Medium CEO Ev Williams announced today via this blog post that the company is laying off 50 people and closing down its DC and New York offices. Isn't this the same company that raised almost $140 million in funding earlier this year?

I’ll start with the hard part: As of today, we are reducing our team by about one third — eliminating 50 jobs, mostly in sales, support, and other business functions. We are also changing our business model to more directly drive the mission we set out on originally. Obviously, this is a tough thing to do, made tougher by the immense respect and love we have for these people who have helped make Medium what it is today.

Creatives are some of the worst at business and money management. Running my business, I quickly discovered my weak points.
Even though they're saying it's due to "lack of focus", it always comes down to mismanagement of resources.

Didn't even know what this was. Sounds like another failed solution to a question nobody is asking.

WTF is Medium again? I can't keep track of all these ill-advised perenially drain-swirling tech companies.

I need to open a medium business to be shored up with $140 million dollars and close it down.

Had to look this one up and still wtf is it. It's like a social media company where you do all that stuff other sites do. Whatever.

Well Steve, given that we are 4 days into the year I am going to guess no, they didn't raise money earlier this year. ;)

Add me to the list of not knowing anything about Medium. I googled "medium" and got a chuckle for the autocomplete for "medium length boobs" though.... What is medium again ;-p

From what I can tell Medium is a social media site where people that are so far up their own asses they can see daylight come to post things about their own lives that nobody else cares about. So, pretty much like every other social media site.

Jesus how did they raise so much? The only reason I even know their name is because of random headlines about some random self-important douchebag no one has ever heard of has posted some nonsense opinion piece and other random people's panties are twisted.

one word:

bubble.

I've read medium at times when I'm sick of sites that are heavily politically slanted & usually followed by horrible comments, memes & puns.

The main "innovative" thing I've seen there is the ability to add a comment & have a sidebar conversation from any location in the article.

ie: highlight a paragraph or sentence & then comment in the sidebar on that specific statement rather than your note just getting lost in the noise at the bottom...
