Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

well fuck me.... I downloaded the free trial thing this month and played for a whole 15 min... I first spawned into some city with 50 other jackasses and ran around. Explored some shops and what not and was impressed... Was told to relog on what ever the other server was... Right off the bat another player came up to me with some huge ass fucking ship and we took it to some other space station where you could have guns out... I ended up lowering the hanger bay and we both got flung off the station and had to float back. Holy crap its a sale for me even in its buggy ass state.. when i first left the base and walked on the hanger pads I took a min and just stared at the huge planet... I might play tonight but WoW patch 7.1 comes out today and im sure my Friends and I will be in Karazhan.

edit: FWIW I thought the game ran decently smooth with my aging setup. 3570k @ 4.1ghz, 20gb ram, Powercolor 390@2560x1440. I might have to switch the game to my SSD isntead of the HDD, the Load times are kinda long lol

how to I buy the game, or like a "stater pack" or some shit

Don't forget to grab a referral code from somewhere when you sign up for some free in-game currency (5000 UEC). If you don't want to use mine:

Meanwhile, House of the Dying Sun (used to be called something like Enemy Starfighter) has come out of early access on Steam. I got it working with my CH stick+throttle+pedals, it's a fun dogfighter. They do some neat things with sounds and the pacing is quite fast - you play a bad guy, doing hit-and-run missions. Jump in, murder things before the capital ship support arrives to kill you, jump out again. Eventually you get multiple AI-controlled ships in a strike team and can possess any of them. Good stuff.

CitizenCon and the subsequent Free Fly week have added over 100k, yes over one hundred thousand, backers. These are brand new pledging accounts and of course many many more people who signed up to just take advantage of the free fly.

It's cute how hard some try to spin things negatively though. :)

The Loremaster's guide of the Leir system was cool, how long have those been going?

*facepalm* Nevermind, I noticed the episode number at last.

Doesn't help that Loremaker's guide to the galaxy use to be in AtV before being split off, I prefered some of the fan ones that covered systems that stopped a little while after Loremaker/master's started.

As an early backer, I would ask you to please wait until the game is released.

There are many of us who have pledged hundreds of dollars years ago, and the longer this fiasco drags on, the more I wish I hadn't pledged.

There is no tangible benefit to pledging early. It just encourages the developer to keep delaying release when money keeps rolling in.

If you're really intent on pledging early, I would be more than willing to sell you one of my ships at a slight discount.

I have a 300i package with lifetime insurance (LTI)
A MISC Freelancer with LTI
and a Hornet with LTI.

PM me if you're interested.

I also have a Constellation Phoenix that I upgraded from my original aurora pledge that I am wanting to sell. PM me if interested.

Wow- did you see the letter of the week? Posting the internal timelines (admittedly cleaned up a bit) is amazing. If that level of transparency happened elsewhere we'd have...

Well, transparency.

Caterpillar coming in 2.6 :)

IS that an observation pod or something opposite the control pod? Actually, that almost doesn't matter, it's sexy! I was indifferent to the Caterpillar during the description and early sketches, but I really love how it's coming together.

My $20 Andromeda to Cat upgrade just became worth $70. I could nearly upgrade to a carrack from the new Cat price.

I keep wanting to sell my rear admiral LTI account, but everytime I look at the buy/sell reddit, I just go "blegh"

I don't know if anyone else saw, but they bumped the price of the 890 Jump to $900. There goes my rule about not having a ship that is over $600 lol. It sucks some what that you can't really CCU to anything above it though, but it's interesting. I'm guessing they will sell some more this anniversary, or perhaps it got a bit bigger.

The Prowler looks really cool, I'm not sure I'd grab it at that price though. I think it's overpriced like the Vanduul remakes, I'll just wait to get it in game most likely.

Cutlass remake looks really nice, much more aggressive looking plus it holds a Dragonfly it seems. I want the circular door in the bottom back though :(

The price increase follows what they've done with other ships, remember the Starfarer used to cost only $170 and look at the size and quality that thing ended up being. Lower prices of ships in concept stage are essentially a reward for early supporters who stuck their necks out.
The Prowler reminded me of the Marauder from Farscape.
Cutlass remake looks like I always wanted it to look. For a time I considered getting rid of the 2 that I have 'cause I wasn't digging how they looked.

Yeah, Hopefully the 890 has a decent bump in size.

I think the front end of the Cutlass remake is what I like the most. The original concept was similar with the bulldoggish look. Now I have to decide if I want to bump down from the Blue to the Black.

Is it at all playable atm? I was thinking of taking a look at it this weekend. Not sure about the install size or procedures and content level though.

There are still sim races and various dogfights, but the main draw (and probably what you are looking for) is the universe, load up Crusader and you have about a quarter system to run and gun around. There are missions and stuff, but I haven't played with it much myself, due to current hardware issues on my end.

Indeed there its a playable pre-alpha! Right now users can enjoy many game modes including exploring their personal hangars and ships they own, playing Arena Commander which is an instanced "game within a game" where players can play solo, cooperatively, or competitively against each others or computer controlled bots (including those meant to replicate an in-universe enemy, the Vanduul) in dogfights or even racing tracks! There is also the "main" part of the Alpha which is a fully integrated multiplayer experience dubbed the "Mini public universe" where there is shopping, missions to pick up, the ability to spawn ships (including multi-crew ships), fly off to different destinations, perform EVAs (to repair and investigate a satellite, for instance), and engage in some FPS combat and more. Every build expands things quite a bit and in fact the next Alpha 2.6 build will bring with it Star Marine, which is a "game within a game" of the on-foot, hand to hand FPS combat. Note that even as the game matures, Arena Commander and Star Marine will be places where people can try out ships they do not own in the "real" gameworld, and engage in space and FPS combat in a faster more arcade-ish pace as opposed to the slower, more tactical pace of combat with more durable targets set for the public universe.

