i have a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium on a just completed home build. I'll be the only user. Windows is urging me to get protected. I've used free MIcrosoft Security Essentials for years but it only found one instance of malware (which it did defeat). I also have the full version of Malwarebytes which has worked for me (along with occasional help on the forums for those infected). But MSI's motherboard DVD is trying to sell me on 30 day trial Norton. Should I forgo the Norton and just use MWBAM and MSE?

definitely go for a combination of applications as there is not 1 solution that does it all well. The full version of Malwarebytes and I use the Panda Security free app. This has worked well for me.

bitdefender free works well.

if you are looking for a more full featured security product and can wait until thanksgiving, newegg usually has several to choose from for $5 a piece.

I've always used the free version of Avast and never had any issues.

Avast is severely bloated now and wants to monitor online everything you do.
I switched to Panda AV in the end.

For the Firewall, Comodo.
I use its HIPs which can be a pita when turned up (like UAC on steroids if you set it to paranoid), but its saved my arse a few times by letting me know what tries to run that I hadnt authorised.
Great for keeping your OS clean.

I use a separate sandbox for all online stuff called Sandboxie.
Comodo has a sandbox but I rather that my security apps are not in the same basket.

Thanks, thanksgiving is around the corner in the meantime I use Malwarebytes with MSE

Or go with Windows Security Essentials and malwarebytes, that works for me for the last 4-5years without any problems.
