ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 STRIX OC (Open Box) $578.98 @ NewEgg, Only One!

Already sold out. Original buyer probably couldn't get it to boost high enough for their expectations.

I snagged it after seeing the OP -- impulse buy, was moving toward a used/clearance 980 TI for low 300's to hold me over but whatever. I'll post back what I get on an OC to see if there's anything to what you guys said above.

Kind of strange, checked stock last night and it was back in stock so I pulled the trigger. If there's issues with the card does Newegg replace or refund? Never purchased openbox from them before.

I believe they carry the same warranty as new, and I'm sure as they come back from returns and are re-certified they go back on sale.

yeah.... re-certified by a newegg tech.... following which procedure? visual inspection of the sticker? check that it powers on?

I doubt newegg's policies for "re-certified" is very extensive.

If you buy used from newegg, you're getting the manufacturer warranty based on manufacture date, that's it.

Got the card, plugged it in and the rear most fan was making a slight clicking noise. You would have to test the card with the ASUS GPU Tweak II and switch off the "0db fan" mode to turn on the fans, or run something like a game that kicks the fan on. afterwords I discovered you could hear the clicking sound just by giving the fan a flick to make it spin.

Sounded a little bit like this, maybe not as bad.

I did pretty much what the guy in the video said he did, carefully unmounted the fan an remounted it (without removing the cooling shroud). I might have given the fan a slight squeeze applying pressure from both sides but didn't feel or notice anything popping back into place. I looked for clearance issues with the wires where maybe the fan blades were making contact with wires or something else but it didn't look like it was having that issue. When I remounted the fan and gave it a spin the sound went away.

Perhaps this was the original reason for sending the card back.

The card doesn't seem to have the extra "orphaned" thermal pads on the memory chips like the ones here

ASUS GTX 1080 Strix Gaming 8 GB Review

others have reported the pads missing from theirs as well, I don't know if that's reason to be concerned or not.

I haven't had time to run any stress test benchmark programs on it but playing a game for a couple of hours at stock speeds and it didn't break 62 degrees.

For anyone trying to get this deal keep checking. I managed to snag one just now. Also, if you want to use Masterpass you can get an additional $25 off the card using the code MPGAMER16 when you check out. Between that and my discounts for being a Premier member my total including Overnight shipping and Sat delivery came out to $577.62. It's not a huge upgrade from my 980ti but it's not that much less (on average) than what I'd get with a second card and I don't have to deal with the hassles of SLI. Or with buying a new motherboard since the PCI-E slot layout on this board is retarded.

My strix OC that I sold on the forums here recently was a shit clocker. If I put it in "OC" mode it was completely unstable. I had to live with it in "gamer" mode. Just FYI, don't expect much of an overclock.

I don't OC GPUs often anyway. At least on air coolers. Not OCing well does not seem to be all that uncommon with 1080s, at least some models.

I'm saying the card was advertised / spec'd to run at the speed and it would not. At least one other buyer on newegg had the same problem. I sold the card at a steep discount because of this. I'm not sure I could buy Asus video cards again any time soon, especially an open box card (that's probably why someone returned it).

Finally had time to play with the card a little. Everything is working good and the core boosts up to a sustained 2012MHz (2061 peak) in Valley just from setting the power and temp limits to the max in Precision. I have it running in the default Gaming mode because GPUTweakII sucks, but I'm happy with what it's showing so far. Using the Aggressive fan curve in Precision the card didn't even reach 59 degrees running Valley. It did hit 60-61 playing The Crew with all settings maxed out at 4k, forgot to make note of the core clock while playing that however.
