I have a $61 Amazon credit and trying to decide if I should order 8 GB more of ram (two 4 GB to match the other two 4 GB currently in my mobo) ?

I am on a older system and mobo with DDR3.

I say it depends on how long you plan to keep the system. Your next PC will most likely not use DDR3. It would also depend on what your primary use for the system is.

Gaming plan to upgrade whole pc in 6 months time

I would say you probably want to pass on the 8GB upgrade then. You most likely will not get that much benefit for the extra 8GB now in gaming.

I would say do it, you will no regret it. However, what is your system specifically? You will definitely benefit from the additional ram in gaming without a doubt.

8gb vs 16gb... as others have said it's totally up to you and only you can answer the question.

Do you ever max out the 8gb?
How long to do you plan on keeping that setup?
Do you intend on changing anything that effects you're ram useags?
Do you resale to upgrade?
If so do you bundle or part out?

My for me, at home, less and less is being done on my desktop. I have pegged my 8gb with Lightroom and photoshop but not enough to upgrade to 16, instead I'm slowly moving away from that workflow and moving to a light weight workflow I run from my MacBook (16gb lol) or iPad Pro. So not only do I not need to upgrade, but I don't predict needing the desktop at all in the future. It's all about needs, too often I see the enthusiast mindset upgrading things like HDD/SSD and ram past really needs just because or "future" proofing when very few fully utilize their hardware before they upgrade it all.

Where as if you game, can you ever have enough gpu/CPU power? Maybe sell you're gpu and add the amazon credit to get a better gpu... if you game.

Or just buy a MacBook and PS4 and call it done. But I'm older and out of the loop I guess

an extra 8GB for gaming will not do anything. save your money for a new build. unless your running VMs or have a specific need for more than 8GB, its fine for 95% of people. heck, outside of gaming 4GB is fine. more ram doesn't = better performance.
