Windows 10 Informs Chrome And Firefox Users That Edge Is “Safer”

Microsoft has turned on a new set of Windows Tips to remind Chrome and Firefox users on Windows 10 that Edge is a “safer” browser. This could be regarded “as poor practice, as Google and Mozilla don’t have the option to do the same in Windows 10 if they want to highlight the strengths of Chrome or Firefox, respectively.”

Reddit user by “illCodeYouABrain” noted the prompt happened when launching Firefox, although not every time. We confirmed with Microsoft that the same “tip” was active for Chrome as well. In July, a Microsoft spokesperson told us that “these Windows Tips notifications were created to provide people with quick, easy information that can help them enhance their Windows 10 experience.” This time, the spokesperson added that Windows 10 users can always change default settings and preferences, including turning off these notifications in their system’s settings (for those interested, open the Settings app => System => Notifications => Disable “Get tips, tricks and suggestions as you use Windows”).

While I am not sure if it should be legal or not for your os to "bug" you that other browsers are not as safe so use the one the company wants I know it's 100% wrong morally. What I want to know is will the os tell you if there is a safer option than edge? If not then it's just scare tactics and that should be illegal.

I disagree- every time I hit an Alphabet site in Edge I get a banner asking me to install Chrome. Usually it says it's faster, but it has a few messages (that I don't read). Funny part is, Chrome is on the system.

Seems in rather poor taste and something quite unfair for third party browsers.

From a vulnerability management standpoint it is safer although there is a bit of marketing speak going on here. A consumer running windows 10 will be 'safer' running edge as Windows 10 forces updates and thus the browser is also receiving those updates. Chrome/Mozzila not being Microsoft means a user has to update them when prompted.

I can only assume that Edge knows that is actually less secure and is lying to make itself feel better just like humans do. AI is getting better I see.

Run Linux... then Chrome and/or Firefox Opera Konqueror Midori GnomeWeb Lynx or any other browser you can find will update themselves with your system. If MS wasn't evil they could have included an official update for major software developers within update, they added WHQL drivers what back around Windows 7. Not saying they should include updates for beta or developer channels and every little piece of software(that would be nice though).... a program for companies like google to submit patches for stable software like whql would have made Windows 10 feel a bit more like a modern OS instead of what it is... windows 7 + popup adds and MS Cloud Spy/MalWare. After being on Linux for awhile and getting used to my system just updating every piece of software I have installed for me, the idea of manually updating anything just seems so dated.

Does not bother me either morally or in any other fashion. If people are not sure of what they want to use by now........ It is their OS just as Android is Google's OS and iOS is Apples OS. You do not see them pushing Microsoft products but their own stuff, right? Hey, level the playing field or let everyone do it.

Unfair? Sorry but, Chrome and Firefox both can add alerts in Windows 10 as well, Microsoft does not need to hand hold them or bend to them.

If only it showed the tip on start up on how to go back to windows 7 for those poor folk that were tricked into installing that malware.

The OS should be concerning itself with managing memory requests, file access etc rather than spreading propaganda. It is my hardware running my choice of software, i do not need such resources being redirected to performing some useless task that ACTUALLY slows down my work running large simulink simulations

essentially you are defending Windows10 going beyond an operating system

Another desperate tactic because no one is using their latest half-baked browser. Safer?

It already is, deal with it.

The last update on Windows 10 tried to make edge my default.

I just changed it, took about 5 seconds.

Yeah Right!

Oh, Maybe they think that so few people use Edge, No One will bother to try to Hack It?

Well, it is true that the most common platforms are going to be the target for attacks.

Since no one uses Edge, that might actually make it safer.

I've tried out Edge a few times in the past, but I'm too lazy to migrate a lot of things over.

It really did not seem to be a bad browser, but Microsoft has never had a reputation for a good browser to begin with.

But that is common knowledge, edge could be the greatest browser in the world and a lot of people would not go near it from some performance in the past.

I have only pissed around with it a few times, usually I like new stuff.

So people without windows 7 install disk/usb drive, who couldn't figure out how to revert when they had the chance and never back up their computer?

the GUI goes beyond an OS. An EDITOR goes beyond OS. There's all kinds of shit that you use daily that comes with your OS (even if it's Linux) that's not part of the OS. Let's be clear, consumers wouldn't by an OS that only did OS things.

I use it occasionally, but for the most part I just use Firefox. About the only time I use chrome is when I want to music to my stereo.

Really, this is only fair. Google web pages have been telling people to "Upgrade" to Chrome for years now. Especially annoying when I've been using a Nightly release of Firefox.

I guess I haven't seen Google doing this lately, but they were definitely doing it.

Same, and I tried using Edge as my daily driver, too many issues with stuttering performance.

Yea, like normal people that aren't us that make up 99% of the user base.

Get off of 10 people, it's a disaster. 8 and 7 are still supported. The faster their 10 user numbers drop the faster we can get a proper successor to 7.

Only fair? Google is a free website. If I dont like Google I can go elsewhere. Windows 10 is an OS you paid for (or you downgraded a paid-for 7/8 license). It is not acceptable for there to be ads on the desktop.

Again, people, stop putting up with this crap. You have options.

I would advise you to not move the goalposts when you are trying to make a point. Such notifications provides no value to the end user, it is value to MS to push their own software. Such notifications, such monitoring takes a finite resource which I could be making use of... "oh it's only 0.01% what are you complaining about" it is still MY resources and any redirection impacts

Lets use a nice car analogy... It would be like Ford including a fuel sensor to check who's fuel you filled up with "its not ESSO so let's warn the user". This user now has to carry this sensor around which costs fuel

I would say you have a point except edge is on the OS from the start. People may not even INSTALL those browsers due to the alerts/messages (What ever you want to call them).

As much of a MS support as I am, I completely agree that things like this (and the start menu store adverts) are going to far.

I completely support and like the MS store (wish more apps were in there) but the OS should be a platform to run applications not an advertising platform. Leave that for the apps in question or store apps. OS notifications should be for notifications about what I have installed and things that are happening... not advertisements or sudo PAs.

Oh please; ever try using goggle services with Firefox or edge? Constant bombardment from Google Ads about swapping to the faster browser. In this fight, Firefox is the only one that gets to complain.

Using Google services is a choice. Getting pestered by popup notifications in the OS is not. The difference really shouldn't be so hard to grasp.

Popup nag spam begging people to use MS's shitty, half baked WinRT/XAML based browser is going a little too far.

Maybe MS should've focused on making more compelling software with must-have features (consequently the entire crux of the windows app store's failure) so they wouldn't have to nag/beg/force-install all their new forever-beta crap in this metro era of suck.

If that occured when going to Bing or Microsoft.com (ie the browser and their own JS does the work) then sure, seems reasonable... BUT they are not

Why is it that all Microsoft's experience enhancing features are in fact annoyances and outright hindrances? All my tools are 3rd party based, there is no Microsoft tool that I find useful, even the Explorer, I use Total Commander for navigation and file management.

Normal people don't bitch about all the crap people on here bitch about, because they don't use that stuff. And normal people have install media (unless they're pirating windows, in which case WGAF about them?). Also, if normal peole aren't backing up, that's really on them. Not backing up is fucking stupid...which reminds me, I need to back up ;)
