[Newegg]PowerColor RED DEVIL RX 480 8GB 190usd (AR+25usd cash back) [+Free Civilization VI]

That's a deal not only on price but also an in demand AAA title.

How well does Civ IV run on the 480 compared to 1060?

LOL, the $15 rebate form lists a 6950 card. Didn't know they still sell those.

I wouldn't get it. Turns out, it's the worst made RX 480. Reference RX 480's are better.

I just picked up my Gigabyte 1060 min 6gb $239... figures this deal would come along. But i think i made a great choice.

The card works just fine. I should know, I own one. You don't need uber-overclocking components if you're not planning to overclock it beyond its factory OC.

I wonder if two of these would be better than a single 1070 in VR titles?

I could be wrong, but last I checked multi-GPU does not work at all with VR? Mayube that has changed since?

Either way, it is always better to go with a single more powerful GPU over two less powerful ones.

Does that mean you'll be just as happy to play it on a Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM and a GTX 8800?

I know it's not a competitive FPS, but performance still matters.

Performance does matter, and yes, given the choice, I'd have the higher performance, but the truth is, Civ games are perfectly playable at 15fps. You'll get a little skipping when scrolling, but it isn't horrible.

I actually FPS limited mine to 30, as I felt I wasn't gaining much from a full 60fps and I'd rather my computer were perfectly silent.

Adjust your fan profiles then. Why leave free performance on the table when you can set fan curves and temps to your desired level?

If you watched the video, he explains that it limits power and if you run FurMark with the firmware update you'll probably melt the VRMs. The point of buying a non reference designed card is for improvements, and this card is certainly worse over reference. It's not a matter of how high you can overclock, but how long it'll last at even stock speeds before the VRMS melt.

So with the firmware update you can run a powerhog utility that doesn't represent typical gaming loads in any way and it could potentially damage the card? I'm pretty sure I could go out to my car in the parking lot and sit there with the throttle floored until the engine exploded. Does that mean the engine was under designed and won't last for normal driving conditions?

You're not going to melt the VRMs just gaming. This is getting ridiculous. Don't run Furmark and don't try to overclock it to the moon and it should be fine. If you like playing Furmark or want to try to highly overclock an RX480, buy a more expensive version.

I do the same thing, I can push a lot of the games I play to 150+ fps, but why put the extra heat and stress on components, and the extra power draw from the wall when 60 is just fine as it is.

I did not say to disable vsync or set a frame limit. He was specifically mentioning 30fps limit which is bleh, IMO and as I said he can get the benefit of 60fps while still maintaining a silent PC.

Titan Kepler really wasnt anything special R9 290X beat it

I thought it was fantastic.

You seem to forget that the Titan was launched a full 8 months before the 290x. In many other years I would have already upgraded before the 8 month mark.

Overall the Titan lasted me 2.5 years. No GPU has ever lasted me that long before.

Sure the 780ti and 980 beat it, but only by a little bit. It remained relevant for longer than any other GPU I can remember.

I bought it at launch, and while I had some buyers remorse at first, for having been irresponsible and spent a grand on a GPU, long term it wound up being a fantastic purchase.

if you compare performance now and then GTX Titan Performance now and then GTX Titan is below R9 290 when it was around 290X performance

Yeah, for all the flak AMD takes about its drivers, they have kept up with performance optimizations for the older architectures better than Nvidia have.

Then again, this may be because they are still selling that same architecture in the 390, so they don't have a choice.

Any solutions / mods?

Just got a 470 one of these, it's for a 4k (vids) htpc with some lite (1080p upscaled) gaming.

(also own an evga 1080ftw, i'm on a roll)
