All I have been asking here is one simple thing. Are there any matte monitors that I can use for reading if I have severe problems due to viewing matte screens?

Last time I used a matte screen from 5 years ago I experienced a lot of problems with my eyes, it was a samsung monitor and same thing happened when I used a Dell.

I saw sparkle, and floaters in my vision from starring at white background with black text. I was forced to invert colors just to read websites.

I then bought a HP 25" Glossy Monitor for the first time and all my eye problems went away, it was TN panel and was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen it was pure godly so clear. Later on I bought a Dell S2415H Glossy which I am giving to my mother because she needs a new monitor. The Dell which is an IPS I will admit isn't as flawles as my HP something about TN making the pixels look better this dell.

So I need to know what will happen if I take the chance to buy a matte? I will not be able to send it back because I live in the Caribbean. So I need to know if to go ahead and buy another S24 Glossy dell for myself.
I was considering buying Dell Ultrasharp or the Dell P2417H professional matte but I have no idea how those monitors even look. Or whats the difference with those and the ultrasharp.
Does Ultrasharp make viewing white pages easier on your eyes in the same way glossy does?

You're in a tough situation with being so sensitive to the type of monitor you need and being unable to return ones you don't like.
I would stay with the model that you know you like.

What happened to the HP monitor you liked so much?

Hi the HP gave out after 5 years. The CCFL got very dim and the monitor would randomly shut off, but boy was that monitor a beauty when it was new.

So I went ahead and bought the next best thing which was a Dell S2340L and it developed a line vertical across the entire screen 1 month later. I sold it for a loss and bought a S2415H another glossy dell on Amazon, within 3 days the top of the monitor came unglued just like that I had to toss some epoxy down the bezel to keep it in place.

Its been great for a year, my mother needs a monitor so I am giving her this one and will purchase another for me hopefully it will be smooth sailing.

I don't know how my eyes are so sensitive, it developed 10 years ago when I was looking at a CRT monitor one day I started seeing crazy flickering on every single crt. I switched to a matte LCD in 2006 and within 4 years I developed sensitivity to the matte grain, I could see all the flaws in the matte, I could see the coating I could see ever detail in the coating as if I somehow developed some kinda super power or something. It looked ugly and disgusting, I couldn't stand it and just like that I started noticing floaters in my vision from starring at the matte screen. Same with all matte.

I then switched to the 25" HP 2509m I think was the bezel a thick ugly fat bezel glossy monitor. But boy was the screen beautiful? every single problem I had ever had went away with just 1 look at that glossy monitor it was like being trapped behind a frozen foggy glasses with vaseline pasted on it and one day it was totally removed and I could see everything in the world with my naked eyes. That is my explanation of it.

The most brilliant poster I have seen here is a guy by the name of NCX he seems to be an expert in monitors I read his posts he too notices the sparkle in matte screens I think people like me and him are the few who can notice these things. But I am not sure if he is still alive though.

I suppose to be on the safe side I should go back with the S2415H gloss?

For the record my mother has a 24" Sony Bravia HDTV its a 4 year old TV that is 720p and has semi gloss. I hooked it up to my PC with Hdmi and my god is it disgusting, in 20 minutes my eyes started getting fatigue reading white pages. Who knows if it was because of its low resolution or what I enlarged the text huge and I placed it away from my eyes to not make resolution an issue and boy was it still horrible. The white background, it was terrible like it was tearing my eyes apart. I then switched back to my Dell and immediately my problems went away it was like my eyes started to heal rapidly.

There is just something special about gloss display for me, but I have never seen a Dell Ultrasharp or the Dell Professional matte displays before, but I read a couple posts people rated it bad because they said it caused sparkle and grain in their vision. I just don't know what exactly is a Dell Ultrasharp? is it mainly just color accuracy and rotating stand? or is it a very special LCD panel for reading without eye strain of other matte displays?

I want to mention something else, my eyes hurt less when there is subtle reflection on the screen. For example during the day when I open my windows and doors, and my own image starts reflecting off the gloss on my monitor, my eyes become relaxed, it feels smoother, cooler and calmer when there is slight reflection on the screen as opposed to a dark room with none.

