rockstar hasn't liked Nintendo ever since they screwed them hard back in the N64 days....before they were actually rockstar.

That's funny, I don't remember them releasing full specs yet... Not saying it won't be slow, but really, nobody knows what it can do yet.

Its based off the current(last) gen Nvidia chip the Tegra X1 SoC, and we already know how that performs, and its downclocked from its default specs...so we pretty much know at this point.

here's borderlands 2 running on an Nvidia Shield TV:

Nobody knows if those are final, and they weren't released by Nintendo. That's happening later in the month. I don't doubt they're correct, but I'm not 100% confident in them either. Anyway, I've got a Shield TV, and am actually fairly impressed by it. I'm also not someone who needs, or even cares that much how powerful a Nintendo system is, as long as it's powerful enough to play the games for it well enough. More power is obviously better, but it's not the only factor in the equation.

Anyway, I'm more curious to see what Nintendo actually says, rather than "theoretical maximums". (not that they're probably all that far off)

Has Nintendo ever once surprised anybody with computational horsepower?

It's statistically appropriate to consider those fairly accurate, and the come from a decent source.

The new Nvidia Shield is $199, and the Switch uses the older Tegra X1 processor. Dunno what the specs are on the new Shield, but if they can do it for $199 the Switch should be cheaper, no?

According to the Newegg page for it (which may or may not be accurate) the new Shield is using the X1 still.

New Shield
X1 with a 256-core GPU
3GB of RAM (no mention of type or speed)
2x USB 3 (A and not C)
HDMI 2.0
16GB of storage
Bluetooth 4.1/BLE
AC wifi at 2.4 and 5GHz

There is also the $300 Shield Pro which swaps the 16GB hard drive out for a 500GB one. Otherwise specs are the same.

Given that the Switch has more storage than the base Shield, more RAM than either version, a touch screen, motion controls, a built in battery, USB C, and is designed both both home use and portable use I'd say a base price of $250 seems fair even with the underclocked CPU and GPU. Though that really depends on battery life and how the thing actually performs.

Here is the Newegg page for the Shield Pro since it's the tab I currently have open: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...PID=1796839&SID=wtbs_586e68d778af306da0c8cb3e

I guess I don't need to worry about picking up a new Shield TV then. I really like the current one as it is. The main problem is that everywhere is out of the controllers for it. I wanted to pick up a second one, and they're selling for $100 everywhere since there's no stock. Would have been cool to get something Pascal based though. (on the Switch too) That said, I think it will do just fine.

Nintendo wants to make a profit on the HW, so no. Probably $299.

Everything so far points to $249. UK leak, Canadian leak, etc.

Welp, the reveal presentation is happening tonight. I guess we'll at least know where things stand very soon.

Soo...they took everything gimmicky about all the other Nintendo consoles and put them into one console.

The capability of those tiny controllers is kind of impressive but...this is just coming off as more gimmicks to me.

Also, $299 price and paid online service? Meh.

Low number of available launch units will drive people into a frenzy. It will be popular no matter what. At least until the summer.

I wonder if these games they are showing are going to be released when the console comes out or later down the road. I'm not a fan of the paid online but I figured $300 would be what retail price would be. Graphics look pretty good and the games look fun so far.

About what I expected, except battery life is about 2 hours worse then I was expecting.

Hence the problem: 4 and a half hours isn't viable for a handheld (See: Game Gear), and price wise, it's competing against the PS4/XB1 as a home console. I simply don't see see how the Switch is viable at that price.

I bought the NES (or my mommy did.. dude I was um young)
Then ... then...
The DS-Lite wait what? yes thats right The next Nintendo Product I bought was the DS lite.
Then the Wii (hated the controls on most games. till they finally gave us real controllers)

I owned the Turbo Graphix 16, Genesis, Saturn, Playstation 1,2,3,4, Sears Intelevision, Atari 2600

The Genesis really took care of me till the Playstation. I owned the Saturn for 4 hours. It was 4 hours too long.

