Six years ago, Apple sued Samsung because they dared to make a phone with rounded edges and colorful icons. The fruit company never got their $399 million in damages, but they are still fighting to decide how much they are rightfully owed.

The court will seek to determine the exact amount Samsung owes Apple for infringing upon the iPhone's patented design, including its rectangular front face with rounded edges and grid of colorful icons on a black screen. The previous $399 million damages judgment was overturned by the Supreme Court last month. Apple's damages were calculated based on Samsung's entire profit from the sale of its infringing Galaxy smartphones, but the Supreme Court ruled it did not have enough info to say whether the amount should be based on the total device, or rather individual components such as the front bezel or the screen.

Don't get me wrong, it is a complete ripoff for the most part. But the fact that you can patent such a stupid thing is ridiculous. Rounded corners? Colorful icons on a black screen? The fu..

If Samsung loses, then the company that made this cake should be sued too just to prove how absurd the patent system has become.

wait a minute wasn't the steve jobs patent invalidated by the patent office?

isn't this lawsuit negated by that?

Apple lost a number of patents in Germany due to their shenanigans... You'd think they'd even be humbled a little bit after it became clear that Apple stole as much as they sued others for 'stealing', but nope....

I could show similar images of cars. Or any other user commodity subject to market forces. I'm surprised that Apple has not been sued for using buttons. You know, someone invented the button. Then Apple stole the idea and put it on the front of their iPhone.

We need someone to sue apple for stealing their idea of stealing ideas from another and then suing someone else that did the same to profit further (in this case, the iphone's corners form Nokia and the central button again from Nokia). Based on the US court's logic, that'd be a legit lawsuit and legit lulz.

"grid of icons on black.pcx background"

but on a cell phone!

You lot make me laugh...

The general argument is that it is more of an indirect attack on Google for stealing iOS and the smart phone concept while Eric Schmidt was privy to development at Apple in 2006-2007. Since Samsung is Googles most prominent customer of the Android platform, they go after Samsung. They can't go after Google directly.
