Like them or not, Google's Pixel phones will be the iPhone competitor we've demanded for years

Ordered one awhile ago, it kept saying processing. Still not ship yet. Anyone know how long it takes from processing to ship?

From who?

I first placed mine from the Google store, was waiting for almost a month and then it updated and said it would ship out the 25th of NEXT month. I found out you can order them from Project Fi and just never activate the service, placed order on a Tuesday, went into processing Wednesday, delivered that Friday.

Seems Google allocated lots of phone to Project Fi and very few to the Google Store and keeps them as separate stock.

Just chiming in after having my phone for a bit longer and I have to say I am really liking my Pixel XL.

The battery easily lasts all day. You have to almost try if you want to drain it within normal waking hours. Battery life so far totally meets my needs. I used my phone less than usual today, so 1 hour and 5 minutes of screen on time, about an hour of Google play music, 15 minutes of phone calls. Still have 70% left.

I have seen up to about 5.5 hours of screen on time when I was testing but I have to really try to use my phone that much in a day.

The unlimited photo storage is a great bonus.

I like the voice assistant and I hope they and others work towards making it more uaeful. Right now I love adding things to my shopping list when I need to. Very convenient.

The Google WI-FI assistant is saving me a ton of mobile data. I'm looking at you Flipboard, Facebook, Twitter etc. That load tons of images... The public wifi I have access is heavily filtered and has a lot of devices connected. I like the way wifi assist connects automatically and establishes a VPN with Google. This protects my data from others on the open WI-FI. I appreciate thus means all my data is being funnelled through Google's servers but for the tine being it seems like a reasonable trade off given how much data about how I use my phone is already collected. This also has the effect of bypassing the web filter on the WI-FI connection also I can browse all of the relevant news etc.tgat would otherwise be blocked. I haven't seen a lot if discussion about this feature but it is exclusive and free with Pixel and Nexus devices. It took a few days after I got my phone for them to enable it in Canada. Sometimes I have to turn it off and back on for it to connect.

Already I can see Google is working diligently to improve this phone. I hope they keep on full steam ahead because this is why I bought a Google Pixel for a rather expensive price. This is the difference from the Samsung devices I have been using for years. (Note 2,3,4,5,7).

I just ordered Pixel 128gb in black from Verizon's black Friday sale @ $15/month payment plan for 24 months (total cost $360). Finally replacing my S5. My idea had been to wait for a price drop next year, but this works. They have the 32gb at $10/month.

Off topic:

But still confused as to why Google gave Verizon the Pixel's ? If Google wants this phone to be a smashing success and available for all, why limit it to just one carrier in the U.S. ?

Most people ( 90% ) still upgrade their phones through their carriers first and foremost. Just puzzled why they didn't also put this phone on ATT, T-Mobile and Sprint.

I know you can finance through Google or Best Buy, but if you're already on a carrier contract plan, that's not good, you prefer to just get a phone your carrier offers.

Oh well, rant over...I do think the Pixel XL is the #1 phone of 2016.

I actually have seen a few Pixels in the wild which surprised me. The owners are on Verizon and bought through them.

The Verizon Black Friday deal will move quite a few Pixels as well.

Black Friday deals have been kind of underwhelming for the last few years, but Verizon seems to be taking full advantage of its "exclusive" on the US carrier version of the Pixel phones. For customers who buy a new phone today (Thanksgiving) or tomorrow, the price is reduced to $10 a month for the Pixel and $15 a month for the Pixel XL. That works out to just $239.99 for the Pixel and $359.99 for the Pixel XL (only the 128GB model of the larger phone is being discounted) over the two-year payment period.

If you're waiting to hear the catch, here it is: this isn't a cash discount. You're actually paying the full retail price of the phone, less a $409 bill credit that's split up month by month. The discount is only for new customers, and you must remain active on Verizon for the full term of the financing period to qualify for the discount. So anyone hoping to snag a dirt-cheap Pixel on Verizon with an initial signup and then head for a cheaper carrier is out of luck.

But still confused as to why Google gave Verizon the Pixel's ?

