Microsoft Has Added Another Advertisement Inside Of Windows 10

That is not correct. for example

Windows 95 purchase a license
Windows 95 > 98 you purchased an upgrde license which voided your win 95 license
Windows 98 > ME purchase an upgrade lose win 98 license
Windows ME > XP purchase upgrade lose ME
Windows XP > Vista purchase upgrade lose XP
Windows Vist > Windows 7 purchase upgrade lose Vista
Windows 7 > Windows 8 purchase upgrade lose 7
Windows 8 > Windows 8.1 *basically a service pack)
Windows 7&8 > windows 10 no purchase required lose 7 or 8

Upgrading from one release to the next the license was transferred to the new release, thus voiding the previous. The only way this was not the case is if you bought a FULL release license not an upgrade license. The people that took the free win 10 upgrade recieved a free upgrade license.
That doesnt make the Win7/8 to Win 10 upgrade free though.
There is a loss of use of the better OS.

i never paid a dime for win 10 ..and yes i still have a image of my WIn 7 install to boot to ..not that i ever have needed it yet other then yea check it still works ..ms updates disabled

Upgraded laptop from win 8.1 \ to 10 home \ still have the original ssd to pop back in (in case i have a problem ..none so far )
Upgraded desktop from 7 ultimate to windows 10 Pro

never saw one supposed Microsoft ad ..but i do always disable that stupid X BOX app .. when i install Win 10

I have the advertisement / recommended software popup stuff all turned off. Too annoying.

i remember asking my IT guy to get me a copy of WIN 95A .. he told me why? OS 2 warp will be the future ...he ended up stealing my WIN 95 cd to use for customer installs

Our lecturer at uni refused to install any form of Windows on the PC's in the lab in the day, saying that Windows will go nowhere. All we had was DOS and a nasty old COBOL compiler.

Well, TBH, with Windows 10 being basically free, I don't mind SOME annoyances, but I do have a breaking point.

Nothing wrong with Windows 7.

Thats funny I remember paying for my copy of Windows 8... before they force upgraded me to 10 without asking...

Microsoft can go fuk themselves with a cactus. Ill stick to OSX from now on. Someone needs to sue the crap out of them and bring them back to earth.

I just want id Software to start releasing Linux clients again. Fuck these Bethesda assholes and their RPG ways. Also Blizzard.

Their games are the only reason my gaming machine is still running Windows.

It's Adobe for me. I can live without a number of the Windows exclusive games I play as a good chunk of the others I still play also have Linux ports... and nearly all the best free software on Windows is also available for Linux (Handbrake, VLC, etc...) so switching over would be a minimal adjustment.

If only Adobe would just get their shit ported over so production houses can feel comfortable moving away from both Windows AND MacOSX... that would be REALLY nice.

You're going to be counting a long time. The USA doesn't like to enforce laws on big corporations much anymore.

Plenty wrong with it. I hate how this forum mythologizes Windows 7.
I don't know about wrong with it, but it's going to slowly get left behind, that's just the nature of old OS's. I'm on a 1440p monitor and I wouldn't want to go to 4k on Windows 7. Although ironically, I don't think I'd want to go to 4k on Windows 10 for that matter either. I think it's kind of insane that scaling of applications is still an issue on Windows. While Linux has its own issues, this is one issue that had solved a WHILE ago.

Damn, do you have this on a script that runs every time a Windows 10 thread shows up? LOL :D It is exactly the same, word for word almost every time. Personally, I think the Mint interface is terrible but that is because you have to hunt things down just to find what you are looking for.

Damn it I thought I was psychic, or a time traveller, or a timetravelling psychic.

Apparently Newegg, Amazon, etc didn't get the memo since Home is $99 and Pro $199

The reality is its still a paid retail OS, and slowly trying to creep ads in is scummy no matter how you slice it. If they want to make a true free, ad-sponsored version, fine. But at least leave that bullshit out of Pro.

And now, while uptake of 10 is stalled at 24.5%, and 50% of the market is holding steady with 7 since they see nothing compelling or exciting in 10, now is not the time to introduce more OS level advertising.

Now is not the time for MS to be even more polarizing.
I acquired an OS-less system recently. I can attest that I did have to buy a commercial copy of Win10 from MicroCenter. It was certainly not free.

This makes me glad that I use Linux Mint as my primary OS.

I only boot into Windows for games these days.

Also makes me wonder, what is their incentive to want to drive people towards adopting Edge? It's not as if it is a paid product.

Do they get better advertising data that way?

Well, instead of making pissy posts, why not make one explaining WHAT is wrong with it. You know, be productive.

I have, on multiple occasions. Many Windows 7 critcisms also apply to Windows 10, like a UI that is still rooted in Windows XP, the continued use of Win32, etc. Under the hood, Win7's SSD management is inferior and undesirable relative to contemporary options, it lacks DX12, it's less secure than newer OSes, etc. Most of the reasons why this forum loathes Win10, like telemetry, have already been backported to 7, meaning that staying on 7 has little purpose outside of the enterprise.

