Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

Yeah, I have to admit I am a little annoyed. I think they really need to focus more on SQ42 and less on selling ships for the PU. SQ42 should have been done at least a year ago.

I don't have much money into this game, that's why I'm not as annoyed as I could be. But I think they are dragging their feet and devoting too much time to PU ships at this point.
A year ago? Not really since they had the mocap stuff this year.

There actually has not been much focus on PU ships at all... concept sales don't affect overall game progress other than adding additional funding to it, and most of the ships that are ready are required for SQ42.

It might only appear that focus is on the ships for PU but that is only because thats the most marketed part because it makes money, not because its where all the work is going.

Focus has actually been put on SQ42 above all else in the project. its just more behind closed doors due to story spoilers they don't want out.

Personally i would of skipped SQ42 all together and put all the resources into the PU, But CR likes to tell stories and single player is better for that. Sq42 will likely be something played once and forgotten by most (not all).

I must admit that I'm more interested in SQ42 because I really like story driven games. I'll play it over and over again for sure. SC will be great but I need that story driven single player experience.

If its done right it can have some replay value, but i personally never put much faith in a single player experience. AI is usually too dumb and pulls me out of the challenge or they are just aim bots that are no fun. I like the unpredictable nature of human opponents so i will always favor a multiplayer online game.

And from a story perspective stuff ends up being too predictable or cliche and it feels like i've seen it all before.

The only way Sq42 will likely offer me any replay value will be if it comes out long before the PU is in a stable beta phase with no planned wipes, because once the PU is out ill feel like im wasting time playing SQ42 when i could be progressing in the PU.

Question,

a while ago they said something like, for every game package you get a free ai crewmember. Is that still a thing, or did i just imagine the whole thing.

I can't believe people are still buying ships for a game that has raised colse to 130 mill and is not out yet.

I don't know much about SQ42 in terms of the characters. I know they have Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman and some other recognizable actors. Is the character we play our own person or is Mark Hamill our character like in Wing Commander 3?

I enjoyed Freelancer single player quite a bit, but I admit once I had beaten that it was online only any time I played. I expect SQ42 to be better than Freelancer single player but the PU will have the longevity like almost any multiplayer component of a game.

The plan for extra character slots last I heard was to let you create their apprearance and names and use them for a few things. First as NPC crew that would level up (you still have to pay them, but likely at a discount vs. other NPCs) and your friends could "Agent Smith" into during missions. You can also decide to play as them, but when doing this they won't gain NPC experience. You can also use them to inherit your stuff if you die, see Death of a Spaceman. A bunch of this was gone over at the first PAX South presentation, not sure if there is good video of the whole thing. As far as I know this is still the plan.

You'll play yourself in S42. We know Mark Hamill is your CO for at least some of the game from the trailers. They filmed with an actor for the player but I don't think they are using his face or voice at all since you'll be able to choose your name, gender and appearance.

SQ42 was a huge selling point of the original campaign...actually listed above the PU in terms of features. That was what really sold me on it, I honestly don't care much about an MMO aspect.

Yeah its pretty much supposed to work like that, it allows you control over their looks and name, so you can make your ideal crew from a visual aspect rather than rely on randomly generated ones you hire.

I'm interested in SQ42, I hope its like Wing Commander IV, that was my fav of those. The problem with that type of game though is the story is so on rails that you don't have a lot of options. Tech should have changed things up so hopefully you can feel more like a driver to the story.

I am very interested in the PU, mostly because I love exploring things and seeing the wonders and being free to wander around, see the sights, fly some missions, die in battle and keep going.
I'll like SQ42 I'm sure, but I want to fly my ship in the stars and go exploring!

I am with you on this. Give me a good SP campaign and then let me settle into a PU where I can go explore.

Where my concern is that it looks like the PU is going to effectively require you to be in a guild of some sort and that there will be rampant greifing... None of which appeal to me. Especially with the cost of ships once you move off of the starters. That's the biggest reason I haven't invested in it yet, not sure I'll get my money back in a form of an enjoyable game experience.

We do already have an org, which is filled with people from here. You are welcome to join it once you get the game.

I think once you can lock your ship some of the griefing will calm down. Now those who show up and blow it up... I think I saw somewhere there will be mechanics in place to discourage this similar to disabling and hijacking ships non stop.