It's called "making money" - for years the Nexus products were GSM only except for one model: the original Galaxy Nexus which had CDMA support on Sprint and Verizon. Over the years as Google designed more devices they fell back to strictly GSM once more for several models and one could surmise it hurt them in several respects but most of all in sheer potential for profit. Now that they've partnered up with Verizon they're getting paid for the devices that Verizon orders for their own customers even if - for a period of time - nobody buys them at all (and not a lot of people are, unfortunately). Sprint apparently wasn't interested or simply chose to pass on the possibility of partnering again with Google for a device. The probable reason might be because they took a look at the Pixel devices and realized they're being priced at a premium point and compared to some competing devices out there (OnePlus 3 and now the 3T and some others) that offer similar specs but cost a lot less so consumers will probably choose those and leave Sprint (and potentially Verizon) with a bunch of phones they just can't sell and will have to return to Google at some point to get their own money back.

Either way Google was making an attempt to get more of their self-designed hardware out there to a wider audience and so far from what I've seen (and asked about) the Verizon Pixel devices just aren't selling very well. When I talked with a friend who manages a Verizon B&M corporate store here in Las Vegas he said - and I think I mentioned this earlier in this thread - his store had sold like 1 or 2 Pixel phones since they started stocking them. He even laughed that the Moto Z was outselling the Pixel devices at his location which he found to be a bit odd because he personally can't stand the Moto brand anymore since Lenovo took over completely. Can't say that I disagree with him on that front, the Moto Z has/had potential but the lackluster mods for it and their crazy ass pricing have ruined the Moto line once more so good job, Lenovo.

Stupid craigslist moment of the day: someone posts a "Really Blue" Pixel device for $500 and then someone else posts an add saying they want to buy any Pixel device for $500 - and never the twain shall meet... ;)

Of course it's the Verizon model so someone is chimping out on their contract more than likely to get some quick cash for whatever reason (like people need one I suppose).

My point is, over the years shopping in carrier stores, and the few that sold Nexus phones, I recall the Nexus being plane Jane, but always so buttery smooth and fast in the store, and the hot phone of the year, be it Samsung or HTC, or LG always had some micro stutter, or slight lag.

Back in the Nexus-S days that Nexus was smoooooth, and the other Android phone's not so much.

Same with the Motorola Nexus 6, on display that Moto 6 was so hot butter smooth and fast, and the current other phones not even close to the same.

And now the Pixel, go to Verizon, play with the Pixel, then play with the S7 Edge or LG G5 or whatever, no other phone in the store seems to perform as warp speed fast, but also just so smooth and lag free.

I have done that and yes I'm well aware of the fact that a pure Android device will have a better user experience in terms of smoothness and speed of operation - remember me, the guy that commented on the OnePlus One now having CM14.1 nightlies a few days ago and you then followed up yourself with your own OnePlus One now with Android 7.1 on it courtesy of CM14.1 and how insanely smooth it runs even considering it's a quad core from 2 years ago? :D

I get it, I really do, and yes I'm well aware of how terrible the custom UIs are, TouchWiz, LG UX, etc. I just had another G4 the other day back from LG repair to fix the known boot loop issue, running Android 6.0.1 and after a fresh reset and a few hours to settle down I ran Antutu on it - it's powered by the 6-core Snapdragon 808 so it should give me scores in the 65-75K range and I got... 55K which was really disappointing. Then I ran Antutu on my OnePlus One with the Snapdragon 801 (2+ year old quad core that does run at a higher clock speed technically) and got... 65K. Comparing the CPU scores directly the OPO got 26K and the G4 got 14.5K so, either LG crippled the 808 in this fixed device (which I sold already so that's that) to keep it from having boot looping problems in the future or something else was modified because I had a G4 last year (a Sprint model) and was routinely getting 72-75K on Antutu.

