There seems to be a lot of commotion whenever a company reveals that their latest smartphone is waterproof—am I the only one who doesn't get their phone wet? From an engineering standpoint, it’s impressive, but how many of you guys are regularly dropping your phones in swimming pools or operating them around water?

Kyocera announced the Rafre, its second take on a soap-proof, washable handset. The first DIGNO Rafre washable smartphone was launched back in December 2015 with mid-range specs. The second one doesn't stand out through specs either, but it's its other unusual features that makes this smartphone unique. According to Kyocera, the Rafre is washable with foaming soap and can be used even when it's wet (touchscreen included). It's also resistant to hot water, so it doesn't matter if you drop it when your bathtub. Oddly enough, the phone pre-loaded with a cooking app that can be operated with hand gestures, so you don't have to touch the display while actually cooking.

Me personally, I love the waterproof phones. Left my old waterproof phone one time accidently in the bottom of the hot tub overnight and it still worked like a champ. Killed one that wasn't waterproof once that was I'm my swim trunks when I jumped in the pool....

I like waterproof phones if they aren't using it as justification for shitty design features. Beyond that I've only ever once dropped my phone in water and that was in a flood. I powered it off instantly, disassembled when I got home, bag of rice etc etc np. I really don't have any sympathy for people who drop their phones into toilets and pools, I mean honestly why is your phone ever near either of those?

I use mine in the pool and hot tub all the time. I use it to play my music with to my Bluetooth speaker.

Kyocera seems to be making some pretty nice phones with some awesome photography tech. I just might grab one here soon as my current phone is on it's last legs. Kyocera has some good prices also.

Watching porn on this phone will be great, you can rub your dong on it for the money shots and then just wash it in the sink afterwards, no more Saran Wraps hahahaha

If I still lived in Florida I'd definitely look into waterproof phones. Those deluges can be like you're standing in a waterfall at times.

I've killed 2 phones while fishing. That was one of the reasons I went with a moto G3 - the waterproofing.

have done same, dropped one phone in a live well dead instantly, another got drenched while it was raining since i forgot i put it on top of my tackle bag.. then the last one fell out of my jacket pocket while i was stream fishing and climbing over some rocks.

i also have a flip phone sitting on the bottom of lake camanche in california which has been there for the last 12 years. :p

Do they make a chainsaw resistant phone yet?

I've had a bit of a run of bad... Luck...

I might handle my phone then eat food so I wash the oils and dirt off my phone in the sink on a regular basis so that when I am touching it, it is mostly clean. I use normal body soap or fluoride based mouth wash if it is really grimy like say if I had to answer my phone while eating a cheese steak and did not get all the grease off. But I use a normal S5 Active. I keep looking at the S7 but I have no upgraded yet. So my guess is most people should think about what they touch before and after there phone and if it is water proof considering washing it at least once a month...

I use mine near the shower for music or when I'm sitting on the can. I also use it when I'm working on my car with oil/brake dust/etc on my hands and I get it on my phone. So it's nice to have waterproofing for protection or just being able to wash my phone. My Surface Pro 3 has oil stains on the keyboard, since the thing is a weird cloth and I can't wash it off or wipe it down.

Canoe trip. Fell into the bottom of the canoe. Used mine to take a few underwater shots. My friends never left his waterproof pouch.

Also, we have a swimming pool and I can't tell you how many cell phones have died in it.

For me waterproof is a minimum requirement. "Waterproof" typically requires the water's surface tension to be intact to keep the water out. I had a "waterproof" wristwatch fail after trying to clean it with dishwater.
These Kyocera phones go one step further and are "washable", meaning it's okay to use detergents that remove the surface tension!

It's been mentioned here, but I'll reiterate:
Fishing, kayaking, canoeing, camping, existing in Florida, walking near pools. If you do any of these things, a waterproof phone is extremely handy.

About 10 years ago, I met a girl who talked on the phone while washing dishes. Of course, she dropped it in the full sink. So she bent over close to the water & shouted to her friend, "Quick! Hang up before you're electrocuted!"

Were they blondes?

All the bathroom talker rejoice! At least if you drop it in the toilet not everything is lost, you can just wash one and it's like nothing happened! ;)

As an avid motorcyclist, waterproof phones are great. Sometimes the heavens open quite suddenly and you find yourself soaked by the time you pull over to get the rain gear on.