But Nintendo lost me for what? Decade or so? The Wii hurt more then helped. The Wii-U had NO chance at me with its price range and lack of games... its still near or above full price even when its discontinued? What were they thinking? Kids would allow the other child to use the fancy controller while they used crap and not fight over it?

So now the Switch? Can you get a few sets of controllers at reasonable prices that kids can play together and are responsive? Is it simple to use and setup new games? Maybe this will rock and roll like the good ole NES.

Time will tell.

Honestly, this just looks like more Nintendo crap. Gimmicky, overpriced hardware and lackluster software support. I predict this going the same way as every other Nintendo console... Excellent first party titles with non-existent third party support. Seriously, one of the heavier pushed games is a 5 year old game. Skyrim in great, but every fucking person on the planet who cares about Skyrim has played it at this point. Why bother?

I'm tired of having to buy a console just to play Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. I won't be getting this, and honestly, I seriously hope it flops. Every hardware failure gets us one step closer to Nintendo going the way of Sega and bringing their first party library to real consoles.

Jesus fucking Christ. That was a trainwreck. What the fuck Nintendo!? So mentioned two launch games and one is some casual horseshit that proves Nintendo learned fucking NOTHING from the Wii U.

Watched entire presentation live.

This went from a Day 1 preorder for me to maybe ask for it for Christmas.

I really hope tomorrow's Treehouse stream actually talks about the freaking launch titles. Two months away and they've only revealed two launch titles, dear god.

Yeah... they did absolutely nothing to absolve any of the complaints going in about:

I count four launch titles, 1-2 Switch, Zelda, Splatoon 2, and Arms (ok... two REAL launch titles). And here's about how I'd sum them up...

1-2 Switch - Who cares? Minigames that exist solely for the sake of having something to do. Nobody will give a shit, won't sell consoles.
Zelda - Will probably be an incredibly good game. If you already have a Wii U, your good. If you want to buy a console just to play this, Wii U will be a much cheaper option. While it's a system seller, only barely since it will likely be 100% identical on Wii U.
Splatoon 2 - Seriously, did anyone play Splatoon long term? I didn't like it. I can't imagine it has a real robust following. Definitely doesn't seem like a game worth buying a new console for.
Arms - Again, who cares? Like 1-2 Switch, looks gimmicky. It's something to buy for people who have a console collecting dust, but I don't see anyone getting excited for it, or spending a meaningful amount of time playing it. Won't sell consoles.

As for non-launch or not-yet confirmed titles...

I put my thoughts about Skyrim above. Waste of time. It's an excellent game, but it came out over 5 years ago. It's been dirt cheap on PC, it's been re-released on current consoles (and surely runs/looks better). If you haven't played it yet, you don't care to, and you sure as hell don't need this console to do it. This one still puzzles me. Even FO4 would have made more sense. FIFA, meh, good if this is your only console, but it likely won't be. Mario Kart looks like just a port / update. I guess thats OK if you skipped Wii U, but still not exciting or special to see an old game rehashed. Mario will be a big deal, but that is a long way away. A lot of what else that I saw seemed geared towards Japan. I don't know shit about them, maybe these are things that are highly anticipated and will bolster sales there?

I'm sure Nintendo will be business as usual with a limited launch to create artificial demand. But I just don't see it being popular long term. It's not powerful enough to be taken seriously as a home console. As a handheld, it will be pretty beefy, but those are two markets that really require segregation. We play different types of games on the go than we do on the couch. Again, going back to Skyrim. It's a fantastic game, but it's not even one I'd want to play on the go. I want to get immersed in Skyrim. I want to focus all my attention on it and get sucked into the world. I can't do that if half my attention is going towards making sure I don't miss my bus stop. Maybe I'm alone here, but I always felt handhels are a lot more casual. They need to be things easy to pick up, and equally easy to be interrupted. Traditional console games just aren't that. Developers have to try to create a game library that's fun to play in two very different settings... and that is going to be a significant challenge. Maybe games like Mario Kart and FIFA will work ok here since they aren't overly involved.

This really just seems like something trying to accomplish to much, and under performing in every aspect as a result. I don't see this doing much better than the Wii U.