Yeah, I know, benchmarks don't matter in the long run suffice to say I know where the smoothness comes from most of the time: the resolution. The OPO and all OnePlus devices so far including the 3T which was just announced and already available is going to be "God tier" as the kids like to say because it maintains that use of an FHD aka full HD 1920x1080 display - I don't say "1080p" because that's a video format, 1920x1080 is a video resolution, two different things entirely and yes god dammit the details matter. :D

Anyway, because of that Snapdragon 821 coupled with that 1920x1080 panel the performance on that will most assuredly be "God tier" and I'd love to get one personally. It's AMOLED so it's going to suck outdoors in bright sunlight - this OPO and the LTPS LCD display panel is the best outdoor viewable panel I've ever used, it is insanely bright when needed, brighter than anything else I've ever tested outside. I can't stand QHD displays with that ridiculous 2560x1440 resolution because it just kills performance whether companies and testers want to admit it or not, it just does and on the G4 while the UX from LG isn't all that great the QHD resolution is what murders the visual response which translates into jaggy stuttering crap. I wish someone had made a FHD replacement panel for the G4, I would have done that swap in a split second. :)

I honestly just love this OnePlus One, I regret having taken so long to get one actually. After a few hours of using it when I got it a few weeks back, it was like "Ok, this is awesome. Great sound quality overall even though I don't like the EQ app it comes with, the dual mono speakers definitely push the audio level to more listenable levels without distortion, the screen-off gestures for the camera, music control, flashlight, all phones should be doing this... great battery life (even though I do need to replace it since it's the original one), absolutely fantastic display panel, butter smooth performance on the stock CM13.1.2 ROM and now with the CM14.1 nightlies it should get even better once they work most of the kinks out, etc etc..."

Pretty amazing device, I'm just late to the party this time but dammit I'm here now. :D

Just my quick 2 cents... Ive used nothing over the years but Samsung all the way from the S3 release to my Note 7 (yes, I know, OMG FIRE). I have had every Samsung flagship Verizon carried. After my replacement Note 7 was deemed a hazard, I picked up a Pixel XL and have never been so satisifed with a phone. It is so damned quick and smooth. I actually never realized how bad Samsung devices stuttered just from swapping to my next home screen. Battery life, as stated before me, is great. I recommend anyone to atleast try it.

I won't add to the IOS vs Android lifetime debate. Props to Apple for a "water resistant" Iphone though, finally.

My order has been in processing for the longest time, after contacting Google, they have no idea whats going on either, just asked me to wait few more days, even though it supposed to be delivery a week ago already.

This is not quite acceptable to be honest.

I do find it odd some of you are waiting 1 month + to even receive shipped notifications. I picked mine up in store since I have Verizon. Atleast none of them have burnt any houses down......yet.

Last year the Black Friday deal was $70 off on the Nexus 5X ...
Speaking of black friday and Nexus, what happened to all the deals this year? Last year the 6 was on fire sale by now. This year ZERO deals for the the 6p or 5x.

The 5x is now at a point where LG just admitted the boot loop fault and they simply don't have enough of the parts to fix all the devices people are attempting to have repaired so, I think it was just yesterday (November 24th) when they officially announced they're basically giving up and offering refunds to 5x owners. I feel that's pretty drastic but if that's what they feel they have to do to appease people so be it. More info at:

http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-faulty-nexus-5x-refunds-732024/

I honestly don't know what the hell is going on with LG and the boot loop issue. I could see one device having a problem (the G3 did in limited quantities) but then the G4 had it (in vast quantities), then the V10 (not so many as the G4) and now there have been a few reports of the G5 having boot loop issues as well on top of the 5x problems.

LG, what are you folks doing wrong? Go back to the G4 design with proper rear control buttons, throw a Snapdragon 821 in it, 64GB+ of onboard storage with the microSD slot still there, the original 16MP camera hasn't been improved upon so far in my opinion, and keep the removable battery so basically an upgraded G4, call it the G4+ or whatever and give us a damned unlockable bootloader - MAKE IT HAPPEN.

I can dream, can't I?

Finally, our Pixel's get delivered tomorrow. Can't wait. Both of our Turbo's are taking a massive shit.

I had the Logitech G2 when it was new. Good phone but I absolutely hated the rear buttons. Found them completely unintuitive and I always had to stop what I was doing, flip the phone over, locate the appropriate button and then continue. The side based volume rockers are just ideal IMHO.