Is there anything that causes this? is it a medical condition?

wanna know something even superior to this gloss screen for my eyes? my Nexus 4 phone. Glass and super high resolution is even better on my eyes. My phone is even more ultra perfect compared to this monitor.

I once used a retina display ipad and it too was perfect but I could easily tell it had pixelation, i could see the pixels very easy infact I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a smartphone but I cannot notice anything clearer above 1080p on a 5 inch screen.

Does this mean I have some kind of 20/20 vision or something? I don't wear glasses or anything.

So I found out where NCX is he is on another forum apparently.

I will attempt to make contact with him, he is the only person I can think off who might be able to assist me here. I am expecting him to recommend I go with gloss.

I've always been somewhat picky about image quality both on TVs and computer monitors.

Back in the day I bought an NEC 4FGe 15" CRT monitor for $700 because it was one of the best for image quality.
We had a couple of them where I worked at the time and I thought they were the best I'd ever seen.

Even so, it had slight geometric distortions and other issues that drove me bonkers. This was even though the overall
image quality was excellent for the time. It happened to have a very clear glass CRT too with no anti-glare coating.
I think that was one of it's noted features and it was called "Ultra Clear" or something like that. It had a flat/square tube
face and looked a lot like the glossy flat panels of today.

I agree that many anti-glare coatings look really bad and I can also see the shimmering effect or it looks like a dirty
window glass. Screens like that can easily cause eye strain.

I like glossy monitors, but I actually prefer a good quality matte finish.

You may want to get your eyes checked and make sure you don't need any kind of correction.

Other than that, obviously stay with glossy screens if it's that important to you.

For the record, I currently have a Dell U2415 Ultrasharp and I like it a lot. When I first got it I noticed small problems
like slight color problems in the upper corners. That was a well noted issue with this model and most of them had it
to a varying degree. I just had to stop looking for it and now I don't notice it any more. Doesn't bother me at all.
Most people would never notice it even if I mentioned it, it's not that obvious.

Anyway..... the point is that you can usually find fault in any product if you try hard enough.

Read up on the reviews and choose wisely.

Good luck!

Sparkle in matte - yes this is a valid concern. You can either buy glossy, or buy matte and remove the matte film like several of us here have been doing. Some matte coatings are more aggressive than others. Viewing angle can also have an effect. My BL3201PH has crazy sparkle if I look down at it (from standing), otherwise at normal seated height (or angling the panel upwards slightly) reduces the perceived sparkle.

Seeing floaters - not caused by glossy or matte LCD. Go see your optometrist. They can laser-beam the floaters and make them smaller and hopefully less noticeable. You'll notice it on anything bright white. Look at a white wall that is illuminated by bright sunlight, then scan your eyes around vertically and horizontally. You will notice floaters.

Less eye strain when there is reflection - you could be sensitive to PWM (pulse width modulation) flicker, seeing as you can see CRT flicker. CCFL have PWM flicker as well, it's just not as harsh as LED PWM due to the brightness decay not being as 'discrete'.

The Dell S2216M is glossy and cheap. The 2414h is a matte screen. Yes the new matte is better than old matte, but if you hate matte, it's still matte.
If you live where it's really hard to return a monitor I'd get something like the Dell i suggested that seems to fit your criteria, it's only $120, it is definitely glossy and it's Ips if that's what you want and if you end up not liking it at least it was only $120 and you could probably resell it easily, gift it, or keep it as a backup monitor.

just a question related to you john5220. Have you ever tried any of the glass eyewear that is supposed to help reduce eye strain? (personally i dont know if they work or anything, i've never done research into them). But I was curious if something like that might help allow you to use a wider range of monitor(s)?

maybe retina problems ? you should get your eyes checked buy professional...
if you see floaters in your field of view , your retina is falling apart and needs surgery

you drink a lot of caffeine ? , have high blood pressure ? diabetic ?