I hated Grim Hex for that once they put it in. Flew out there once to check it out. Was great but it took a few hours of play to get away from it over 2 days so I could spawn back at Olisar lol. People camping the exit to kill you, blowing up any spawning ship blah. Then my guns are bugged in Kareah so I couldn't defend myself trying to remove the wanted level lol. Although in the last few weeks there have not been a lot of complaints or problems in game about that. I think the people doing it had it done to them lol.

There will be some problem children like most MMO's but I don't see it being a massive issue overall. Especially with the scale of the game.

I dont think you'll need to play with large groups all of the time. To get to certain areas you may need to partner up with some folks. Or if you want to do larger things yeah. But I'm sure fleets will hire or reach out to privateers for support at times.

Hi i just heard about this game and bought the single player and mulitplayer of this game and have a couple of questions:

  1. If im not mistaken. the Single player campaign story mode i bought is not released yet but was meant to be released earlier this week?
  2. In MP mode, how do you team up and do coop missions together?
  3. why is my FPS bad in highest settings? i get max 25-28fps on a 980gtx sli with 6 core i7 processor clocked at around 4ghz with 32gb ram...
  4. Can you explore different planets yet and do coop missions there?

No the sp was not going to be released this past week. It won't be out for some time. They were just supposed to show off a bit of it, but it wasn't ready in time.

The easiest way to team up with people and the safest way would be to join a organization (guild) and play with them. the link to the org page is a few posts up.

As far as fps. The game is very taxing and the are still working on streamlining the performance. So if you are trying to run on max settings it's going to be rough right now.

Planets are currently not in the game yet they are slated for launch when all of the Stanton solar system opens up, which should be around the end of the year.

1. The single player campaign (which can also be played Co-Op with between 2-4 I think. Not sure on this?) is called Squadron 42 and yes, its not yet available. If you remember the old "Xwing / Tie Fighter" or more accurately in this case, "Wing Commander" (Chris Roberts, the same head developer and Chairman behind Star Citizen made Wing Commander!) games from back in the day, SQ42 will be a spiritual successor and major update to them. The timeline you're citing was unfortunately inaccurate. Cloud Imperium Games is excellent at communicating with the community, even when there are delays. SQ42 was planned for release this year, but as we know in gaming release dates often slip. However, in this case we'll be kept informed and are likely to get a better experience for it in the end. If you want to see progress being made, check out the videos and whatnot on the site that showcase development of both SQ42 and "Star Citizen" (aka the Public Universe, PU).

2. What do you mean? You can bring others onto your ship or join with them on theirs to work on missions, which are available throughout the Alpha at most of the "hub" locations. Note that as of yet there aren't some of the "ship ownership and control" metchanics like being able to lock your ship to only friends, Organization members etc... but those will arrive as the pre-alpha continues. I've not been able to play the latest build thanks to some hardware trouble, so if you're asking about a specific mechanic I'm sure someone else here can help you better

3. It is important to remember that this is a pre-alpha game in development. It is being designed to look great (based on a heavily modified CryEngine) and make use of high end PCs if you have them , though it will be playable and still look good on lower end hardware once the optimization is added.. I can't say specifically what might be causing your lower FPS. I wonder if SLI could be causing the issue perhaps? We all know that multi-card stuff can have issues with various drivers/games/profiles. What's your average FPS? Are those listed out in space just in general combat (ie Arena Commander against bots etc), or is it on foot in a densely populated area? Perhaps someone can give you advice on something to tone down but if you're forcing AA/AF from your drivers, probably you'd have a better experience without. Bring down some of the peripheral settings (ie AA/AF in game etc, leaving texture resolution etc) and see if it helps. Be aware of draw/view distance too. Just remember that for all of it, the game itself is in development and is unoptimized - this will change in time, but for the moment it may be best to bring down some settings for a smoother playable experience.

