Curved vs. Flat monitors

Gents,

It's time for a mew monitor, and I'm considering one of the Samsung curved monitors, this one to be specific:

I'm running a Sapphire R9 380X 4GB vid card, so 1980 x1880 res is just fine for me.

I do a decent amount of gaming; Fallout and Far Cry mostly.

I see that the curved screens are supposed to be great for gaming, but what about general browsing/surfing. Are there any Pros/Cons for that?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
 
you wouldn't notice much of a difference at that size. The only time you need a curve is when you get closer to 40" or above. In those cases, If the monitor uses TN or VA panel (which has narrower viewing angle than IPS) Having a curve screen will minimize any color shift towards the edge of the screen.

I have a curved 34" and I love it for both gaming and day-to-day work and general web browsing. I wouldn't bother with the curve on a 27" though. If the screen is too small, the curve is distracting. On a wider screen, the curve disappears when you're using it.
 
Depends on how close you are. If you have the screen close to you or the screen is very big as mentioned above the mild curve will help to reduce horizontal gamma shift VA panels have.

I have 34'' Samsung curved screen with VA panel so , probably it helps with viewing angles but otherwise I would not bother with curve on smaller monitor.
 
Another vote for "don't bother at that size".

About the only time the curve is a real negative is if it's very sharp and you're doing photo editing work.
 
I have the Samsung 34" curved and I really enjoy it. Not sure how well the 390x will drive it, but the price has come down significantly from when I bought it.

Yeah, the 380X is good enough for MY purposes.

Another thing is that 34" will be way too big, as in the next couple of months or so, this system will be residing in my motorhome and I will be living full time in it traveling around the country at my leisure.

I went ahead and ordered the one in my OP.

I waned a Samsung monitor and one with AMD Freesync capability. With those qualifications, the only choice within my budget was a curved screen.
 
I'm so so about my curved display. On one hand it's definitely is immersive - whether that's because it's an ultra wide X34 or because of the curve, I'm not sure.

What I can say however, is that the curve bends all the lines on the screen which I find odd. In fact, it make me feel a bit sick for a few weeks until I got used to it.
I also do some design and drafting ( non professional) which makes me more aware of the issue. Friends who use the display don't notice this until I point it out.
If it was flat I wouldn't be unhappy - I'm not itching to change either.... It's just different.
 
Love the X34. I'd like to see a 40-43" Gsync 4k, I can't really see upgrading beyond that. I was going to go the 4k Samsung TV route but I really just don't feel like losing Gsync. I just hope Nvidia makes it more accessible in their next generation of displays, FreeSync is really killing them right now in terms of how many displays are using it.

FreeSync doesn't require any proprietary hardware in the display or licensing fees, hence why FreeSync displays are so much cheaper. Nvidia makes money off every display that uses Gsync, and that's not going to change... so it's not likely to get cheaper any time soon.

I guess my next question is though, how well is FreeSync doing sales wise?
 
Well, the new monitor arrived today. Assembled it. Got it hooked up.

Didn't play with the settings all that much. Petty much 'out of the box' except I chose 'Gaming Mode' and set Freesync to ON.

Fired up Fallout 4 and......

Ho Lee Fuc! "I'm seein' things I ain't NEVER seen before". (points if you know that reference :) )

It's like a whole new game. I thought it looked good with the old monitor, but this is a whole new universe!

The old Samsung LS24A350 was a pretty good monitor in it's day (2011), but this new one is AWESOME.

I didn't notice the curved screen all that much while in the game, but It is somewhat noticeable when I'm surfing, etc. I mostly notice it at the bottom of the screen when I'm browsing, but that isn't a game killer, and I'm sure I;'ll adapt in short order.
 
If you can always be in the centre spot cool.
So for PC display, top.
If its communal in any way, either be prepared for dissatisfaction or be prepared to not sit in the centre.


A reeeally large display it probably wont matter for a few people.
