Big Progress in FAH Daily Production

Plan B sounds good !

So go figure this one out, It won't work in my haswell based Z87 board with latest BIOS and BIOS reset, It won't work in my Z9PA with a pair of Ivy based xeons in it but it is now working in my clapped out old 1366 based Z8NA from 2009, WTF???

Some Asus BIOS "magic" maybe ?

No idea, it crashed hard last night and would stay up for more than 2 minutes before crashing in a heap again. Just tried again in one of the newer boards and no go, i'm sending it back on Monday. I know the bios in the Z9PA can handle a pascal gpu, its had a 1070 version of the same card from the same manufacturer in it for the last few months without any issues:confused::mad:

F**K, the damn card is DOA, oh well whilst the RMA is underway plan B is cpu folding at 300k PPD

Well after issues with shipping the RMA, the replacement card is finally up and running, no idea what its boosting to but HFM is currently showing 924k PPD on a 11710, just a [pity the A7 WU dried up otherwise I could have started catching skillz

That sucks about the card Nathan_P. I'm still waiting for the 1080 Ti myself, but until then they 980 Tis have been rock solid in anything I install them to. Happy to hear it's up and running now. Those are some good numbers for a single card. It's about double a standard 980. I'm hoping the 1080 Ti has a similar doubling effect vs. the 980 Ti.

Skillz, I use LogMeIn, but being a paid version now sucks. I used to use an app called Proxy, and it was a one-time purchase. I'm not sure if it still works, or is still supported, but it was an efficient remote app, it just required port forwarding. It does remove the whole "having to log into a web site first" issue, and the control app was easy to use. I used to map one port per PC, keep the PC list on my laptop, and just take my laptop with me. It was as easy as starting the app, connecting to the computer by name, an voila. VNC and it's numerous variations are a solid alternative. Just be careful what your source is. I've had customers download versions of VNC that had a virus installed with them, or were configured to alert a hacker upon install with login credentials.

Still rocking my 980ti, it just sucks so much more power compared to the Pascal's. My 980ti and 970 used to pull 430-450w from the wall, now the 1070 & 1080 are pulling at most 430w and getting nearly double the PPD. If I can swing enough xmas gift money i'm going to get myself 1 more pascal and retire the 980ti to my daily rig, it'll make a nice upgrade from my 670

Is that total system power consumption? Either way doesn't seem bad for the performance compared to the 4P systems of old; Minsk (see sig) draws about 760-820W at load running WCG.

Yeah that's total system load, I need to update my sig as the pascals are in a Z87 WS and a xeon E31230L v3, the board, cpu etc only pull around 60w, total system at idle is only 118w and that includes 6 case fans. If you are not in a position to upgrade the 4p there is a new avx based cpu core coming out that aims to fix the lack of projects for multi cpu machines and hopefully fix the points gaps between cpu and gpu

Yeah I have two of the 980 Tis on my 4P. I had to put another PSU to run the two cards, but I found a neat device that turns it on and off based on the status of the primary PSU. In theory I could add at least 2 more cards, but I'd need a custom case that could handle them and I haven't gotten around to it. I can say that two 850 watt PSUs are cheaper than a 1500 watt of the same quality, and easier to resell, too.

All this talk of 4P systems and GFX cards, is there an [H]folding gallery these days?

Plz say yes

The second time this month my Internet has gone down. Luckily I was home to catch it only a few hours after it happened.

Really starting to piss me off.

Might get a second ISP for backup purposes.

Internet going down can seriously hurt production. Doesn't matter if it's my fiber gigabit or not. If it doesn't work it's pointless.

I think the local Cable Co offers a cheap Internet package. Gonna look into it. I got a router that should be able to use the Cable as a backup if the primary fiber line goes out.

Well crap. Away for work till the end of the week and one of my F@H boxen has crashed. Apparently it's shut down as I can't even remote into it to restart it. Hurting my production.

Well that is what you get for leaving them alone :D

Now get your butt back and fix it. ;)

That's pretty harsh. My boxen stopped talking to my network and was offline for a little while.

Haha!

If I didn't leave no one would be paying the bills!

I feel your pain, I've been on the road for work for 6 weeks now and probably for a couple more.. Checked my stats and see my ppd has been way down for awhile. I was able to VPN into my server and get F@H restarted but my main desktop is unreachable (no VPN - yet). Probably caused by a required Windows reboot but not much I can do about it until I get home. A planned GTX1070 upgrade should help make up a bit of the loss. Contemplating a new boxen as well ...

I think the PSU is dying. Sigh. Had someone restart it for me, but it died again this am. Got someone else restarting it tonight.

Anyone know if underclocking it will drain less power? Or how to get it to not run 100%? It's a 980 Ti running f@h.

Sure, less frequency or less voltage will pull less power from the PSU. But it'll run at 100% unless starved by something else like slow CPU or low PCI-E lanes. It could prob run at stock undervolted slightly. Maybe let the boost clock the card where it can with lower volts.

I need it to pull like 25% less power. I think it'll run fine then until I get home to swap out the PSU with a new one.

Well great. I think a power outage took out 75% of my boxen including my WCG box. They're not easy to turn on since non of them have power switches and a couple of them require interaction with the bios to finish booting and they're running headless.

Sigh

Well you can definitely see when I went on vacation but at least they did keep running. :)

I notice that someone has appeared on my threat list, I had just gotten used to the idea of it being empty. I suppose that's ChristianVirtual's way of telling me to sort out the 1080RMA that's been sitting on the spare desk for a month:)

Well it may not end up being spare, as posted in another thread this is the 2nd one of this model of card to go bad in 14 months so I may put the RMA replacement in my daily rig and sell my 980ti whilst its still worth something - these funds then become available for an extra card:D
Whether that's a1070 or 1080 or a 70/80Ti remains to be seen

Might I inquire as to what make and model this particular card is, you know...for research?
