With Samsung having officially disclosed the reason for their Note 7 fiasco this week, I suppose it is time to move on to the next big topic surrounding the company, which is probably the Galaxy S8. The Guardian managed to score some exclusive info on their next phone, which basically confirms a nearly bezel-less screen. I see that marketing had some fun with this one, coining the “Infinity” and “Dream” monikers. Unfortunately, rumors suggest that Samsung is only releasing a curved-edged version, which is a “feature” that I really loathe, as it arguably introduces distortion. Maybe Google and HTC will cook up a Nexus this year that is comparable in style and performance…

The two smartphones are codenamed Dream and Dream 2, representing the smaller and larger Galaxy S8 respectively, according to two sources. Both versions will have screens that curve down at the left and right sides of the device similar to the Galaxy S7 Edge, two sources have said. The so-called “infinity display” will cover the majority of the front of the device, with very little body on the top and bottom of the screen not dedicated to the display. Two sources said there wasn’t even room to put a logo or brand name on the front of the device. Samsung has moved the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device, multiple sources said. The Galaxy S8 will have a traditional 3.5mm headphone socket, according to several sources.

Probably got that name from Verizon's "Unlimited" data plan marketing department. Not actually "Infinity", but we'll call it that instead of telling you the actual finite resolution and screen size. :D

On the one hand, I love big screens, but on the other hand unlocking it with your thumb is now going to require you to flip the phone over which is inconvenient.

The edge is only curled on, well, the edges. Thus, there's no distortion on the part of the screen that would be flat on a traditional edged screen. IMO the Edge is way classier than the plain one, if you give it a chance.

Ugh, loved my S7 Edge until I realized how easily the curved screen cracks. Also just holding it around the sides can sometimes trigger a screen touch.

I could definitely do without the curved screen, but if they at least fixed how easily it cracks that would make it much more bearable.

I had the same issue until I got an edge specific case. It protects the fragile glass without killing the curved look.

I've ALWAYS had a rubber case around mine and it still has already cracked twice. Is yours one of those extra hefty ones that is fat all around and covers the front too or something?

Thankfully it's a company phone, so I can just get a new one in 12 months or so anyhow with renewal.

Call me when they drop TouchWiz or at least offer the option for users to. Samsung always has excellent hardware that is crippled by that bloated nonsense.

I loathed my S7E's curved screen, so will be looking elsewhere for a phone to entice me back to Android.

Have you used a S7? Reviewers compared its efficiency to stock Android devices and found there was no performance penalty for the skin, and it offers some attractive UI features. If you just like the look of stock though, check out Good Lock.
Why would you use your thumbprint on a device with a rear scanner? That's absurd.
Uhhh yeah, that was the point. It sucks.

If you're one of many users that finds it far faster to just pick up the phone and unlock it all with just one hand virtually instantly, you can't do that anymore.

With my S6 edge, I take it out of my pocket with my right hand, my thumb goes diagonally over the thumb print scanner/home button which is how I let it learn, and voila its unlocked. Far faster than typing in a code with my thumb. Can't do that with the rear scanner, which is a downside.

I'm pretty sure what he's getting at is you should use whatever finger happens to fall naturally near the scanner instead of your thumb. There's nothing magical about your thumbprint, you just need a print from any finger.

What's magical about the thumb is that its "free floating", since your phone is held up by your fingers pressing against your palm, leaving your thumb available to rotate around for turning on/off, unlocking, home screen, texting and navigating. Plus, you can use hand-eye coordination since you can see your thumb, but not a finger on the back.

The only finger I have available might be a pointer finger on the back, going just by feel, but that's pretty awkward.

However, I was just thinking perhaps the on-off button itself on the right side of the device could be the finger-print reader. Cases would just have to leave that area open.

Fuck Samsung for hoarding all the 835 SoCs. No other 835 device will be out until Summer.

Seems like such dirty pool after the Note 7 fiasco to just buy their way to continued dominance in the Android ecosystem.

Problem with Google phones is that they don't have wireless charging, which is essential once you try it.
I also hate the curved edge because it locks up the main screen via unintended finger grips of the phone. So you have to hold the phone carefully to make sure you're not causing sense on the edge.

Nope it's not, but I have not tested nor intend to on this case. I dropped one face down on concrete without a case, then had it replaced through insurance.

Seems like you haven't had a samsung phone in a long time, i went from 3 nexus phones to the s7 and i don't miss aosp at all, in fact i haven't even rooted it *gasp*

Infinity display? So does that mean the battery will simply become a black hole instead of bursting into flames?

I came from a 6p to an s7e and I prefer the scanner on the rear. So much so that I disabled the scanner on the s7e because it is such a hassle. With a rear scanner I can have a firm grip on the phone whIle scanning my index finger. With the s7e scanner I have to "smash grip" the phone while pulling it from my pocket to unlock it. The 6p also has a much faster and accurate scanner. I hope samsung improves the hardware.

If they have 1 front facing speaker, I might be interested in switching to it. Otherwise, I'll go back to an unbloated 6p with its dual front facing speakers and plain jane flat 1440p amoled display

I dislike the curved screens too. Although it was minimized on the Note 7, something they'll most likely continue to do.

I was really against getting my S7 Edge because of difficulties with rooting. However, they have come a long way with the functionality you used to need root for. I miss it sometimes but Samsung Pay is suprisingly awesome and works every single place I have tried with the exception of Gas Pumps, due to the recessed magnetic swiper.

I'm more interested in the Snapdragon 835 SoC rather than a curved display. Looking forward to the increased beastly performance it will offer. A bezzleless display would be great though.

I had a Galaxy S5 and my wife has an S7 right now. I hate the fact that there's a bunch of garbage on there (Jellybean-UI apps for mail, browser, text, etc.) that you can't get rid of and I hate the pulldown menu. That's disregarding that annoying lag with literally every single function.
After using a several phones with stock Android, I won't go back until they don't make stock phones anymore.

How many people have had problems with their palms accidentally activating edge-based commands when holding these types of phones?

I occasionally have this issue on conventional phones when trying to press something in the top left. The wrap-around screen thing is so tacky. What's the use of it?

I really don't have a problem with my S7 Edge screen. I did like my Note 7 better but whatever.

I love my S7E and I upgraded from a Nexus 6. I hated the curved screen too until I got a UAG case and I haven't had any issues since. As for TouchWiz its way better than it used to be for sure and I don't even miss AOSP either. I'll likely upgrade to the S8 too.

Im sure the s5's touchwiz is a bit dated, have you used the s7 much? I was pleasantly surprised how much function samsung added to android, google copied so many things into aosp from samsung they should almost get sued.

Will the case protect the phone if you have it in a front pocket and you say rest against a hard edge like a table?

when is a fully powered galaxy mini (~4.6in) phone coming out? And not that neutered Jet trash?

I agree. Looking to upgrade my Note 3 in the next few weeks. I was pretty pumped for that Note way back when I got it a few years ago, and aside from the screen, which I love, the thing has been a total disappointment. There's so much bloatware on it you'd never know it had top-end hardware at that time. I love the Galaxy line overall in concept, but I think it's time to try something else because I am tired of the added crap they put on it.

Problem is, I never see anything else that comes close to the display and hand feel. HTC was coming close for a while, but I am not aware of any good options from them at the moment.
