NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

You read wrong or they edited, they are calling it m-ATX, which is correct. It is clearly not an ITX board.

Also interesting to note, the ITX Strix has 2 m.2 slots, one on the back and the one on the front. The one on the front though is sitting right on top of the PCH. They claim the heatsink works for both the PCH and the m.2 but that it keeps the m.2 thermally isolated from the PCH. Not sure how exactly that would work, but I have a feeling that the drive might get pretty hot on the front.

If this is true, I may upgrade... 2x m.2 is what I've been waiting for. a Fast NVME like the Samsung as primary (256-512) and then a 1tb 600P intel as storage. No sata power/data cables would be AMAZING. I HATE sata cables and extra cables from PSU that I dont require... Means 8 pin, 24, and 1x pcie 8 pin for my 1070. So clean.

Starting to wish I had waited for Z270, love the carbon look. I could live without the RGB lighting though.
get some carbon stickers, same shit.

That would be really nice and Intel is the only one that has a M.2 1TB that is even close to reasonably priced.

It appears the case shipped on Dec. 16th but got stuck somewhere in between Taiwan and Poland and no one seems to no where... Hopefully I hear back from the Taiwanese forwarder soon...
Has something similar happened to anyone here? In the meantime I'm staring at the following components:
  • **CPU** | [Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor]
  • **CPU Cooler** | [Noctua NH-C14 CPU Cooler]
  • **Case Fan** | [Phanteks PH-F140HP 140mm Fan]
  • **Case Fan** | [EK Vandar F4-120ER 120mm Fan]
  • **Motherboard** | [Asus Z170I PRO GAMING Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard]
  • **Memory** | [CORSAIR VENGEANCE LPX 16GB DDR4 (2x 8GB)]
  • **Storage** | Samsung 960 EVO M.2. 1TB
  • **Video Card** | [EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 SC GAMING ACX 3.0]
  • **Power Supply** | [Corsair SF 600W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular SFX Power Supply]
I'm tempted to get the cheapest case I can find on www.x-com.pl and run the build in it until the NCASE arrives...
Do you think the Zalman ZM-T5 case would support the NH-C14 cooler? Worst case I can run without the side panel, right?

On a separate topic, I've seen a lot of recent dual 120 mm fan setups on the side bracket. Has anyone compared 140 mm + 120 mm combo vs. dual 120 mm?
The bracket covers a significant portion of the 140 mm fan. Does this mess with airflow or can you push more air more silently than with dual 120's?

Stll haven't heard anything about my case... the forwarder seems to have no clue... so in the meantime the temporary setup turned out awesome. I may need to get a refund on the NCASE if the forwarder truly lost it. xD

You can also try the Sandisk X400 M.2. I've got the 1TB as my primary - works great and even better price wise.

Hi Necere, the NZXT Hue+ is a 2.5" box with 23.5mm thickness. Do you think it could fit on the inner side of the front panel if the 3.5" HDD bracket is attached?

Edit: I did some measurements with my case and it seems as though it won't fit because the HDD's screws will protrude.

Lol, I was just looking at the hue today for ncase m1 fitment....

I think if you take it apart it might fit behind the front panel. Im ordering one next week, and can let you know where it can fit.

I'm sure the Hue+ will fit without a 3.5" HDD, but with a HDD in the way, most likely not. The Corsair HD120 RGB fans and controller are a safer bet in this case.

I have a radiator, so Im looking to either mount it under the gpu, or behind the front panel.

That's sata based though isn't it? NVME All the way! :p

Lol.... true true!

I'm no expert. This is my first SSD (shock gasp...) so this is still crazy fast for me. I actually can't recall - but I have a feeling the Z170i PG can't support NVME.
Might be useful to check that up first rfarmer

*edit - does anyone know how to link a user directly?

Link? Chapeau ? is that what you meant? @ and name (i actually linked a person with the name name... XD) .

Ya it supports nvme. I believe all Z170 with an M.2 do.

The Intel 600p doesn't really perform any better than a SATA drive though. http://www.anandtech.com/show/10850/the-intel-ssd-600p-512gb-review/10

Anandtech really did not like the 600p, it has huge caching problems. The only workloads it excels at are really light workloads, and for those light workloads a SATA drive works just fine and is cheaper.

