Malware code associated with “Grizzly Steppe,” a Russian hacking operation, was found at electric utility Burlington Electric, which serves nearly 20,000 customers in Vermont. The code was found on a laptop that was not connected to their grid systems.

Burlington Electric said in a statement that the company detected a malware code used in the Grizzly Steppe operation in a laptop that was not connected to the organization’s grid systems. The firm said it took immediate action to isolate the laptop and alert federal authorities. …Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) said he was briefed on the attempts to penetrate the electric grid by Vermont State Police on Friday evening. “This is beyond hackers having electronic joy rides — this is now about trying to access utilities to potentially manipulate the grid and shut it down in the middle of winter,” Leahy said in a statement. “That is a direct threat to Vermont and we do not take it lightly.”

All I keep hearing is hot air what are they going to really do about the russian and chinese hackers some of them state sponsored.

I guess they were right the next war will be fought over the internet not with tanks and bombs.

OMG! WE'RE ALL GOING TO... Oh, wait, no... Someone just used a laptop at work to access the internet and got it infected with malware. It's like Christmas all over! You know, fixing your grandparents computer because it runs slow.
 
Just because the device isn't directly connected to the SCADA system in question doesn't mean it didn't pose a threat. They were one airgap jump away from the actual SCADA system and also likely using that person to collect further info on ways to gain access.

Saying, "hey Russia, why don't you help fight those Isis terrorists...instead of invading countries and funding militants that shoot down planes" is a long ways off from being allied with Russia. Trump is a businessman, and sometimes you can make a deal with a shitty person to stop them from being a pain in the global ass. It doesn't make them your friend.

Well, there was this one time at Band Camp, when the US and the Israeli's developed a worm called Stuxnet which was designed to compromise SCADA and PLC systems.

Uh, this has been going on for years. I realise it's not real now because MY TEAM WON! FUCK YEAH!

There are several countries that are testing "cyber warfare" (what a stupid name). Russia has admitted to testing varied techniques and systems in the past, and doubtless continues to do so. I would be more shocked if any somewhat technologically advanced country wasn't testing the waters.

Right now it's all harmless, the worst thing that's happened is a bunch of dirt bags were revealed to be a bunch of dirt bags right at election time (OH NO!).

There is huge potential to do real harm to a populace though, and these systems are very difficult to secure. Even against a spotty-faced teen.
 
Even if their claims are true it does not prove the Russian government did it. Russia has lots of hackers, could have been some 16yo kid for all we know. And I suppose they expect this proves the Russians hacked the DNC? That is the extent of their proof? Next!
 
I think it's pretty clear, we all need to head to Kevin Smith's basement with a Ham Radio, because "Live Free or Die Hard" is about to become real.
 
This is more likely a case of some dumbass clicking on a link or going to an infected website than it was "hacking". The news just likes to say "hacking" because it sounds so much more menacing than the real story which is people are stupid and their systems aren't properly secured.

This power thing could very easily be fake. However, I don't doubt that Russia has created accounts inside the DNC. Russia truly does have one of the scariest propaganda machines. There are documentaries from Russian citizens who were hired into these positions, without being told what the job was until they were told to start fabricating news stories to make Russia look favorable and do other tasks. Russia has a deep online presence to influence the world, including fake social media accounts, reddit, and forums. For all I know, the posters who started saying that Trump supports Russia, Hillary supports Russia, Hillary ran a pedo ring, and the poster above could all be working for Russian propaganda mills.

CIA has a small history in comparison and the fact is they're slow and inefficient as shit. So if the CIA's going to spend their 1 propaganda per quarter faking some power plant crisis, so be it. I don't agree with letting the US government off the hook, but I don't agree with downplaying Russia at all.

That malware is floating around the internet, any idiot can get infected. How about do a survey to see how many random peeps are infected with this stuf, from Porn or whatever. It wasn't targeted, they shot a shotgun blast and we keep finding 'shot' from time to time.

Use to be that Conservatives would get into wars and the Dems pull the US out, similar to what happened in Iraq. The Dems being middle of the road to the left. a The Dems lways making like the peacenicks since the 60's. All of a sudden its the other way around from the talk thats going on here in the last few weeks. Dems are hawkish for war and the Pres-elect and his conservatives are playing it cool. Then you have a hawkish conservative McCain acting like a Dem. Are these the people that need to be cleaned out of the swamp. The Establishment. Between Pres O and McCain and their identical hawkishness, you would think they were of the same seed, same mother, some where in their lineage. Those two can confuse the heck out of me. If I didn't see them and only heard them talk, I'd swear they were the best of friends from the same party, bosom buddies.

I'd have you all watch that. I didn't even have to be the Ze Russians, could have been a company hired to hack in and the laptop wasn't supposed to be part of the hit. Who knows, they never report everything and almost never have all the facts. With this 1hour news cycle, nothing gets redacted, it just slaps out there, ruins lives and everyone moves along.

Just a side note. Russia didn't invade anything. It would be no different then if Cuba fell into a civil war and America went and protected Guantanmo Bay (which it would). Crimea has been a Russian naval base for almost as long as the USA has existed (1783). And the Netherlands is one of Russia biggest energy allies in Europe....shooting down that plane was of ZERO benefit to Russia. I suppose it's also worth noting that ISIS/ISIL/Daesh taking of Syria is also of ZERO benefit to Russia.

I understand the point you were trying to make though.
