Sprint and the Sprint Foundation will help change the lives of 1 million high school students by giving them opportunities to reach their full potential. The 1Million Project is a multiyear initiative to offer free mobile devices and free high-speed wireless internet connectivity to 1 million low-income, U.S. high school students lacking a reliable source of internet access at home. The expansive new program will help eliminate the “Homework Gap” that puts low-income students at a major disadvantage because they don’t have ready access to the internet needed for completing homework, communicating with teachers, or applying for jobs, scholarships or college.

"the internet is expensive" I see companies have 1-2 Meg lines for 10-15 a month..If they have high speed internet they will need a device PC.laptop, smart TV,gaming console and who pays for that?

Thats one way to get rid of your Samsung Galaxy Note 7 stock :p

Many schools no longer have computer labs, they have been loaning cheap devices to kids for the duration of their time in school. A lot of these devices are Chromebooks, which require an internet connection to do most work, yet the teachers don't take into account that many of their students might not have internet access at home. Yes, some companies have cheaper internet plans, but a lot of the poorer schools and families live in rural areas, where the only option is $100 - $300/month for satellite, or 4G.

This ungrateful land of the entitled people, how did anything ever get accomplished before the internet. God forbid people actually haft to go to the library to look anything up.
Oh I know the struggle is real but every one these days thinks we can't survive with out internet or that they are underprivileged with out it.

Honestly, Fuck off. That isn't a viable option for everyone and you know it. Not every single person receiving help is a lazy pos just looking to mooch the system.

EVERY single library I have been to in the last 10 years has had a bunch of computers with internet access available for people to use for free.

AND, even if these chromebooks or whatever must have internet access, there are tons of places with "free" Wifi.

Dolling out more entitlements to the "poor" IS NOT HELPING.

When you have kids saying they are looking forward to getting a check from the government like their mommy when they grow up, something is seriously wrong.

Thanks for your reply, bait taken. I agree that not every one on the system is a mooching sack of scat just 85% of them.
Giving them a free internet phone doe's nothing to help these people, give them a job so they learn self worth and have the means to get their own phone.
This is nothing more than a huge tax write off for a failing company.

God Bless

Quit sidestepping the issue. Not every single person has easy access to a library.

No, but every student does.
Find me a school district that doesn't have internet access.
Back in middle school we didn't have a computer. Dad was TDA elsewhere and he had the computer with him (P3 333MHz). I had stay after class at the school library or walk my ass to the public library to do my research for papers and typing.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

You assume every kid is within walking distance of home or doesn't have full time working parents who can come pick them up. these are really ignorant assumptions.

Both of my parents were full time workers. Dad was in the Navy, mom a nurse. We had no family around.
Simple fact - you don't need handouts to do well in life. Make good decisions and you'll do ok.
Even if a family is too poor to afford internet and device, that kid has a friend that he can stay the night with. I had to do this several times growing up.

This is just factually wrong and completely out of touch with today's society. Just touching on one of the many wrong things you stated here. You fail utterly to account for unexpected job loss in an area that doesn't have many job opportunities. Sorry you can't just Blanket statement everyone into your little pre-conceived notion of how things work. Some of you should seriously educate yourselves on the working poor as well as the absolute undeniable lack of opportunities in some areas. Right now frankly most of your arguments are just steeped in ignorance and quite frankly paint a pretty negative picture about you.

I know all about lack of opportunity. I spend most of my work hours in coal country. I've also been homeless, living in an 88 Camry while working part time for 7.25/hr.

Guys - you need to understand this is not about education or empowering, this is just bread and circuses for the masses in the guise of charity. Nothing more.
