The Last Guardian Performs Poorly On The Base PS4

So much for Sony’s claim that the base PS4 would offer consistent experiences with the Pro. This is a sign that developers will either explicitly target the Pro hardware or take less effort in ensuring that games at least play as well on the weaker console.

From a performance perspective, the bottom line is this. The only option available to PlayStation gamers in getting a regularly smooth 30fps is to use PlayStation 4 Pro, running at 1080p. If you're on a regular PS4 you're in for a very variable experience; lurching between 20-30fps just by running around empty areas, and with stutters to over 110ms. All playthroughs have full v-sync, and there are thankfully no frame-pacing issues at 30fps, but sadly playing The Last Guardian on a standard PS4 easily gives the worst performance of all three options.

The article says this as if most 1080p titles for XBone and PS4 play at constant framerates.

Fuck 30fps and devs who continue to push higher res at the cost of shit fps. Go 60 or DIAF already...

Not overly surprising. It's an engine designed for the PS3 ported to the PS4. Additionally, it sounds like Sony had to get several other studios to step in and help make the game over the years. It also sounds like the game ran very poorly on the PS3.

Crappy devs, the game looks horrible, so its obviously not a hardware issue.

Ive seen better graphics from PS2 games.

EDIT: ROFL!

Maybe by the year 2024 we'll have consoles that can just give us 1080p 60fps gaming.

I've played Team Icos previous games, it's part of their MO. They have an experience and story to tell and controls and framerate suffer. This doesn't seem like news to me and I really doubt it's a case of prioritizing PS4pro over the PS4. It's just a case of their games never being smooth.

And to say you've seen better graphics on PS2, do us all a favor and go get your eyes checked. Don't drive until then, please.

Agreed. Team Ico's games always run poorly. In this case the PS4 Pro's added oomph just help the game out. It wasn't designed for the PS4 Pro.

This is why we should do away with consoles and have them be small pcs in a custom box with the gpu being in some type of module that people could change. Vs being stuck with the same crap for years

Would not work.

Unintelligent people like consoles because all they need to do is put in a disk, pick up a controller and hit a power button to play a game.

Any talk of upgrading, framerate, more then 10 buttons, etc will just confuse them. Hell, they only just recently figured out the difference between 720p and 1080p.

I'm renting it right now on the PS4 Pro. I played for a while in 4k mode, then switched to 1080 when the framerates started dropping pretty badly... they did not seem to improve much.

The developer didn't put much effort into optimizing the performance, period.

That makes too much sense!

I am renting it and playing it now on a standard PS4 and it's a mess in areas. Funny thing is though I have been waiting forever for this game, now that it's here I just don't feel the same emotional attachment I had with ICO or even to SotC. I think I am near the end already also.

I think its just bad development honestly. I doubt 60fps at 4k though from the PS4 pro anytime soon. (heck im not even sure Xbox Scorpio will run 60fps completely smooth at 4k as well). You can't say do away with consoles completely though. there area lot of gamers who would still love to just have a box that plays games easily.

4k 60fps is easy, it just depends on how much is sacrificed. Texture, sound, physics, polygons, shaders, lighting, etc etc. No, 4k60fps won't be easy to maintain the same look when the games for console are trying to squeeze as much graphic content as they can and still be playable. I myself have a ps4pro and do enjoy the system though, skyrim at 4k plays well, but just stepping up the resolution is really not all it is made out to be, just smaller dots. I really would rather just have better detailed 1080 and people not wanting the next 'big thing' just because they heard it somewhere.

I do pc and console, I really do enjoy just hitting power and clicking on a game, also watching it resume where it left off with next to no loading time. My game pc unfortunately ends up being my pc I use for work, and bills, and web browsing. So it gets cluttered and messy. I would love a pc I could just dedicate to nothing but games, but when I can grab a ps4pro for $350 (when it went on sale a few weeks ago) and just play, it is nice. Also, it seems like there are more available players to connect with on the more obscure games. KB/M just isn't comfy anymore. Rather be in my bungee chair with a beer and a blanket by the fire playing my ps4 or xbone.

Yeah watching the FPS graphs was scary. 30fps @ 1080p (most of the time) and less dropped frames, or 1900p/4k upscale at like 22-28fps.. fucking disaster.

Having a couple of kids, long gaming sessions no longer fit in with the family. I really like being able to put in a quick session of Borderlands2 on the PS4 Pro and just power down (sleep mode) when needed and later resume my gaming at the exact moment I powered down using a wireless controller.

Well he is a wild animal, not a trained pet. At some point I seem to recall the developers saying they were trying to make Trico feel more like a real animal. So part of that would be not always listening to your commands. Though from what I've heard he listens more and more as the game goes along and the bond gets stronger. Though being a wild animal, and obviously partly based on a cat, he will still sometimes get fixated on random things at times even then.

Hey now! Some of best friends are console peasants and I'll have you know they can handle up to 12 BUTTONS on a controller! And for the record, they have heard of 4K... they just don't know what it does.

From what I've seen, though, it's just that parts of the game are mechanically broken. Like, you will attempt to solve a puzzle and Trico just won't fucking do what he's supposed to, causing you to question if you solved it correctly or not. You did, but the game just gave you the middle finger.

To me that is just an exercise in epic frustration.

I can see that getting annoying, depending on how often it happens or how long it takes Trico to react. What they're trying to do requires a really really careful balance between him acting like an animal while also not having the player stand around and go "Okay, what the hell?" too often.

Yeah. Based on that video above, I think they kind of failed. :p

Well, it's a 7 minute video in an 8-10 hour game, so who knows. I've seen some people not be bothered by it and other people getting frustrated. I'll pick up the game eventually and figure it out for myself.

Yeah, same here, though I'd have to buy a PS4 first...

Most def... but I do love the artwork and general style.

Anyone know if/when this is coming to PC? An AI mod could allow the player to tweak how obedient the cat-dog-chicken is, and also surely fix the performance issues (unless its a super bad port).

It won't. It was developed by Sony's internal development studios.

This just isn't true though. The base PS4 is shit, and it would perform like shit even if the PS4Pro didn't exist. There are tons of games that are plenty evidence of this before the PS4P was a thing.

FFS there are some games on PS4P that still perform poorly or perform worse. Then look at SOTC, that game ran at sub 20FPS a lot of times.

Why you design it for ease of upgrades. Just make it so the GPU and Heatsink are in one piece and cartridge style. Turn off console, pull GPU lock switch, and press GPU eject button. Plug in new GPU. Make it like that memory upgrade module on the N64.

That's more to do with developers not optimizing for the console. I have the problem with my Xbox One S and Battlefield 1. You get the fps drops or stutters in the game during the flying campaigns. It's pretty annoying. I get it on some of my PS4 games. I have yet to really use my PS4 Pro with some high graphics games. All the ones I've been playing recently on it are low graphics.

Video was funny as shit. I liked how the animal has a very short attention span and it can be a chore to command it.

I don't have a problem with the graphics, I like it as a style.

I do think that having a hardware update in a console market is fundamentally breaking eco system. The whole point is to say that I have this mark to hit and that's it.
