All but certain that won't really work. One needs a PAL VHS player to play PAL media.

You will need a PAL or multisystem player to play it back.
Back in the day, a lot of european players could play NTSC tapes but not too many NTSC players could play PAL tapes.
Panasonic had a mulitsystem converting player, it could play any tape and output any format, I think it could even convert the signal coming in on the AV IN as well.

this is the unit, AG-W3

The original one was the AG-W1,

There are slightly cheaper options.

I would assume you get a video capture device that accepts RCA input and go from there?

He could use that to play the tape but he will need a capture device that can capture PAL.
That deck outputs the format of the tape, doesn't convert the signal, so play a PAL tape it outputs PAL, NTSC - NTCS, etc.

once you get the video into the computer, you can do whatever you need to it, and burn an NTSC DVD.

The first one I linked from eBay would work wouldn't it? Multi system VCR -> converter -> RCA capture device?

I have a few capture devices I am not using anymore, Matrox RT2000, Matrox RT.X100, and Matrox RT.X2. The first 2 are limited to Windows XP and the RT.X2 is up to Windows 7 only.
I'd sell them cheap if you needed one. the RT.X2 does HD but is a full length PCI-e card so needs a large case to accommodate it, still have the Antec Titan case we used it with.

oh wow. If this was more PC related id totally invest the time and money but its not so I won't. :D

Just gonna pay a local shop to do the conversion and DVD transfer for me. :p

Thanks for the help guys.

A bit late to the game, but Costco offers transcoding services.

When you say movies, do you mean home video or cinema? If its the later, cant you just find them in the proper format?

He says Home Movies shot in Germany, so I am guessing it's home video.

Good question.

I also have some pal VHS content that I would like to convert to DVD. Any experience with Costco service? I pretty sure they do the NTSC, but nothing about the pal.
