will kaby lake fit in current skylake boards?

gah... what's sad about this is you almost have to go with kaby lake for those DRM issues. for example netflix wont allow 4k streaming unless you have kaby lake+win10. and somehow... win7 wont run on that? weird

Windows 7 is a very old OS at this point. Manufacturers of hardware simply reach a point where they no longer develop and test drivers for older operating systems.

yeah its call progress. the 4k streaming thing will probably change as newer chips come out but right now only kaby has what it needs.

oh i dont mind all that... but it's also about CHOICE.

i mean who is intel to tell us that win7 cannot be installed on the kaby lake CPUs? imagine back when the core series came out and intel says, win 9x can no longer be installed on these CPUs.

i mean no one would want to anyway... but that choice should belong to consumers and processor mfr.

it their product they can make it how they want but that doesn't mean its the best idea. but there could also be issues that cause win7 not to work right on kaby, who knows...

I don't think its a Kaby Lake specific issue as much as the manufacturers or Intel deciding not to write and support drivers for the Z270 chipset and Windows 7. Again, this isn't new. I've seen this sort of thing many times in the last 20 years. Manufacturers call it quits when they have to support drivers for OSes that are three or four versions back.

Y'all realize MS had to release special updates to Win7 to support Skylake, right?

MS is now basically done with Win7. They want you running 10 now. They're not going to reverse engineer major updates to the OS without a damned good reason today.

i understand older hw and driver support. but cpu? afaik you install the min. req and it should work last i checked win min req hasnt changed too much after meetinf 1ghz.

are there examples of like pentium4 phased out? pretty sure u can still do that on w10

The way it works is that hardware requires drivers which will only go back so far to older OSes. With newer OSes, they tend to support the hardware that came before them provided that the hardware in question meets the necessary requirements to run the OS. This isn't particularly hard or complicated to understand. Windows 7 was succeeded by 8, 8.1 and now Windows 10. Microsoft and the hardware manufacturers have to draw a line somewhere. That's were they've chosen to draw their line in the sand. I don't particularly agree with it since Windows 8.x was shit but it is what it is.