I eventually installed CyanogenMod on it, which took it from good to great, but when the developer working on the G2 port of CM quit with only a prerelease snapshot build available, I decided it was time to sell it and move on.

I've occasionally looked at LG phones since, and I like them, but the G3 and on have just been too big IMHO. I couldn't buy them. That, and custom ROM's are a no go for me now. I've been spoiled by CyanogenMod and Nexus phones, and will never again use a custom ROM Android phone. Vanilla AOSP or bust.

... I always had to stop what I was doing, flip the phone over, locate the appropriate button and then continue.

You're honestly saying you couldn't adapt to that in just a few minutes at most, and you honestly had to flip the phone over and look at where the buttons were just to be able to figure out how to operate it? Seriously? Are the pads of your fingers numb or something, insensitive to touch?

As for the custom ROM thing, well, AOSP is nice yes but it's not the best way to get the best performance from a device. Even the Pixel devices aren't as useful as one might think just from Google's marketing and the reviews - once true custom ROMs with custom kernels allowing for more functionality start coming in, well, I suppose that's all moot now considering your decision to not partake of what's actually possible and just stick with the plain old vanilla AOSP. ;)

I swear, I thought just having the double-tap to wake/sleep (originated by LG with the G2) was the coolest thing ever, but after owning this OnePlus One for a few weeks and getting used to the additional gestures for the camera (draw a circle), music control (two finger swipe = play/pause, right arrow = next, left arrow = previous, v = flashlight, etc) it just makes me wonder what else I could come up with as time passes. Who needs buttons at all with gestures on tap? :D

Got my free Daydream headset today.

Tried it out. Not bad. Was fun to play around with for 15 minutes.

Anyone know if there are any worthwhile apps for it?

Picked up a Pixel Xl last weekend from Best Buy on Verizon. I had considered getting a 3T but then I realized they are a no go on Verizon. I'm extremely happy with my purchase however. This is my first pure Google phone. I've used Samsungs, LGs and HTCs in the past. Honestly the smoothness and software experience of this phone is unbelievably good. Just so smooth and efficient. I don't know if I'll ever go back to a branded phone again. Oh and the battery life is just superb. Sure the phone isn't perfect. Too much bezel and lacking water resistance, but actually USING the phone is so intoixcatingly good that those omissions are quickly overlooked. Best phone of the year IMO if money is not a consideration.

I was planning on picking one up this week. I have a Samsung Gear VR for my s7 edge and I found some pretty entertaining things on their store. Are there not a lot of store options inside the daydream yet?

There seem to be plenty of options, but very few free ones. I don't want to just blindly buy apps hoping one might be good.

One thing I've found that doesn't work quite well is the bluetooth between my Pixel and Uconnect in my truck. I have the 8.4AN system in the truck running the latest software version. It'll connect, but streaming audio only lasts about 2-3 songs then goes dead. Same thing with a phone call. It'll work for 5 minutes then go dead. I literally have to shut off the truck in order for Uconnect to disconnect the phone. Throw my sim back in my old Droid Turbo and it works perfectly, no problems at all. Pixel, not so much. Doesn't matter if I'm using the Pandora app built in to UConnect or the app on my phone. Any bluetooth streaming causes UConnect to get all locked up. Tried my wife's Pixel and it does the same thing.

Really a disappointment since I use Pandora and iHeart Radio apps built in to UConnect all the time. I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point. If I can't get it working I might sell my Pixel.

I have GM's MyChevy on my Volt. It's not even as good as UConnect IMHO, for when I had a Fiat for a little while. This is when I was still using a HTC M8. But I made it work. There were a lot of weird compatibility issues and audio art not being in sync. But generally if you just use Bluetooth mode instead of bringing up the Pandora app in the system, it would work. Sure, you now have to use your phone to control everything instead of using the infotainment system, but is that really a negative?

Next year when Bluetooth 5 comes out, I think CarPlay and Android Auto should really benefit from extra speed and bandwidth, too bad audio is still the same compression rate. I can't assume if CarPlay will be BT5 compatible though; I don't know if Apple prefers wired and wifi direct for bandwidth alone, or if it's audio quality is a big deal to them.

Well, I am here to chime in on Google's customer support...