It is important to be aware that what you see at any given time is only a fraction of what is coming, both in terms of amount of content and its scope. Major changes happen with frequency and add both new dimensions to gameplay as well as alter existing systems. Nothing is set in stone and something you see today and think "meh" can be updated into something amazing. For instance, people watching the livestream with Star Marine combat thought "Does this mean the combat will be this fast? This is like come Call of Duty shooting!" but didn't realize that the game is planned to have a more "ARMA", slower level of play in "real" combat that will likely materialize over time. The very same thing happened in Arena Commander when people saw how quickly ships were destroyed in dogfights and said "How will this work? We'll never be able to disable ships with non lethal weaponry and/or have time to give others a chance to dump cargo etc.. if the whole game is like this!", but were told that the flow of combat in AC would not be the same as the main game . Star Citizen's developers have been very good about being open regarding development and taking the community under advisement, while keeping them informed. They recently took the unprecedented step for a AAA of making internal release schedules and deliverables public ; see - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15603-Letter-From-The-Chairman ! So while there's definitely a lot more to go, there is significant proof and deliverables that show things are on the right track and many of those are playable today!

Any other questions? If you're interested in pledging - even if its just a basic game package - we'd be happy to provide advice. If you're interested, myself and many others here have Recruitment Codes that give you some "real, game world" currency used to permanently buy items for your account, so be sure to pick up one of those. Finally, if you're interested in special ships and those packages with Lifetime Insurance, myself and a few others here have some for sale! This goes for anyone in fact, especially if they want to pick up the newly upgraded (much larger!) "Caterpillar" ship for when they come flyable in Alpha 2.6 - I have a few with LTI for sale! However, remember that all you absolutely need to play is a Game Package that includes a Star Citizen (ie public universe) and Squadron 42 (single/small co-op story based, Wing Commander or Xwing/TIE Fighter like campaign) keys, assuming you want full access to both "halves" of the game universe. Every other ship can be acquired later in the game through play - one of the major elements that sets Cloud Imperium Games apart!

So with the new milestones and schedules...where is Squadron 42? I don't see any mention of it on there.

I guess this is only for the PU?

Wtf people are playing $900 a ship now? People are crazy

I will be sporting my $40 Aurora like a champ! Best be wary of my entry level beast! Yeah. Still cool to just float around in it though.

I do hope it will be at least somewhat doable to upgrade to a decent ship by playing the game. Preferably by winning one in a sabacc game.

Indeed. Remember that these are basically individual JIRA pages and whatnot. While this is still the most radical transparency we've seen from a AAA studio, much less a crowdfunded one that already had a high bar, it doesn't encompass every single plan they have! They've always been more quiet about SQ42 to avoid spoilers and whatnot. This new policy probably will be focused primarily on deliverables and other development that are next to come to the playable alpha, so people can be informed "When is 2.x coming, when is 3.x coming etc".

One of the most important but often overlooked thing about Star Citizen is is that you won't just have the potential for a "decent" upgrade - you can upgrade to ANY in game ship just by playing! The same goes for the vast majority of unique widgets offered to subscribers and backers. In Star Citizen, all you really need is a game key to drop you into the world. Everything else that is being sold is not the "haha optional but you'll be missing out on those cosmetic appearances, or have to buy them from other people who spent real money for them in game" of some other game companies, but the truly optional "You will be able to one day command that same capital ship that some people are paying $2700 to acquire".

There are some minor exceptions (ie Lifetime insurance is the same insurance you have to buy in game with game currency, but just without the premium payment. Literally one or two skins only present for those who were there during the start of - Golden Ticket and end of - Record Breaker - the first 30 days of crowdfunding etc) but aside from that just about everything in the game can be acquired through play. Those who contribute financially are just starting with the exact same items that you can one day buy in game with in-game only currency. Also ships are not simply "better" than each other by design, they're different especially within "weight classes". So you have a bright future ahead of you no matter what your goals in Star Citizen might be; nothing is locked away from you, not even in terms of cosmetics or ships variants (ie want to collect all of those Taketsu in-game models and display them in your Captain's Quarters? Go for it!") - really one of the most impressing things CIG has done. Even some of the other MMOs that I've really found to be be wortwhile (ie Shroud of the Avatar) have fallen short in this regard, putting in lots of fully exclusive items for pay, which is really unfortunate.

Guess i better unmelt my 890 before it goes to 900 in the buy back pledges lol

edit-
done..

Now ill have to unmelt the polaris next month heh

I think most of the prices are fair but the 400+ for a rather small drop ship seems a bit excessive.

Did the x85 go on sale and I missed it? I have been away at work for the past 40 ,or so, days and had little to no internet.

no, its still only with the 890 jump

I am thinking about a CCU to an Endeavor for $50 from my Starfarer, which will carry LTI to the Endeavor.

Question I have is, will it cost me even more, and out the ass possibly to buy the modules for the Endeavor? Since I'll be doing a CCU to a base ship.

You can get the base Endeavor for $50 but it won't have any modules. So you're going to need to go for at least $125 total to upgrade to one with modules with it. It doesn't look like you can grab individual modules for it this time around either. The Hope version would be +$150 for you, and is likely to be a credit printing machine in the PU, but maybe a bit boring to play. It's expensive enough that you're not really going to be able to do the $0 CCU sidegrade token thing either. Well, you could for the base version if you have another of the $350 ships, don't think any of those are unlimited sales either though.

Remember, you'll be able to buy it all with in-game currency. Only put in more cash to back the game! :)

Thanks, i'll keep my Starfarer then.

I have a Starfarer, Freelancer, and Hull C