4. As of yet whole planets are not available, but they most certainly will be as the game develops. Watching the most recent Gamescom and CitizenCon footage will show some of the roadmap for this. The CitizenCon video showed a player flying from one planet atmosphere down to another and then engaging upon arrival. There will be tons of different kinds of places to explore and different ways to do it from an EVA of a derelict spacefaring vessel to stellar cartography and jump point mapping (ie finding new "warp" points into entirely new systems or new ways into old ones. Keep them to yourself, sell to the highest bidder? Potential for all kinds of gameplay here) , discovering new planets from one of the explorer type ships and launching probes to scan from orbit, then leading away-teams to the surface in your Ursa or Lynx rover! Of course, there is plenty more to do planetside besides the "exploration" side of the game!

Hope this helps asnd welcome to Star Citizen!

Performance issues are almost always caused by network code or servers, especially in PU. The game is surprisingly light considering how good it looks. On PU server my GTX 1070 is often in passive mode because of the network code bottleneck.

Yeah my GPU is barely chugging on low settings. I keep it low because I know that is the weak part of my system right now. Even then it's rare my low FPS (typically 28 to 32 solid) is due to my GPU right now. Cant wait to see some of the optimization stuff go in.

To the OP:
If you hit F11 in game you can add friends. Joining the same server is a bit funky from my understanding, none of my friends have bought in yet but someone I played with a few times tried it out with me in 2.3 or 2.4, cant remember which. He went to his hanger, invited me. Once we were in his hanger he went to the elevator and went into the PU. Once he loaded I followed suit. Not sure if that is the same now or if that was the only way at the time but it seemed to work out for him the times he did it with his friends.

If I had friends (who played <_< >_>) I would know better. I'm sure someone will have experience with it.

EDIT:
Once you have a friend if the server has space you can join their instance.

How many people are in one instance?

Ah sorry, once you have the F11 menu up push Right ALT (and) / to enable the in game mouse. Same to remove the mouse.
Right now I think its 40 players per instance, they have plans to put 1000 I think I heard in one of their latest video's or articles.

Has there been any thing said about the sota crossbow? Or did that fall off the face of the earth since they original pitched it?

Wasn't that the cross-kickstarter thing with Shroud of the Avatar? I hope it turns out cool, I wouldn't have backed SoA if not for the crossover.

Yes, it was Shroud of the Avatar. As of yet, I don't think its available in Star Citizen but it has registered certainly. Conversely, in SotA there is Vanduul Polearm (actually 2 of them, depending on your package phase/level of Founder vs Benefactor era) that will be awarded. The crossbow in SC will probably be added in the future when they bring more on-foot weaponry onboard. Just like some of the unique flight suits and weapons (ie there's a special pistol that was part of the early Weekend Warrior Super Hornet packs).

I think these cross promos are nice to see. I wonder if they'll do the same for Dual Universe or Chronicles of Elyria (the latter of which looks really, really promising and is a completely different kind of game from Star Citizen.).

Shroud of the Avatar is coming together nicely, especially for the roleplaying favoring players. Immersion is great. The only criticism I have is an overreliance on selling items for real money, some of which may be exclusive. Star Citizen did a very, very important thing in that, for alll their crowdfunding - there is very little that is exclusively cash only. From little trinkets to big ships, you don't have to have paid real cash to get the "good version" or the "version that looks a certain way". I've vehemently expressed my displeasure with this aspect of SotA and the game is still in early development so the potential to bring most of those currently exclusive housing styles and items etc... to the general player base is there. However, its up in the air in a way that it is not for SC and that's one of CIG's best decisions.

I think the last we heard on the crossbow was some art for it, can't remember when it was released though. I could have sworn this was well after the inital promotion.
Crossbow
I wouldn't expect anything in the game until 2.6 at least, likely later.

I'm somewhat ok with SotA selling unique looking items but don't like the functional items that seem to be only available for cash. Some of their sales have also rubbed me the wrong way since they let later backers get the same rewards for less cash than OG KS backers. I stopped giving them any more funding a while ago.

yeah unique looking items are always fine to sell, but not functionally unique items that could give an advantage or change the gameplay a little.

Ya I lost interest in sota a while ago due to those reasons.

For those of you who backed sota, does the crossbow show up in your hanger. Because I don't see it and am not sure if its linked to my account.

It varies from place to place some times its wildace, Wildace, WildAce, depends on how lazy i am when i type in the name at account creation lol.

I love the idea of the Loremaster, but that was not very smooth. Was this the first one?