I bought a Rhinoshield Crashguard to protect form accidental drops due to the phone's slippery design (as my hands get very dry in the winter months, the phone is kind of slippery). Anyhow, I ended up dropping the phone from 3 feet onto a smooth concrete floor and the screen cracked.

I did not purchase the device protection from Google but am willing to pay the cost to replace the screen... Within reason. As it turns out, Google doesn't do any out of warranty repairs (even if you are willing to pay). The guy told me to look at "Mom and pop," repair shops...

I hung up from that call and did some searching on the Google store support site and found this page.
https://support.google.com/store/answer/7182296?hl=en

So I ched out Youbreakifix who would replace my screen for $180 CAD. The catch is they don't offer mail in service in Canada like in the US... The closest store is in Toronto wich is almost 3 hours away... On the support page they list a company called SBE. They are closed today, so I'm going to call tomorrow...

I called a local Samsung authorized cell phone repair store to see if they can do the repair. They said $420 and it isn't an OEM replacement screen...

So, I'm back to my trusty Samsung Note 5. It's hard to justify $420 for a non-OEM replacement screen... I hope this SBE company can do something.

This whole experience has me seriously re-consider any loyalty to Google and their Pixel phones... I was going to get a Google home when it comes out next year in Canada... That doesn't seem too likely now... I like Android better than IOS but this phone from a hardware and support isn't a worthy iPhone competitor... If I was actually able to get a UAG case, my phone likely would have been safe but since case selection has been so sparse...

Anyhow... It's my fault I dropped my phone. I get it, glass breaks when you drop it and that isn't and shouldn't be covered under warranty, however it's the lack of useful repair options... It is my understanding that Apple will fix a broken screen on a phone that isn't under warranty if you pay them.... That's all I'm asking for...

So, let me get this straight: you bought a case (bumper but even so) that supposedly protects against accidental drops - and their website apparently loves to preach just how awesome their cases are, protecting eggshells and shit, I mean really - and you dropped the Pixel or Pixel XL since I don't know which one you have and in just a 3 foot drop onto concrete with the Rhinoshield case on it (I'm making an assumption here since you did not specifically say the case wasn't on the device) and the screen shattered anyway?

Hell, I think I'd be raising a ruckus with RhinoShield more so than Google at this point, what a crock of shit plastic that turned out to be, geez. Bumper "cases" are fucking useless IMO after having seen so many people end up with destroyed devices and drops onto various surfaces of 3 feet or less. $25 for a piece of rubberized material with bloated BS claims of protection, I'd be all over that seriously. :p

If the case wasn't on the phone at the time it was dropped well, shit, I guess all that was useless to say. :D

What kills me is RhinoShield has a video on YouTube with the tagline that says "Come get your bumper and never break your phone again!!" right there in the description of the video (you'll have to load the link directly to see the description):

Disclaimer: I just got myself a Droid Turbo 2 and that of course has what Motorola claims to be a shatterproof display since it's 5 layers of composite plastics, there is no glass substrate of any kind in the display assembly, and of course I just had to test it when I got it (used, from craigslist). Upon paying for it from the seller I literally threw the phone against a concrete wall not 10 feet from us, fairly hard - the look on the guy's face was worth the cost of the phone alone I swear. Hit the wall, chipped the wall noticeably and had a piece of the concrete fly off from it, then fell to the ground still powered on to the home screen. Picked it up, threw it again at another facing wall, again the look of horror then the guy bust out laughing and called me crazy then walked away. Picked it up, some scrapes and scuffs on the aluminum frame as expected but no damage of any kind to the display assembly at all.

While I'm not too happy about it being a Verizon only device (I had to jump through hoops to get it working on T-Mobile even in spite of it being a factory unlocked GSM device) it does work fantastic with them. Verizon is skirting the law with doing some underhanded crap and layered device locking even in spite of the Federal law that prevents them from doing so that they had to agree to years ago during the FCC auctions - it's a lame practice but there doesn't seem to be anything people can do about it.

