Here's something you don't see every day. Most of the time you don't even get an apology when you are falsely accused of piracy, let alone be compensated for your troubles.

An Oregon District Court has sided with a wrongfully accused man, who was sued for allegedly downloading a pirated copy of the Adam Sandler movie The Cobbler. According to the court's recommendations, the man is entitled to more than $17,000 in compensation as the result of the filmmakers "overaggressive" and "unreasonable" tactics.

That probably put that production company in the red on that movie.

  1. Never heard of this movie
  2. If it's allowed, they should get punitive damages, because this was over the top wrong.

Was one of the movies Adam Sandler did on his Netflix contract IIRC. The plot of the story is that he's a ... cobbler (person who fixes shoes for those who are a bit wet behind the ears) in a NYC shop, something something plot, he puts shoes on and he looks just like the people who's shoes they belong to, something something plot with neighbor who's barber, something something probably Rob Schnider in this I forgot, The End. It's one of his "serious" roles, in that he's not funny :D

I sometimes like his serious roles (though I can't imagine Rob is in any of those). Guess I'll look in netflix...but this makes it even harder to believe someone was stealing it. I could see it if you wanted to watch it on a plane (cuz legally downloading is a new thing), but in a nursing home? Nah.

Lawsuits are expensive so who knows if he got his money back in spending in fees.

"We're sorry you had to watch an Adam Sandler movie. Here's $17k for your pain and suffering."

I thought the same thing. Sandler movies haven't been good in a long time. I use to like his stuff.

Should be all of his fees + a mill to stop this stuff form happning as much....is that not why they sue people for a $$$$$$$ so people don't do it anymore? Should work both ways.

Had he lost, he pays hundreds of thousands, he wins, he gets a comparative pittance, the kind of money the MPAA loses in the sofa.

Justice for all.
2 different crimes genius. He is not counter-suing the MPAA of piracy

The Cobbler is a pretty good movie IMO. And although Sandler is not "funny" in it, it is a pretty funny movie.

The article states that the damages award was to have his fees and costs paid in defending the suit to the point of having it dismissed.

Win: 17k to Joe. Lose: 250k per movie to content mafia. Sounds fair.

They should come out with new rules. What they sue for, is what the defendant wins if the plaintiff loses. If they sue for $3 mil and lose, then the winner gets $3 mil.

Ok had to look up the movie no Rob Schnider, seems this movie wasn't made by Happy Madison production company and he was actually hired to do it. So it's not filled with all of his friends like usual. The movie wasn't supremely horrible, but wasn't that good either IMO. He was very "meh" as an actor in it, although I do feel he gets too much crap for what he does (Although the Ridiculous 6 movie was fairly horrible), but a movie like "Blended" I'll watch whenever it's on TV, same with "50 First Dates"

They should have to PROVE that it was you in order to win a lawsuit against you. With a good antenna you can reliably pick up wifi 1/4 mil away and get up to 1 mile reliably if you have clear los. So it could be any person in any house within a circle with that radius. Prove it was me....

Yeah should isn't how the law works, these are civil cases not criminal cases, in civil cases you just need to convince a majority of jurors that it was probable you did it.

I agree, but open WiFi among consumers (as opposed to this particular case) is pretty rare. I just did a search and found a dozen or so networks. All of them are locked. 10 years ago, that wasn't the case.

Oh plz, the overwhelming majority of home routers have WPS enabled by default and Reaver cracks them easily.

Punch Drunk Love is probably my favorite by him. It was so fucking dark.

I did like 50 First Dates. But I'd give credit to Barrymore on that one too.

At this point, with his record, being outed publically as someone who watched an Adam Sandler film is pretty bad public shaming.
