The gang over at Real Hardware Reviews have a pair of Crucial MX300 2050GB SSDs on the test bench for a little RAID action today. The crew says that the sheer size and great performance justifies the expense of a pair of these drives.

As Crucial is the consumer retail ‘face’ for Micron these massive capacity Solid State Drives are not a ‘halo’ product put out in very limited capacity for bragging rights. Instead of ‘oh look we broke the 2TB barrier!!!’ PR spin this model is readily and easily available at darn near retail chain that offers the 1050GB model. That alone makes the 2050GB rather impressive and underscores how fast IMFT has ramped up production of their new ‘3D’ TLC NAND.

Soooo, it looks like I should actually buy a gskill phoenix blade?

Nuts to that -- buy a Samsung 950 or 960 pro... I have the 950 pro 512GB, it's cheaper and even faster than the Gskill hardware. going price now is $340 or so on amazon before cashback :)

Both the G.Skill and the Samsung drives are waaay more than the price of the Crucial drive. It's an apples to oranges comparison anyway, because the G.Skill drive is a PCIe form factor and the Samsung drives are M.2 PCIe. The 950 pro maxes out at a quarter of the MX300's capacity. Sure, if you've got a thousand bucks available for an SSD, those drives will outperform the Crucial offering, but the MX300 seems like a really good compromise between cost, performance and capacity.

(Disclaimer: I had a hand in designing the MX300, so there's every chance in the world that I'm a little biased.)

If you get any input into the MX400 then, use more of the PCB for more storage, speed be damned! The price/GB needs to start dropping as the drives are already fast enough to handle any consumer workload.

The lulz went over everyone's head.

I have a 950 pro, and I love it.

My Samsung 840 Pro's 128gb x 2 in RAID0 32KB strip. Custom Intel RAID OROM. Vs mx300 raid0. What are your thoughts?
