I'm a bit surprised that Hogan actually accepted this deal given that the judgment was for $140 million but, given the fact that he could have gotten less because of the bankruptcy, I can see why he snagged up on the money.

Since Gawker lost its court battle with Hulk Hogan back in June and filed for bankruptcy, it's been unclear just how much the former professional wrestler would get given the massive $140 million judgment awarded him. But today, the media company's cofounder and CEO Nick Denton announced that they've settled with the celebrity for $31 million.

$5 million dollars an inch before lawyers fees.

He's probably setting up the camera again.

He's going to end up getting a little more than just that $31M.

Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, will be getting $31 million from the media company, according to the documents. He will also get a portion of some Gawker media proceeds, including part of its $135 million sale to Univision, which will be split between him and two other defamation lawsuits.

I know Engadget has gone to shit in the last few years but Jesus Christ. The article couldn't be more obviously biased if it was written by Denton himself. It's funny how all of these so-called "journalist" blogs absolutely refuse to acknowledge that Gawker was in the wrong in this case and they deserved to lose. Hogan is a massive douche, but hit pieces are still wrong and Gawker still refused to follow court orders.

Strange feelings about this one... on one side you want to protect free speech and on the other you have people being straight up jerks.

You want the press to be able to publish stories without much oversight, but Hogan's sex life is no real concern to the public besides a salacious story to sell.

I really dislike gawker media and think they are jerks - and am somewhat glad they are out of business - but still, eh I dunno.

According to them (that entire incestuous circle of online bloggers/journalists), look a J-Law's butthole, you're a monster; look at Hogan's dick, you're a freedom fighter.

Gawker Media is not out of business. Gawker Media was purchased by Univision and Gawker.com was shut down. All other Gawker "services" are still running.

If this was a free speech issue, you'd have a point. It's not though. This is an issue of a site publishing a hit piece and then blatantly refusing to take it down after a judge ordered them to. Not only that but they even wrote an article saying they were defying the judge's order, basically throwing the entire thing in the court's face. Endgadget's shitty article glossed over it, but Gawker has a history of this. The shit with the Conde Nast exec and a male prostitute? Gawker's doing. Gawker also outed Peter Thiel as gay for no other reason than because they could. The sex tape they posted with Hogan was recorded illegally as was the recording that supposedly outed Hogan as racist and ended up getting him completely scrubbed from WWE's history books. Exposing who people fuck is not in the public's interest and has no place in journalism. Publishing articles with the express intent of ruining people's lives in NOT a free speech issue.

I would think this types of "rags" would have some pretty hefty insurance policies just for shit like this. And while yeah it would be expensive as all hell... The price of printing trash

The laughable part of all this is that Gawker basically did have a 'get out of jail' free card. All they had to do was take the Hogan sex tape down.

Instead they didn't and like the 'anointed ones' that they are thought they were above the law in their left-slanted crusade. Their own arrogance ruined them.

Its a shame that a certain bullshit artist will use this as vindication of his claims that he invented email.

It's not that Gawker pissed off Hogan, it's that they pissed off a billionaire. Hogan just happened to be the instrument of Thiels wrath.

Gawker did have insurance for this purpose, but Gawker exhausted that insurance long before this lawsuit got under way.

Hogan is the one who initiated the lawsuit. Thiel had nothing to do with that decision. It's funny how a figure like Thiel, who was heralded as a progressive figure in the tech world just a couple years ago, all of the sudden gets thrown under the bus when he starts expressing opinions the media doesn't like. LBGT magazine "The Advocate" went so far as to publish an article stating that Thiel isn't gay because he supports Donald Trump.

I'm all for it. Gawker was a trash rag, and this lawsuit forced the Turds who owned it to sell. Works for me.

The Rock approves this settlement..

Here's the deal, both the hulk and the woman in question, the wife of a at the time fairly famous morning personality on FL radio is news, fair less inane bs get's put out there. And what was occurring actually spoke significantly to the attitude and way women were treated by hulk and the moron morning dj in question. It was news, and in the public interest in markets where the radio show was on.

