I am totally cool with this as long as you can edit your sound profile with custom exhaust sounds, kinda like ring tones for electric cars. Imagine your Prius sounding like a supercharged big block. :D

Under the rule, all hybrid and electric light vehicles with four wheels and a gross vehicle weight rating — the maximum operating weight of a vehicle, including passengers, driver, and cargo — of 10,000 pounds or less will be required to make noise when going forward or backwards at speeds up to 19 miles per hour. They’re not required to make a noise over that threshold because at higher speeds, other factors, like tire and wind noise, provide adequate audible warning to pedestrians, NHTSA explains.

I thought this was already required. My eGolf makes engine sound at low speed and I thought all the other electrics did, too.
There are even some gas cars that make fake sounds at low speed.

VW calls it a soundaktor. I don't know what other manufacturers call them.

I vote no. I Don't want my car making any noise. I will have to disable this idiotic feature with my trusty wire snips and black electrical tape over the alert LED.

I hear noisy bubba trucks with their glass packs or whatever they call them now-a-days.

Is this a protester-friendly feature?

VWs soundacktor is only for the passengers. It does not broadcast outside the vehicle.
On mine, an e(v)Golf, the Soundaktor creates engine noise at low speeds so people know I'm driving near them. I don't hear it inside the cabin.

Yea, its a thing nowadays. The ironic thing is BMW's fake sound vs Porsche's real sound.

At which point it will likely turn you in. Be interesting to see how that coming battle turns out. I can only imagine some level of government will be salivating over the thought of cars with real-time telemetry. Congestion changes for driving downtown during prime-time, self-reported speeding tickets, etc... Gonna be a market for some kind of car "jailbreak."

Wow, 372 pages for 1 rule! Didn't read the entire document but appears to only apply to EVs with 4 or more wheels. So a Chevy Bolt will have to make noise but the EV Harley won't.

heh, the Harley EV is going to make extra noise.

This is my choice. I use it for a ring tone.

Why? Dipshits wearing headphones will still get run over randomly stepping out into traffic. Even if it is under 19 mph traffic.

So science fiction art directors have been proven prophetic... all those silly futuristic car sounds where just coming out a speaker. I also want mine to sound like a Jetsons flying car.

When these hit the road it will be fun to see how long it takes some 400lb basement dwelling teen to figure out how to hack them and replace those cool sports car vroom vroom sounds with jalopy sounds. Or make it sing things like this.

This is stupid for two reasons:
1) pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings, and shouldn't have to rely on cars being noisy
2) it should be Congress making this law, not a bunch of bureaucrats

My plan is to hack mine to play Tupac's California Love at low speeds, looping and about 10x the required volume. Dunno why, but that's been my plan since I heard about this idea a few years back. Requiring electric cars make noise is very silly, it's not like anyone has ever done any real studies on this.

A Prius making V8 noises is still just a Prius. Equivalent to strapping paper between the spokes of your bicycle to make flapping noises while you drive.

What wrong with looking where you are walking now?
Have people become so focused on thier phone screen now ?

But then again i took my wife to Denmark last xmas and the issues she had with bike lanes >.<
