their current Titans for less than the 1080Ti.

The only rumor that I know of about the specs of the 1080 Ti is a 10 GB card. The claim is that it's 'as fast' as the Titan X. With Volta so close to release, if you don't have a Titan yet and you want a card as fast as one, just wait for Volta (I'm still predicting second half of this year for consumer Volta).

It's not coming, there's a Pascal refresh on the way and it'll be the GTX 2080 or something.
The Titan XP is already a cutdown chip. No one would want to buy old, third-cut silicon as the 1080 Ti when a refresh exists.

Unless Nvidia plans to do nothing until Volta Q1 2018 which will depend entirely on Vega. As much as people want a 1080 Ti, if Nvidia announced one it would actually be pretty sad news all around.

I wouldn't count on a 1080Ti not making an appearance simply because I think a 10GB card could be a nice jump for those that don't want to spring for a full Titan. Playing on a 3440 x 1440 display now, I'm already seeing 6GB used on a 1080 FTW at 2.1GHz for current games, so I'm sure the folks that want to go 4k, but not spend on a Titan might want that 10GB sweet spot.

Regarding Volta, I don't think we're going to see that for at least another 18 months. The 1080Ti will be the answer to Vega, and the Titan owners can still be happy at the top with their 12GB card. I speculate that we're not going to see the 1080Ti for a few more months though.

2 years between the 1070/1080 and their replacements would be ridiculous especially since we just got a new node.
If Volta is that far away then Nvidia will squeeze out a Pascal refresh this year for sure.

Volta is not "close to release" at all. Volta is first coming to that Summit supercomputer and even that has been pushed back well into 2018.

It was always going live in 2018 but Volta was being shipped 2017 for it.
What is the source saying the project has been pushed well back?
BTW for the Summit and the 2 other associated supercomputers Nvidia will be providing over 40,000 'V100', so that is a significant number of flagship dGPUs just for 3 projects.
Thanks

My guess is that the 1080Ti will be released this summer, that would mark exactly 2 years since the release of the 980Ti. The 980Ti buyers are probably wanting to buy an upgrade (like me) and 2 years between like card releases sounds about right.

As a 980 Ti owner I think I will keep my card for this year rather than upgrade because I am still happy with its performance in 1440p. With no good 4K monitors coming out until late this year or early next year I just don't see a good reason to upgrade.

I don't believe it's a coincidence that both the 780 Ti and 980 Ti came out within spitting distance of their AMD counterparts 290X / Fury X. The timeframe is already longer than the original Titan X -> 980 Ti which was 3 months, I think we just hit 6 months since the Titan XP.

If they're worried about the 1080 Ti eating into Titan XP sales, then they won't release it.
Well, you would know better than I would.

How would it be eating Titan XP sales when the XP is double the cost of the 1080? They could simply release the Ti for $850 and it fits perfectly in the middle price point. I would certainly never pick up the XP at those prices so they're missing a segment of the market that feel the same as me.

Oh great, let's wait until June for a card with Titan XP-like performance. Oh wait, I'm enjoying Titan XP performance right now :D

Well if the news is not based upon fake data more indicators 1080ti is coming soon:

Look down at Ultra requirements:

Yeah no mention of 1080 and only 1080ti for ultra, kinda silly so fingers crossed more info comes out on the packaging just to validate this news but then they would name the highest GPU they know for Ultra setting and possibly 4k.
Cheers

That looks fake. No way specs call for a 1080ti or a fury. If it works on a fury no way it takes a ti

Well it would be the equivalent AMD card in terms of the fastest Card they have currently.
So it could make sense.

Yep that is what I am thinking.
But would be nice for more info from other sources to come out.

if the 1080ti is faster then the Titan X then Nvidia will have to release a newer Titan

What if they just release another Titan X for $1,500 using GP100, and that's all they do? o_O

That would be slower than a double-cut GP102...

And count me among those looking at my 2xGTX970's and getting ready for an upgrade this year. And if I'd known Nvidia was going to start producing Gx102 parts that were full-size gaming-focused GPUs, I'd have waited for the GTX980Ti...

Hope the price is right - I'd like to replace my 980ti. And yes, a Titan xp would have been a replacent but the price is ludicrous. Hopefully performance/price of the 1080ti vs titan xp will be the same as 980ti vs titan x was.

We'll see if that's real or not. My copy of the physical Ultimate Edition should arrive from the UK this or next week.

Some people on Reddit suggested that it's a misprint and meant to print 980Ti

Would be wierd considering they use the 1060 as the minimum and there still is the GTX1080, which is faster than the Fury X.
I think only options are either real and not a typo or someone done a great bit of timing with a fake.
Cheers
