The analysts are weighing in on what they feel were missed opportunities for Apple and Samsung this holiday season. Of all the explanations given in the article, I think this person hit the nail on the head:

“Apple has the strongest ecosystem, with its hardware, software and app and content stores,” said consumer tech and mobile industry consultant Chetan Sharma. “IPhone users looking for an upgrade stick with Apple. But in a year when Samsung dropped the ball in a huge way,” he said, Apple “didn’t have a phone with a compelling enough feature set to lure Samsung owners away.”

not only that but Samsung was even way ahead of time (and competion) with the new years sesson....

How can you say one phone has a excellent overall ecosystem, and then say it doesn't offer enough to interest competitors?

People have already made their decisions (if they have an opinion). I probably won't buy an iPhone 7, due to my own concerns. But that sure as hell doesn't mean Samsung missed an opportunity with me.

This animosity........

Yeah, I got an Honor 8 for $260 with 2 fast chargers. The thing is absolutely a beast for the price. And the camera is really, really good.

I hate Apple's ecosystem. I love the Galaxy Note... but after the current debacle it'll be a while before a used Note is affordable again.

Apple is incapable of implementing the feature-set a former Samsung owner would want. Such as SD card slot and a generally open way to upgrade and move on. I can easily move from one android to the next. It's actually fairly easy to move to Apple to, it's getting out of that black hole that is the thing. But it's interesting that it is Apple vs. Samsung all the time, not Apple vs. Android phones. Personally I'm eyeing the LG V20 to move to from my current Note 4, which still in itself is a rather competent Smart-phone.

I agree android in general has advanced tremendously. Heck even Amazon (android based I know) is becoming an impressive eco system... I mean holy shit Amazon is quietly becoming the next MS and I think many haven't noticed yet.. Everything I use Amazon is smooth, rock solid (fire TV, fire tablet, cloud, music).

I agree - Amazon has been working slow and steady for years. They do have nice products now. I like the Fire tablets better than iPads (plus much cheaper!). I have kids - Amazon has a family program that offers unlimited apps/tv/books, good parental control, and a decent selection to choose from.
The original FireTV was not the best. Having used a recent version, its improved considerably over the years and is now a nice product.
Amazon Echo platform - in my opinion, this was a stealth move by them and they delivered a killer product. They will need to keep moving forward and innovating as Google, Microsoft, and I guess Apple, are already playing in this space. I think Amazon walked by every other company and beat them to the punch.
Will we ever see the return of the Fire Phone? That was a disaster for Amazon - but kind of surprised they didn't keep moving forward with it. Version 1 was bad, but over time they would have gotten to the point of having a competent device (based on their other platforms).

This x10. My current phone is a Nexus 6 which replaced a GS4 which replaced a GS2. And I have to say, I'm far more likely to look into either another Nexus, or a Pixel if/when I ever move on from this phone. Samsung's look sexy sure, but after not being impressed with anything they've had to offer lately (apart from the incendiary feature), I highly doubt I'll be buying another Samsung in the future.

That said, Apple still doesn't have anything to offer me that would make me want to switch to an iphone. But their constant focus on Samsung, Samsung, Samsung really makes it seem like they're not even trying to compete with any other phone running android.

I, sadly, am still waiting for someone to make a cheap 4.5" Android phone under 125mm long with 2GB RAM and a fast CPU.

I consider iOS a negative feature, and something to avoid if possible. Why would I want a locked down device where a company, Apple in this case, can control and limit what apps I can install on my device that I paid for? I like the ability to use apks or install 3rd party app stores like Amazon's. Why would I want to pay $200 extra for 128 GB of storage when I can use a $40 128 GB mSD card that's swappable as well? A better ecosystem? Lol, yeah right. Many apps that are free on Android have a cost on the Apple store. I guess it's better if you like paying for shit you can get for free.

Seriously Apple's value proposition is way off. They can go sit sideways if they think I'm going to pay twice as much for a device that offers less than my $270 Huawei honor 8.

But.....but.....but.....the iPhone is practically magical.......

I've used Galaxy S something for 3 generations now, don't expect to change.

My note 5 is so fubar right now. It's got a cracked rear glass, cracked rear camera lens, half broken headphone jack that only works when you hold the plug a certain way, and the volume down button was stuck so it would just boot into recovery every time I would reboot it. Unlike my Note 4, I can't repair the headphone jack or swap out a rear cover. And since the aluminum bezel was dented around the volume down button and thus holding it depressed, I just got pissed and took a file and filed away the bezel until I could rip out the down button with a screw driver.

When the charging jack on my Note 4 went bad, I just disassembled the phone and replaced it. I could change the rear cover at will.

SO, as far as I'm concerned, the NOTE series has been going downhill since the Note 4. I don't give a shit if the phone is 1mm thinner, I'd rather be able to fix it when I want to.

In the end I probably would have bought a Note 7 by now, but honestly I'm starting to think that Alphabet is a scum bag of a company and I want to step away from them more and more everyday.

Um, all of the problems you mention have nothing to do with Alphabet, and everything to do with your (ab)use of your phone, with a touch of Samsung making things harder to repair.

I'm well aware of that fact. Doesn't change my opinion of Alphabet or Eric Schimdt.
