Dell Optiplex 790 MT - Ebay

Just ordered on with the 790 MT i5-2400, 8GB, 320GB HDD and a Zotac mini GTX 1050Ti. The PC should arrive sometime next week or early the week after, 1050Ti and wireless adapter should be here next week. I'll let you guys know how it works out, the PSU should be able to handle it. Thanks OP and swetmore for the links!

Should be a good little casual gaming and school type work PC. After I finish with school I'll just save it as a backup PC and maybe throw in an SSD!

Dell Optiplex Mini towers typically have 2 tool less hard drive bays, requiring Caddies, but they are cheap and easy to get.. They still have 1 3.5" drive bay that will fit a hard drive, and if you want another. The extra 5.25" bay can be used with adapter brackets, as long as the adapter brackets fit like an optical drive. Some will only line up right if the brackets are installed backwards, which normally pushes the drive one way or another so it may or may not work.

Damn those are some good deals with the i7 2600. You can't really lose either way with these though, as long as you have the right expectations :)

Just scooped this one up for $136 I've been watching that link all week and this is the best deal I've seen so far I think.

i7-2600 3.4GHz 8GB 320 GB AMD Radeon HD 6350 DVD-RW

I just found another good one:

Quick! some of those Optiplexes from the same seller are $116. There are a number of them with i7-2600 and 8GB of RAM. I was literally just looking at desktops from that seller that were showing up at $156, but when I went to the actual item, they dropped to $116. When I refreshed the search results, they all dropped to $116. There are also some i5-3570 configs too.

Yea, I'm in hopes to pick up an i7-3770 SFF with 8GB of RAM. No one bid on that one!

Then a 1/2 height card and I've got all I need for low-budget 1080p gaming. Considering the most powerful card in the house right now is a 6950/70, even a 1050Ti is looking pretty fast.

I still want a 1070 though for the main rig. Never know when VR is going to come my way.

Just something to keep in mind, but there are/were some of the SFF models that the only PCIe x16 slot is directly next to PSU, so those low profile GTX 1050 Ti models won't actually fit.

Thanks for the heads up.

Looks like here (page 33 http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_optiplex_desktop/optiplex-7010_owner's manual2_en-us.pdf) if I use the top PCI-e slot, it'll fit. Tight, but a fit. Good thing it doesn't have much wattage to throw around.

Upon a little further investigation, it looks like perhaps the 1155 socket SFF Optiplexes (390/790/990/3010/7010/9010) have the proper PCIe x16 slot spacing to use the dual slot low profile graphics cards. Newer models (3020/7020/9020/3040/5040/7040) have it right next to where the PSU goes, making them probably incompatible.

I don't know much about server processors but this seems tempting:

Also I kind of want to buy that desktop with the 16GB of ram for $116 and use some of the ram to put into some of the other machines that only have 4GB but have faster processors.
I personally wouldn't go back as far as the LGA 1366 socket Xeons (HP Z400/Z600/Z800 or Dell T3500/T5500/T7500). They have lots of cores, but the single core benchmarks are fairly low compared to the 1155 socket and newer i5s and i7s.

Mine just arrived. One thing I didn't think of for some reason was that 8gb of ram means 4x2gb instead of 2x4gb heh. Gotta run 12gb for now I guess. Also, make sure you open it up and get rid of some of the dust. I had a huge ball of dust just hanging out near the GPU. I'll be looking for an SSD next, the HDD is OK but it sucks when you're used to SSD's :)

Sweet I can't wait for mine to get here. I was seriously considering buying some of these and trying to resell them for like 300 as complete computers with monitors and everything. I live in a rural area so not many places around to buy computers I think it could be a viable business. This first one is going to my parents to replace their aging computer. I tried to order a second but was out of money noo. I think I probably will order a second one and see if I can sell it for more.

Another option to look at are the HP Z220 Desktop computers. Seem like a better case layout for larger graphics cards, and 3 HDD slots. HERES a 3rd gen i5-3570 with 4gb of RAM for $140. Worth searching for some cheap ivy bridge i7's.

Looks like you can put a standard PSU in as well. Not bad.

Wouldn't a molex to PCIE 6pin power handle it? I mean, if it's within wattage/amperage/voltage on whatever rail it's using, why wouldn't it work?

Unless you need a lot of cores for rendering or running VMs and maybe a lot of RAM (I didn't check what the max capacity of this tower) then you should avoid this. It's a 1366 socket, a generation before Sandy Bridge (i5-2500 etc). This is not a good use of your money if you want to game.
I have two Z800s equipped with 2x X5675s that tear through Handbrake jobs :)
Single-core IPC is more than enough for "normal" use as well (though certainly not as my main rig).

Sure, like I said, unless you need a lot of cores for rendering or VM's...

I wouldn't still wouldn't recommend anything older than SB unless you're getting some dual-socket box and need a lot of cores and RAM on a budget that won't fit around a 2011 socket.

yeah, but it's so cool when you go into task manager with HT enabled, and it shows 12 cores.. A 1366 X5670 as far as I'm concerned is as fast as an I5 3470 in practical gaming sense, it's slightly lower single core performance but marginally faster multi core performance.. The good thing with it is that the HP Z600/800 and Dell Tx500 precision series have power supplies that can handle higher end graphics cards.. That's not saying the Optiplex isn't a good deal but it will take more being put into it and careful planning if gaming is on the horizon.. The I5 3470 is the recommended processor for GTA V so it makes a good baseline for a gaming box

Its not a standard atx psu in the hp z220 so I would make sure whatever gpu you get will work with the stock power supply.

From HP "PSU in your Z220 is a HP proprietary design and does not conform to ATX standards. This means you can not use an off the shelf ATX power supply and plug it in without damaging your motherboard," you are correct.

Haters gonna hate :p