Good. Hulk better not squander this fortune like he did his last. No investing in your daughters "music" career this time Hulkster.
Even though she was a dumb (but hot) slut, you have to give him props for wanting to invest his fortune in his children's futures though.

That's just good parenting.

Thiel may not have technically filed the suit, but he sure as hell paid for it.

And what do they say of Milo then?
Yiannopoulos? A lot. They have called him a Nazi, white supremacist, "gay white racist," transphobic, "bigoted monster," "half-Jew with jungle fever," "Trump troll with daddy issues..." And that is just the first page of a search.

Haha, thats great. No doubt he wears that like a badge of honor.

I have no love of Gawker, but I don't get why he won this. He's a public figure and AFAIK, nothing they published was false. Truth is PT didn't give a rats ass about Hogan. He just wanted revenge for Gawker outing him and 10 million bucks is chump change.

I don't think releasing private video footage falls under free speech. By that definition publishing movies on youtube would be free speech also.

And the very intent of gawker was to ruin Hogan. And they'd do the the same to anyone who they don't like. So I'm glad they went away. I only wish the rest of the regressive outlets like buzzfeed would go their way too. And just add tyt to that list for good measure.

As a journalistic outlet, Gawker had to prove that the publishing of a private video was in the public interest, which they failed to do. They also had to prove that there was no malicious intent in the posting of said video, which was quite entertaining to watch and hear during deposition. Most famously, the writer of the article accompanying the sex tape, AJ Daulerio, said that the age of 4 was where they would draw the line in determining whether or not the subject of a sex tape was newsworthy. Being a trial by jury, the jury members were not so taken with Daulerio's flippant attitude.

Exactly what public interest does knowing who Hogan is fucking serve? Same with Thiel for that matter. He's gay, big deal. If he wanted to keep that to himself, that's his choice. Public figure or not, consensual sex between adults is no one's damn business except the people fucking and people DIRECTLY affected by it.

And a bail bondsman helps you get out of jail by financing............

And a bank helps you buy a house by financing it..................

There is nothing technical about who initiates the suit, the need for bail, or the housing transaction it is the litigant, the accused, or the buyer. Their source of funding is irrelevant UNLESS (like in this case) you (Denton) can not attack the message that the person brining the suit has made in court. Denton was 100% in the wrong, tried to rub the courts face in and ended up getting his ass handed to him. That is the way the system is SUPPOSED to work. Denton PUBLICLY and REPEATEDLY made his bed....now he gets to sleep in it. The only sad part is he got off so easy.

Well that, and Tavarish is still posting horrible pieces on Jalopnik....

Oh, and that Kinja still exists

Not when you're an entitled twenty something fresh out of college working at Gawker w/ an agenda to push. Glad that place is gone.

I don't see issue with the case itself, they each got what they deserved.

The issue I do have is the hidden Thiel money backing the suit that wasn't revealed until after it was over.

Why? It doesn't make the facts any different, it doesn't make Gawker any less guilty. Who is paying the lawyer is pretty irrelevant. Unless Thiel was bribing the jurors or judge his involvement in the case consists of paying legal fees and nothing else. His involvement only means that Hogan had the money to continue fighting against Gawker. Beyond that it could have been anyone with the money to spare and it would have mattered just as much. Thiel's motives aren't even important.

Yeah, maybe I did not make myself clear earlier. I have no problem with Thiel backing Hogan. His money, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. I was just pointing out that you should always watch your back when you get on a billionaires shit list. :)

Oh I'm not disputing that Gawker was most definitely guilty. And Thiel was perfectly in his right to use his money. However by hiding the money source, it just sets a precedence that if you have enough money you can fight a proxy war with someone you don't like and keep your hands clean. It's used in business and politics where it's frowned upon (and some cases illegal), so I don't see why we should encourage it here. In this case though Gawker deserved to get stepped on, it's future cases I'm concerned where a defendant may actually have something important to protect not get swept under the rug or buried by gag orders.