I can keep going here, but I won't, because no one ever gets convinced by these threads.

I'm not having too many issues with Windows 10 on high DPI screens. Newer applications generally work fine with high DPI screens but here are exceptions, like the Steam client.

I had to respond to this part. If you're vigilant about which updates you accept, you DON'T get the telemetry added in retroactively. Not having that option is at the core of why there are so many Windows 10 holdouts.

Except the average user has no idea about the update that adds that. They just read about people crapping on W10 so stay with W7 and end up with that update anyways with no clue.

The telemetry updates for 7 and 8.1 were originally optional KBs. I believe they have since been pushed out as default updates.

The Windows 10 holdouts conflate telemetry with spying and are generally uninformed about the difference between the two. Windows has been sending telemetry since XP: they're called crash reports.

I have some old parts in a franken Haswell build which is running on Linux at the moment. Thinking of dual booting here. Where can I get this FREE WINDOWS 10 I hear about in EVERY Windows 10 thread? Do I walk into Office Depot and just grab the box off the shelf and leave?

The average user isn't complaining about Windows 10 because of telemetry or spying, they're probably not even aware it's doing that. If the AVERAGE user is switching back to 7, it's almost certainly because something they use doesn't work properly on 10 (or 10 itself gave them problems). Honestly, it's to be expected given how they laid off a lot of their testing department. Average people get hit with updates that in the past would have been a beta, got screwed and uninstalled, then MS got the feedback from them unwittingly beta testing for them, patched it, then future people come in and act like there was never any problem to begin with. Rinse and repeat.

If you're someone who monitors your updates enough to evade the telemetry ones, you can evade this too. I only sideload updates through an offline uninstaller, I've never done it automatically. I got to avoid the entire "upgrade to Windows 10" fiasco simply because I never installed those updates. As for mixing up telemetry and spying, I'm sure some of them do, although turning off crash report telemetry was a relatively easy process as far back as XP. Like many others have stated, the lack of being able to turn anything off rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Terpfen - Telemetry in Windows 10 is a massive departure from every other build of Windows to date. It is full blown NSA class spying! Windows 10 is preconfigured to grant itself Super User access to my PC, keylog every word I type, every website I visit, sell my "profile data" to companies, use my bandwidth to push content to other pc's, offer no choice in selectively patching the O.S., and scan / backup all my personal documents, emails, and content. Microsoft will share all of it "at their discretion" with the proper authorities?! Again, I stress this is a massive departure from privacy we have long took for granted and have had (up until Windows 10) from Microsoft O.S.'s for decades. You seriously need to read the Windows 10 Terms of Service and Privacy Statement to fully appreciate the spectrum and gravity of changes.

To get you started, here is a "word for word" excerpt from Windows 10 Privacy Statement (see below). Put bluntly, your data (ALL of it) is open to and being collected by Microsoft!

"Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement."

The only difference is who reads them.

Not even in the same ballpark.

Well, TBH, with Windows 10 being basically free.
So, when you write 'Basically free', you mean it isn't free. Just so we get things clear.
I never thought these words would come out of my fingers, "But I am willing to pay a fee to use Windows". In return i would expect security updates that don't bork my system, reset my settings or serve me adds.
Instead, you'll get both. A fee to use windows, AND all the annoying things, too....because it's not a bug, it's a feature! It's all for your own good, you see. Just let mamma microsoft take care of everything, and ignore the man behind the curtain. Oh, and that fee? It will escalate just like cable TV fees, and taxes did. Just a few pennies increase at a time, then eventually half your paycheck is gone. Oh, forgot. It's like that now.

M$ already has the U.S. gov't's number. They got away with the previous antitrust suit with no problem at all.
ANow is not the time for MS to be even more polarizing.
As we have recently seen, if you tell the same lie enough, eventually people believe it. So, they don't care. They are microsoft. Resistance is futile. You WILL be assimilated. It's just a matter of time. All they have to do is carefully cripple Win 7.

Not even in the same ballpark.

Wrong. It's the same thing: it's the sending of specific data used to diagnose and prevent system issues reported to Microsoft.

One reason why Win10 is stable is because of its incorporation of Win7 era telemetry data.

Yes, 24/7 almost impossible to opt out sending of telemetry and personal data equals once in a crash, one easy option opt out, report.

Terpfen - Your free to ignore answering my post directed specifically at you (see post #64), but continuing to spout off nonsense like Microsoft only uses Telemetry "to diagnose and prevent system issues" is wrong and misleading. Telemetry "use" to work the way you describe it, Windows 10 has vastly expanded the breath and scope of Telemetry, what it is used for, and whom has access to the data collected.

I don't get any of this crap. I don't get ads or pop ups from MS. I use Google services a lot but I get no messaging, suggestions or ads from them. Nothing. What on earth are people doing to get this stuff?
Probably a Microsoft Account. If you set it up as a domain machine with a local login, I bet that's why you don't get anything. Could also be regular vs pro version difference.
