This Was The Year Of VR, Until AR Stole It

Why does it always have to be one or the other? It's not like AR, as cool as the technology is, stole any of VR's thunder this year, or vice versa. In fact, I think both will coexist just fine because they are clearly different products targeting different markets.

VR, AR, MR and every other "R" need to coexist for a while. For now virtual reality is the easiest to pull off -- software and hardware makers have the fewest things to keep track of and complete control of the virtual environment -- and also the most developed. It's fairly easy for a developer to build a VR app or for a manufacturer to make a VR-ready phone. Mixed reality is clearly harder.

Headline is 100% bullshit. We have THREE major VR offerings on sale now. How many "AR" solutions are out there? Chances are, people are at least AWARE of PSVR and Oculus...maybe even Vive. Has ANYONE heard of ANY "AR" solution other than the joke that is Hololens? Yup, I call bullshit.

why is the Hololens a joke?

All I can say is I've enjoyed the pre-ordered vive setup I have.

Yup, we gotta talk about the next big R thing so we can ignore how much of a gigantic retail failure VR was in 2016.

AR today is in the same state that VR was in the early 90s: the theory is there, and proof-of-concept prototypes can be made, but the tech is not there to bring everything together in a usable practical device.

AR?

Actual Reality? Yeah, Actual Reality beats Virtual Reality every time :p

Most certainly.

I thought the Pokemon game was considered Augmented Reality. Maybe this tech is what they were referring to?

This Was The Year Of VR, Until Shovelware Ruined It

So sick of sifting through endless amounts of bullshit throwaway junk in Steam's VR store just to find decent non-cashgrabs/demos...

not when your brain can be uploaded into a virtual world where you cant tell the difference....oooooohhhh the moral hazards we shall enjoy :D

software or online content that has been added to a CD or placed on the Internet without having been altered so as to suit the new medium.

pretty sure thats not the right word but i get what you mean. android app market is the same...jesus.

There are multiple definitions, as the term has (d)evolved over time:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shovelware

I meant the more current interpretation of course, not to be confused with references to similarly-shitty shareware/junkware bundles of yesteryear...

Low-budget, poor-quality games, released in the hopes of being purchased by unsuspecting customers, are often referred to as "shovelware". This can lead to discoverability issues when a platform has no quality control. Several well-known examples were released for the Wii, including ports of PlayStation 2 games which had previously only been released in Europe made by Data Design Interactive.[4] The Slaughtering Grounds and other games by Digital Homicide Studios have also been called "prime examples" of shovelware.

Inb4 Vive & Rift marketplaces are mentioned, ffs...

Is project Tango considered AR? I can see AR becoming more mainstream if it is. Does it really needs to be part of glasses like hololens?

I don't know what MR is, but TR is pretty bad.

The terrible FOV. The dirty little secret MS downplayed at first and now just tries never to talk about.

That and they haven't been able to get any developers interested. Nor have MS themselves bothered to create any killer proof-of-concept apps or demos for it. Just like they didn't bother to do with Kinect 2.

Also notice the shift in MS's corporate marketing message this year. In 2015 they were still trying to pound the Hololens / AR drum as "the next big paradigm", "AR > VR", yada yada. Suddenly this year they're trying to jump the VR bandwagon - partnering with Oculus, trying to crowbar "Xbox" and "VR" into the same headlines by announcing gimmicks and half-measures like "Xbox Streaming with Oculus Rift".

MS backed the wrong horse once again, the first movers have already left them behind. VR has all the momentum, comparatively.

The FOV is pretty bad but what do you expect? It is a fucking proto type really. It is like SegaVR or whatver. It has a long way to go before truly cool but its a good device for what tech exists.

Does cutting edge = shit because it isn't perfect? I dont think so.

Nothing else better exists because hololens is about as good as tech gets at the moment and i dont think that makes it a bad product........
