Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Replacement Pads?

Hey all,

I've been using the same set of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's since March 2009.

They still sound great, but the pads are starting to break and come off. Been searching a little bit for replacement pads.

I found this spare parts listing on the Beyerdynamic page, but nothing on there is specifically for the DT 770 pro. (Thre's the 770M, but I understand that is a different headphone all together).

I'm guessing they are the same size as some other model, but I am not sure which ones.

Does anyone have any idea? Or are there any other (cheaper) options?

$35 seems like a lot of money for a set of pads, especially for a 7 year old set of headphones I only paid $149 for originally.

Maybe it's time to replace them all together instead? I always wanted a higher impedance set. I bought these 80 Ohm ones before I really knew what I was doing, and have been wishing I had bought the 250 Ohm set almost ever since.

Thoughts?

these are the right ones.. yeah they cost $35 but whatever.. great headphones worth a new set of pads now and again.

I haven't honestly messed about with cheap replacement pads (tons on ebay from china) ... I'm sure there must be some that sound ok... but probably a lot of them are going to mess with the orig sound.

also... seriously you still have the orig pads from 7 yrs ago... after 1 year (washing a few times in that time) I was well ready for new pads.. I don't mind the $35 ~ annual ~ish cost cause I really dig my Beyerdynamic headphones.

Them velour pads wear out though just the way it is.

Ive washed them a bunch and tried to be careful, when putting them back on, but eventually the plastic lip that goes around the edge started cracking. I ignored it at first as they still stayed on, but now it is evident it's not going to last much longer.

It's interesting you talk about the sound. I didn't realize the pads were an important part of the sound profile. I just thought they were there for comfort.

ew pleather....I bought replacement pads for DT990pro form amazon.ca that are velour and black instead of biege. They were shipped from China and only cost $6.50 CAD so bought two pairs. Took about a month to get here though because they came direct from China.Check these out and then see if they are on amazon.com too.

These are the pads I bought but see they have bumped the price up to $20.99 CAD. I got a good deal at $6.50 per pair.

edit: should have mentioned that these pads are for DT770 and DT990.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Will be checking these out. Still not sure if I should just get a new 250 ohm set, or maybe a different set of headphones all together. I really love these though. Closed circumaural is my thing.

These are really great bang-for-the-buck headphones. Not quite neutral and a little bass-heavy, but really great for hard rock.

If you have an OTL amplifier, then sure get the 250 ohm version, but unless you do I doubt you will hear much of a difference between the two.

I'm not really sure what OTL means, but it seems to be related to tube amps somehow?

I am using the discontinued original Schiit Asgard amp.

Unfortunately their specs are no longer on their webpage (companies really need to learn to keep historical data), but this review on 6moons.com has all the relevant details.

It certainly has the power to drive 250Ohm headphones, but it is not a tube amp.

I should note that my DAC is a 2V source, so I have double the input voltage as the source they used in this review, which throws off their headphone compatibility a bit. I feel like 250Ohm should be well within the capability of this amp, especially considering I am at pain-level volume with the volume pot turned up to only 25-25%

What is your take?

Hi,

Haven't logged in for a while - apologies for the late response.

OTL amps are output transformerless, i.e. no output transformer to decrease output impedance (hope I have this correct). Since you have a higher output impedance, you need headphones with higher impedance. The Bottlehead Crack is a good example - they can run my 250 ohm DT 770s perfectly, but when I use my Shure 440s (think they are 32 or 40 ohm impedance) the bass gets really overblown in a bad way, i.e. loose, flabby, etc.

However, using an amp like the Asgard which has a very low output impedance will allow you to run any set of headphones without issues. There will be a slight decrease in volume if you plug in a 250ohm set vs the 80ohm set, and there may be some small variances in sound, but generally the differences will be minute. Once they are properly volume-matched, I doubt I will be able to hear a difference.

In any case, you should have no problem with either impedance, but if you can't get a 250ohm set, don't worry too much about it.

Don't buy another pair, just replace the pads with the ones I bought.

I decided to do both :p

I got a new set of original pads for my 7 year old 80 ohm set, and I also bought a 250 ohm set. One for mobile listening and one for my new amp.

OK, I would have tried a different headphone myself just for a change in sound signature. But then I did buy Sennheiser HD595, HD558 and HD598 so am no one to talk because all those headphones sound very similar. :)

Only pair I still have out of those three are HD558. Sold HD595 and gave HD598 to someone as a gift.

I'm also planning on ordering the Sennheiser HD6xx massdrop (special HD650's) that starts on Tuesday, so I have one open set and one closed set.

Good choice, thinking of getting in on that deal myself. Although, I already have 2 open headphones and 3 closed.

Well, it may have been a waste.

After a thorough cleaning of the 80Ohm pair, and adding the new pads, I did a back and forth between the 80 Ohms and 250 Ohms. I expected the 250 Ohms to have a lower noise floor and overall sound a little better in part because they aren't 7 years old. After going back and forth a ton, and listening to little details, I can't tell any difference what so ever between the two, other than that the 250Ohm pair requires the volume to be turned up ever so slightly higher to reach the same level.

I will say this though, don't underestimate the effect that worn/old pads can have on the sound. I did not realize this, which is why I was inclined to buy a new set. I thought the pads were mostly a comfort/visual thing. (The old ones were getting kind of gross). I didn't expect them to have much or any impact on the sound, which is why I thought that after 7 years the 80Ohm set were just spent.

After a clean up and new pads, they sound every bit as good as a new pair.

Oh well, at least I have a spare set now :p The 7 year old 80Ohm pair will be used for mobile duty, and as a loaner pair to friends and family, since it can be driven without a dedicated amp.

Cant wait for the Massdrop Sennheiser HD6xx's to arrive for a side by side.

The down side of massdrops is that they aren't built until the drop completes, so it's a make to order, which means they won't arrive until December 25th...

I'm in Canada so wouldn't even get them by Dec 25th. Also, when I ordered my replacement pads it took them a month to get here because they came from China. How you get yours so quick?

That massdrop deal is limited to 5,000 units and saw it even posted on the front page of my google news feed.
