The employees were so sick of seeing this kid every day at their store that they bought him a Wii U so he would stop coming. Okay, that is not true (or is it?).

“This kid came in every single day to play the display Wii U, the employees in this store saw an opportunity to make a child smile and did just that. They chipped in and purchased a Wii U for him with their own money. This is amazing, why shop at Amazon when you have genuine people in this world that you can continue to help keep a job.”

That kids lack of reaction...

I think that has more or less to do with how the Best Buy guy presented the Wii U to the kid. He should have practiced a bit, almost sounded like they where playing a prank on the kid.

What if the kids doesn't have a TV at home? Or what if he has no friends and Best Buy is his sole social outlet? Damn you Best Buy...I'm shopping at Amazon!

I think the kid might have some mental issues. I dunno.

So there aren't any genuine people at Amazon that we can't continue to help keep a job? Bunch of fake people over at Amazon!

That was nice of them, but this makes people dependent on others. Best Buy should have given him a job (he looks old enough) so he could earn his WiiU. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach him how to fish & he'll eat for a lifetime.

I don't want to sound like the bad guy here. It was a nice thing. I'm thinking maybe now they can give other people a chance to demo the game rather than have him selflessly hog it every single day. lol I don't know.

I get that he's a "kid" but I was expecting like a 10-12 year old small kid, that kid was bigger than the employee. They need to hook him up with a job instead....

BB Manager that OKed this, I can tell you it was just a business decision.

Problem: Kid is coming in everyday hogging the display, so paying customers never get a chance to test the Wii and that results in lost sales. Can't just kick him off, because he's a young black kid and that would probably spark a negative backlash, so other solution is needed.

Solution: Give the kid a Wii, but also film it, and then upload it to youtube. Put ads on the video (which they did), and the revenue alone can pay for the Wii and much more. Secondly, its free advertising for BBuy, and advertising costs a fortune. And finally, you remark while giving it to him that he NO LONGER HAS TO COME HERE, lol!

Older I get, the more I learn about how the world really works.

And the reason the kid isn't excited is that his house may be crappier and noisier than the Best Buy store, won't have parents there to nag him that he's just playing video games all day, and always has free games at his disposal as they rotate. And pretty soon he would have been playing the Switch next-gen console. So its no wonder he wasn't at all excited, and is probably just going to sell that Wii on craigslist.

This is great, but... "Why shop at Amazon...?" Because Best Buy is a soul-sucking pit of awfulness. I worked for Geek Squad during my college years and I got sick of my managers yelling at me for not charging $30 to take 30 seconds to show little old ladies where their picture folder was on their new MacBooks. We routinely screwed customers on the orders of our managers and most of the Geek Squad warranties simply didn't cover the most common failures. Once, we were even told it was not possible to give a (slightly) discounted laptop repair to a guy who had just spent over $10,000 on home theater equipment (we confirmed this). Even our employee discounts were a joke, as they didn't apply to most high-dollar items.

Cool for the kid, I wish him the best and these employees probably do their best, but management OK'ed this as an attention-grabbing move, pure and simple.

"The store’s General Manger confirmed the loose details of the story in a phone call, saying that the teen visited the store often and the plan to buy him a Wii U was hatched by associates from the Appliances Department. He didn’t become aware of the gesture until the video later went viral."

From the article.

1. The kid doesn't want to be at home for some reason.

2. The kids TV sucks. Or isn't.

Salty? you bet, but I think there is a reason the kid was hanging out there everyday and it would explain his non-reaction.

Nice thing to do in theory.

He didn't act excited at all. I remember being a kid and I remember that smug WTF look on his face. That kid was lying to his parents about his whereabouts. Now that he's stuck with that lie; has no way to get that WiiU into his house.

maybe he did just go there to get away from home, for all we know he has one at home and the same game, but uses this as a way to do what he enjoys and get out of the house. Can't just assume. Nice gesture nonetheless

Sure, that's the official story, but Jimmy Kimmel has made me suspicious of online videos, especially involving big box stores. Many, including Amazon, have tried to pass off created material for marketing as being done by a loan individual, like the Amazon Prime transformer costume for Halloween.

Rumor is, he's now sitting in a Land Rover display model at a dealership for hours and hours everyday. *fingers crossed*

Exactly. What a superior dumb-ass thing to say.

That being said...Kudos to the BB employees. It doesn't take much to be a positive force in someone's life.

He had no emotion because he is a poor kid from a poor family. He is not used to getting things given to him, he basically was in shock and had no idea what to do. You didnt see him wipe that tear off his face? And Jesus fuck, i cant beleive someone brought up race in here "Oh hes a black and we cant just kick him out because that looks bad" Why does everything have to be about race? And it was later said that the kid does have a TV for it, its just that he live in the projects with his parents and they could not afford a Wiiu, he was also nervous about walking back home with it in hand because he didnt want to get jacked, so an employee drove him to his house and explained it to him Mom. Also they bought him SSB too, so he has a game to play, plus with the WiiU i dont even think you need a TV since it can be played on the gamepad.

The bringing up race thing is dumb, but at the same time so is the assumption that he or his family couldn't afford it or want to buy it. It could very well be that he didn't have anything better to do and wanted to get outside the house(could be for any number of reasons) and played videogames at best buy instead of doing worse things out of boredom.

That is awesome. I doubt anybody knew the full story about the kid. Seemed like they didn't even know his name. But it did look like they had all the accessories to go with it.

I have no doubt that this was to get BB some free press.

Happy for the kid, though.
