Old seagate barracudas making siren like noises

I've put together the new system recently and salvaged my 2 old drives. ST3320620AS Barracuda 7200.10 if I remember correctly. Maybe they made such noises before but I couldn't hear it in the chassis. They make a siren like squeaks (not like those loud siren ones you can usually read about). I can barely hear them in silence. It's hhh h hhh h hhh h. They bother me a lot.

Should I be concerned about the drives? They're 11 years old by now

It says they're healthy

What's the run time? Likely just aging bearings.

You mean power on hours? Over 49 000 hours

Some of those old .10's had a whine to them even when relatively new. There was a firmware update to .AAE which helped with the acoustic profiles on some of the .10's. I believe you can find it here. It is also possible they are just old and the bearings are old/loud &/or failing.

I have an old Toshiba built ( I think ) white label 320GB that sounds kind of like a siren. when it spins up, but it's been like that since new and it has a lot of hours on it. It's an IDE HD, in a USB 1.1 enclosure.

Thanks for the answers, guys. I think I've figured it out. It just hit me. I had no HDD noise or anything like that on my old machine that used the drives and GS700 power supply. My GS700 power supply by Corsair also makes a buzzing noise now in the new system. Never did on the old machine. I think the culprit is the power supply. I headed over to Corsair forum. The only useful tip I found was to disable power saving in BIOS. I don't have it though. So I guess I should try another power supply. GS series is apparently crap. Never liked Corsair tacky quality.

Is this a constant whine or squeek? I have had both but the squeek is troubling since it happens anytme at all but the drive has worked for a decade. Not seen that in any other drive. But the whine is the motor? It is really annoying and since there is no way to access it not possible to oil the sealed bearings. I know some drives have this motor running sound which is loud but the whine is really gratting my teeth and I dont use such drives.

Didn't you hear about NSA firmware malware? It was designed to make harddrives do this whining to notify everyone that you have "illegal" material the government says you can't have for arbitrary totalitarian reasons. You need to nuke that fucker fast! It is also self replicating and can affect other drives so make sure you disconnect it now and nuke it to kill the malware and keep the NSA from infecting everyone else and knocking at your door at 3 am killing your dogs and you due to the FYTW clause that is in invisible ink in the Constitution under the Commerce Clause.

Is this a joke? I know they played with adding in code to execute hooks to install software that can monitor your system and they have this even in CPU's now. In fact this is not very hard to do at all.. The company found out one of the employees added such code and removed it. No connection was found to the NSA but who else would have done it? Intel wants to add code including security and threat level detection inside the CPU. Supposedly for motor vehicles but the same can be done to regular cpu's as well. What would be the difference between adding antivirus like software and the monitoring it, and just get rid of the anti part of it..

The CPU thing you are thinking of RDRand where NSA got intel to weaken the random number generator IIRC correctly.

if thats not the CPU thing that NSA influenced Intel on and there is another PM me a link on details because i have never heard of it.

This firmware malware thing is ridiculous. OPs case i doubt has anything to do with it. I was just making some fun

I thought that was Microsoft.. Who before had the key inside as well.. But this is not encryption but actual code. That can download modules via the internet even if you have no OS installed. And I knew of the drive thing as I have done it for specific embedded systems and that someone was doing it on a mass market level was troubling.. And no links We talk about trends and come up with ideas but I am no longer active in the group. I get worried knowing the capabilities of some of these people and having their code running rampant on things where my life and safety are involved. Kind of like driving on 3 wheels.. You never know when another wheel might fall off.. Yea some of these guys are that good.. Russian hackers my $#$..

Oh yea when they say you have to be very good and have insider knowledge to do this they are not kidding. It took me over an year to learn a simple system but these are exponentially more complex systems. Of course if you dont care about the wheels flying off, it is far easier..
