I am about to pull the trigger on a 2016 MacBook Pro, the 15" base model with the Radeon 450.

I would use it for work and while I'm on my cycling trainer to run a program called Zwift. I am curious, how do the thermals hold up on the new MBPs? I had a 2012 model before and it would get REALLY hot after an hour of running Zwift. Can someone run some benchmarks to get an idea of temps? It would spike up to 100*C!!! Scary....

If you put stress test level jobs on any computer for an hour, it will get hot.

That said, I've run GPU stress tests on Retinas for extended periods of time at native resolution and found the part near the GPU to get toasty but the rest didn't get too bad. The only time I've had one outright fail from the test was when it had an issue that I knew it was gonna fail anyway.

I just got a 15" MBPr Touch Bar model today from work and it's nifty but a dongle-o-matic.

I have one on order but haven't received it yet. I'll update you once I do.

Gaming laptops stay cool. They are made for it.

Apple's aren't made for extended work and stay cool.

That's not true at all, Apple Laptops are made to be used. I have run 3D tests (automated stuff for work) on rMPB for literally days on end without issue, 100% CPU and high GPU as well. Do they get hot? Yes for course but they shoudlbt fail. Also remember their made of aluminum so they heat gose right thru them where pcs tend to hide the heat from you except at the exhaust vents.

OP, tue 2012 was early core i5/7 tech they did run hotter than the 2013-2015 hawsell units. I actually think the 2015 AMD based 15" i7 runs hotter than the Nvidia based 2013 15" i7.

I'm sure the new 2016 models run even cooler.i wouldn't worry about it.

I use one for work which includes a lot of 1080p surveillance video exports/encodes. I'll often peg the CPU at 100% for about 15 minutes at a time. It definitely gets warm but nothing like the lap burners of old. I remember the last MacBook pro with an optical drive used to literally burn me under a heavy load. This is nothing like that.

Mine is the 2799 config.

I bought one to replace a late 2008 15" MacBook Pro. Everything works fine so far. Im really impressed at the clarity of the screen and how thin the machine is. I got the 2.7/ 512GB/455 in space gray version.

while I do not use the app you speak of... I do run 3 OS's at the same time (two windows, and OSX). yes it gets warm but I would say it less warm than the older models.

are you using bootcamp, parallels, or VM Fusion. Im looking into getting a Samsung t3 external SSD to run Windows :

I thought I would add to this topic to show how good the MacBook pros are under load. I Have been encoding this BD movie since about 10:00pm last night. Its 7:00ish now, so I have been running 100% CPU for about 9 hours with NO additional cooling. The laptop is mearly sitting tilted on my stand so it breaths nice. The CPU cooler area that on the top left of the keyboard gets the hottest on my laptop. I don't even use the Nvidia 750M so the right side never really gets warm (unless I'm in bootcamp where it uses only the 750m)

The stand

Handbrake, 9 hours later, not even 100*F

The wall temp behind me.. I guess that sorta shows the room temp.. its a comfortable 74*, but not exactly cold in here right now.

Now.. when the laptop first starts crunching 100% CPU it will spike up a bit hotter but once the fans start doing their job it stays cool. Also, thats its a dull low pitch fan noise that you can NOT hear from the next room. Unlike most PC's haha. Of course a pic is pretty quite when it shuts down from a thermal trip 2 hours in hahah

THANK YOU!! This thread helped me so much, thanks guys. Just sold my 12" Macbook retina to a fellow H user today and have been happily using my 2016 MacBook Pro 15 for training. It runs Zwift beautifully and stays very stable under load, doesn't even get that hot. :) You guys are the best. I definitely need to get one of those aluminum stands like you have pictured above.