A better NVMe SSD might be from MyDigitalSSD. I don't have the model name, but their new M.2 drives are starting to be reviewed and have performed better than the Intel 600p at about the same price.

Addendum: It's the BPX series of drives that feature the Phison E7 controller. I found a review from late October and another one from late November.

Shoot, it's only available up to 480 GB.

Eh. It'd be a storage drive for me anyway. And would have my steam games on it. That's about it. I'd have a Samsung Pro as Primary. XD

Yeah that is what I am doing. I have a 128GB M.2 SSD as my boot drive and a 960GB 2.5 SSD for games. Having the 2 M.2 slots would be sweet though.

Yeah, There's only around 18-19mm of clearance. It may fit if you removed the L-shaped 2.5" bracket and mounted the Hue+ directly to the chassis with double-sided tape, though.

Trying to find info on new Z270 mITX mobos or the upcoming build. The ASUS ROG STRIX Z270I Gaming looks interesting.

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-Strix-Z270I-Gaming/overview/

Anyone have info on other other Z270 mITX boards?

http://wccftech.com/intel-z270-h270-b250-motherboard-round-up/ Scroll down that page a ways, there is a line up of upcoming Z270 boards. Not really any prices or release info yet but should be soon.
EVGA got smart and are including M.2 and U.2 support on the Z270.

For us Aussies. the MSI looks nice. but I'd still pick the Asus. Asrock is standard of Asrock

Yes precisely, and the point of the review is that the 600p is not going to give you a benefit for that task over a MX300. So you should just save $100 and get a 1tb MX300 drive instead...

Seems like a pretty good spreadsheet making comparison of the known m-ITX boards very easy.

Personally I find only the Asus Strix to be interesting as it offers something unique from the existing Z170 boards in the dual m.2 slots.

Plan to move from μATX to mini-ITX this year, was waiting for new ROG IMPACT but looks like they moved both IMPACT and GENE from ROG line to Strix line now called Z70I (I for IMPACT) and Z270G (G for GENE)?

But whatever, it is early in the year, reviews will come in, and other mini-ITX will show up.

My question though is that I will be looking for the M1 in a few months and will be interested in a clear panel and I see they don't sell one ready to use. Is this planned for 2017? I mean why not? And if not, is there a video showing how to make one? Like everyone I guess I know how to using a Dremel but would like to see some useful tips.

There is always the lian li pc q10 which is very similar to the ncase m1 and has a glass panel + its cheaper.

Its a little bit taller and a little bit longer, but what most people dislike is that it is 6 cm wider..

Front is... ugly.

In addition to the Lian-li above, there is also the Cougar QBX, which is WAY cheaper and can be modded relatively easily to have a window.

These pics make me miss seeing proper M1 builds... I guess we're about due for another round soon right!

Looks like the same placement.

I think the Strix board looks amazing and I happily put it on my shortlist for my upcoming M1 build. I am a bit worried though about the heatsink height on the left side. I hope it allows use of the NH-C14 I already bought. What do you guys think?

I think the only issue would be possible problems mounting the bottom fan, if you aren't planning on using one looks like it should fit fine.

Just got my replacement CPU to join my replacement mobo from a couple of weeks ago. Benched it and was able to get to BIOS (fiiiiinally). Now I'm trying to put everything together.

How are people attaching fans like the NF-P14 (from my NH-C14), which do not have screw threads, to the side fan brackets? Just forcing in your own threads, or am I missing something basic?

The NF-P14 is a 140 mm circular fan with the mounting holes of 120 mm fan. It mounts easily onto the side bracket using standard fan mounting screws. These have coarse threads which cut into the plastic of the fan's mounting holes.

The ASUS Z270i is at the top of my motherboard list -- so far. It's still very early in Q1 rollouts and I'm still curious about ZEN and AM4 mITX.

I am waiting too. Hope they release a full line up of AM4 itx boards, with features similar to the 1151 Intel boards. The big question is AMD, I really hope they bring a competitive CPU to market. I am hoping for a 4 core, 8 thread with a base clock of 4.0 GHz and boost of 4.5 GHz. Something competitive with an i7. If they can bring one in at say $250 - $275 they will sell all they can make.

Yeah, I have my eyes peeled for those X300 parts (the AM4 Mini ITX parts). I'm excited to build that kind of a monster.