Suffice to say this Droid Turbo 2 has impressed me considerably in terms of being rugged and taking a beating, literally. Only thing missing is proper root and an unlocked bootloader but of course Hell will fucking freeze over, melt, destroy reality, freeze over a second time then outlast the Universe before that happens. :)

Canon that sucks sorry to hear that. Did your Pixel have a tempered glass screen protector, or just naked ?

To clarify, my 128gb Pixel XL was in a Rhino shield Crash guard. No screen protector and fell from around 3 feetn on to a flat clean concrete floor.

The screen broke because all of the force of the impact was put on the edgea of the screen because of how the case is designed. The screen didn't it's self touch the floor.

I almost 100℅ bet that my Spigen rugged armor or tough armor cases would have protected the phone better.

Anyhow I'll post a quick update when I get a chance to talk to SBE tomorrow about a repair.

Yeah, I got that the screen itself didn't come into direct contact with the concrete floor, that much is pretty obvious considering the bumper case but when you look at that video I linked to that's always the result: getting a phone to drop and land perfectly flat on a flat surface is almost impossible and it's always going to hit/impact/land on a corner edge probably 99% of the time which is precisely what a bumper case is supposed to absorb. Apparently in your situation it didn't matter that you had the bumper case or not and it would have shattered regardless.

In that video the iPhone they're drop testing never lands screen first, it's always off a corner or edge which again is a practical reality. I'm not saying that the iPhone itself provides better protection for the display assembly but perhaps it actually does and the bumper case there just increased that by a small margin considering how your example apparently was exactly the opposite result and nowhere near the distance they dropped the iPhone from.

Regardless, it sucks that it happened but I would honestly let RhinoShield know of the experience just the same.

Contacted SBE. They do ship in repairs, so I'll be sending it to them for an estimate of the repair cost and hopefully get the screen replaced. They use OEM replacement screens and are an authorised repair centre for Google in Canada.

Anyhow, regarding Rhinoshield and, "Letting them off the hook..." They have the standard fine print that every case manufacturer has. They have no liability for damage to the phone. All I can do is let others know of my experience, so that they may set their expectations accordingly.

Well yeah, legally you can't do much. But you absolutely can/should contact them and others regarding their shitty product.

I picked up a Pixel on Monday. My first android product. So far so good. I bought a couple cases too.

Is this Google's or HTC's issue with the Pixel XL being out of stock ?

- Google website store, shows sold out across the board on the XL, just says will e-mail you in the future when available next year.

- Verizon shows it's back ordered for two months !!!

- BestBuy removed the XL version from it's website recently, only selling the small Pixel currently.

So it seems either A; the Pixel XL has been extreme popular, especially on Verizon, with BestBuy and the Carrier stocking them and selling it. Now was it so hot it's just out of stock for a while ? Or B; Is this the typical Google BS with their Nexus line having these same issues before. I recall the Nexus 4 being sold out for like 5 or 6 weeks straight, back around the December January timeframe. Same with the Nexus 5.

I understand a hot new phone release will be difficult to get the first month or so after release. Even iPhone's are very hard to get the exact one you want for maybe two months after release. But the Pixel has been out 3 months now, and is out of stock now more than when it first released. Just strange. Is HTC having a hard time keeping up with demand ? Or did Google underestimate the demand this phone would have ?

There are some technical problems with the Pixel devices at this time and they seem to be cropping up steadily so it's entirely possible that Google simply yanked them from sales until the issues are addressed in some manner. They won't outright admit they would have done such an action, of course, but it's pretty likely. I know people like the devices but they simply are not selling anywhere near levels that would have them sold out for such extended periods of time.

Anyone using one of these as primary phone would really like to here impressions on the hardware and software.

Does anyone know why BestBuy officially stopped selling the Pixel XL ? Their website says product discontinued or something ? But they still sell the tiny Pixel.

I went to BB today, asked a cell phone salesperson about the XL he said Best Buy took that product off the system and they no longer offer it.

I asked if they'll get it back in the near future ? He said he wasn't sure.

This sucks, because I got a crap load of BB gift certificates for Christmas and I had a few left over from my Birthday totaling $350 now, and was gonna purchase a Pixel XL outright, but tyry don't sell the phone anymore.