ARMS is Spring and Splatoon 2 is Summer. 1-2-Switch and Zelda were the ONLY launch titles they announced. They should have announced the full launch lineup during that event. That was when the whole world was paying attention. The media is going to report on that mess, not whatever Treehouse does tomorrow.

WTF were they thinking with the pricing: http://www.nintendo.com/switch/buy-now/

$70 for the pro controller?
$80 for a pair of joy cons?
$50 for a single joy con?
$90 for an additional dock?

Yea...Nintendo screwed the pooch on this one. I thought it was expensive enough buying extra controllers for the Wii/Wii U...

So if I want to play a game with a couple of friends or my kids, I'm at $500 with taxes. I really wanted to like this but $500 for another gimmicky and under powered console.

My only hope is they have a shortage like always so I can pick a few up and make some quick cash like the rest of their consoles.

IGN is showing both as a March 3rd release. I wasn't paying enough attention to the stream to notice if the info there was contradictory to that. If neither of those are launch titles, this gets even sadder. I hope they have something really special to show tomorrow... but if they did, I really can't imagine why they wouldn't have shown it tonight.

IGN is full of morons. They specifically said Spring and Summer on the stream.

If it wasn't before 32gb internal storage and 6.2-inch 720p and only 3 hour battery life when playing zelda are confirmed on nintendo's website http://www.nintendo.com/switch/features/ .

For all the compromises that this console made to become portable that battery life sucks.

3 hours ideally. Battery life from companies is almost never accurate. I'd expect 2.5-2.8 hours max. That's about the battery life of the N3DSXL with 3D on....Which sucks.

I was honestly depressed during the presentation. The graphics were mediorce with aliasing everywhere. Looked no better than the Wii or WiiU. The games were a joke. 1-2-Switch is just sad and gimmicky. Arms is a lame boxing game. Zelda is on the WiiU at launch as well and should have been out for the WiiU a year ago if they weren't holding onto it for the Switch so they'd actually have something to release with it. Splatoon2 is DOA. Mario game might be ok, but it looks like the entire Mario team has been tripping on acid while designing it... those colors, man. The other trailers were of obviously unfinished, and not even close to being finished, games. The poor fools they brought on stage mostly just embarrassed themselves. Also, please allow me to not get excited about playing Skyrim again, at 30fps, if that, and 720p, if that.

And did I really need to see a close-up of Reggie, let alone the zoom in on his mouth. Holy shit.

Well I look at a couple of things from Nintendo's proceedings. First thing I want to touch on is battery life. Nintendo claimed it's actually 2.5-6 hours depending on what exactly you're playing. If you're playing some graphically intensive (Zelda, Skyrim, XenoBlade 2, Fire Emblem: Warriors are prime examples) it will be on the lesser side. If you're playing with a less graphic intense environment it will be more. Onto launch titles, remember that the "launch window" doesn't just include games just on Day 1. A usual launch window is anywhere from Day 1 to 6 months down the road. That being said, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2 Switch are from what we know right now the only things waiting for us at launch? On the one hand, yikes! On the other hand, Nintendo will probably give us more info on launch titles at their Nintendo Treehouse event tomorrow morning. Now if those 2 already mentioned titles are all they got that only tells me Nintendo is banking on Zelda tiding everyone over until more can arrive (much like with Twilight Princess when it was launched on the original Wii. Back then it was Zelda or what I like to call a perfect blend of fantasy and crap: FANTACRAP!). The strat worked alright for the Wii because they had Wii Sports to fall back on. They don't have that this time around. Also, if you're wondering all of you are free to use the word fantacrap in your daily lives...if you've never heard of the word before. That is all. Out!

Splatoon 2 will probably be good. The "first" game was great. But it should not have been sold as a sequel. It's the same game with extra stuff. They called the MK8 port Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, why not do the same with Splatoon? It's clearly a port of the Wii U with extra stuff. It even looks exactly the same as the Wii U version. Then there's the pay online bullshit. The company that has constantly been a decade behind everyone else with online wants people to pay for it now...What the hell are they thinking!? Iwata made some bad decisions at times, but holy crap it feels like Nintendo is falling apart without him.
